Modified pitch A (MPA) and modified pitch B (MPB) were prepared by oxidative polymerization and thermal polycondensation reaction with refined pitch as the raw material, respectively. The toluene soluble components (TS-1 and TS-2) were obtained by solvent extraction from MPA and MPB, separately. The Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose method were used to calculate the pyrolysis activation energy of TS. The Satava-Sestak method was used to investigate the pyrolysis kinetic parameters of TS. Moreover, the optical microstructure of the thermal conversion products (TS-1-P and TS-2-P) by calcination shows that TS-1-P has more contents of mosaic structure and lower contents of fine fiber structure than TS-2-P. The research result obtained by a combination of X-ray diffraction and the curve-fitting method revealed that the ratios of ordered carbon crystallite (Ig) in TS-1-P and TS-2-P were 0.3793 and 0.4417, respectively. The distributions of carbon crystallite on TS-1-P and TS-2-P were calculated by Raman spectrum and curve-fitting analysis. They show that the thermal conversion product of TS-2 has a better graphite crystallite structure than TS-1.
Purpose: To enhance the non-combustibility of fire protection piping insulation and improve the heat resistance of smoke extraction duct insulation, I plan to verify the suitability of AES insulation materials for these applications through performance testing. Method: The non-combustibility, heat resistance, and thermal insulation performance of AES insulation materials will be verified through various tests. Result: According to the 'Standards for Flame Retardancy and Fire Spread Prevention of Building Finishing Materials,' the results of non-combustibility and gas toxicity tests confirmed the non-combustible properties. The standard fire resistance tests verified the fire resistance performance. Additionally, the thermal insulation performance was confirmed through building insulation tests. Conclusion: As the performance tests on AES inorganic insulation materials have proven their noncombustibility, fire resistance, and thermal insulation performance, these materials are considered a viable alternative for improving fire spread prevention in buildings.

To investigate the matrix effect of sample for hydrogen analysis by inert gas fusion-thermal conductivity detection, calibration factor for the hydrogen analyser of the inert gas fusion-thermal conductivity detection method was measured with hydrogen standard materials in Ti, Zr-2.5Nb and by hydrogen gas dosing method. Also the hydrogen extraction efficiency for the different sample matrix, Ti and Zr-2.5Nb, was evaluated without adding tin flux. The calibration factor of the hydrogen analyser which was calibrated by hydrogen standard material in Zr-2.5Nb and Ti was 2~3% and 14% higher than that by hydrogen gas dosing method, respectively. Based on the results of calibration factor measurement, it could be concluded that the hydrogen extraction efficiency of the Ti matrix sample will be 12% lower than that of the Zr-2.5Nb. And according to the experimental results of hydrogen recovery test by no tin flux, the hydrogen recovery percentage of the Ti and Zr-2.5Nb matrix sample was about 70% but the recovery rate of Ti matrix sample was slightly lower than that of Zr-2.5Nb.
We have analyzed the effect of the substrate removal and packaging schemes on light output characteristics in InGaN/Sapphire LEDs. The removal of the sapphire substrate helps to dissipate the heat generated in the junction, but the advantage comes only with the detrimental effect of degrading the photon extraction efficiency. If the substrate-removed chip is attached to a metallic mount with good thermal conductivity, the maximum driving current is increased drastically, producing significantly increased light output and therefore compensating the photon extraction efficiency degradation. On a dielectric mount with a relatively poor thermal conductivity, however, it produces smaller light output, over most input current range, than the regular type of chips with the sapphire substrate remaining. Thus, for low power applications, the regular chips may be preferred over the substrate-removed chips, regardless of the chip mounts employed.
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the most important oceanic environmental factors in determining the change of marine environments and ecological activities. Satellite thermal infrared images can be effective for understanding the global trend of sea surface temperature due to large scale. However, their low spatial resolution caused some limitations in some areas where complicated and refined coastal shapes due to many islands are present as in the Korean Peninsula. The coastal ocean is also very important because human activities interact with the environmental change of coastal area and most aqua farming is distributed in the coastal ocean. Thus, low-cost airborne thermal infrared remote sensing with high resolution capability is considered for verifying its possibility to extract SST and to monitor the changes of coastal environment. In this study, an airborne thermal infrared system was implemented using a low-cost and ground-based thermal infrared camera (FLIR), and more than 8 airborne acquisitions were carried out in the western coast of the Korean Peninsula during the periods between May 23, 2012 and December 7, 2013. The acquired thermal infrared images were radiometrically calibrated using an atmospheric radiative transfer model with a support from a temperature-humidity sensor, and geometrically calibrated using GPS and IMU sensors. In particular, the airborne sea surface temperature acquired in June 25, 2013 was compared and verified with satellite SST as well as ship-borne thermal infrared and in-situ SST data. As a result, the airborne thermal infrared sensor extracted SST with an accuracy of $1^{\circ}C$.

Cavern Thermal Energy Storage system stores thermal energy in caverns to recover industrial waste heat or avoid the sporadic characteristics of renewable-energy resources, and its advantages include high injection-and-extraction powers and the flexibility in selecting a storage medium. In the present study, the structural stability of rock mass pillar between these silo-type storage caverns was assessed using a coupled thermal-mechanical model in $FLAC^{3D}$. The results of numerical simulations showed that thermal stresses due to long-term storage depended on pillar width and had significant effect on the pillar stability. A sensitivity analysis of main factors indicated that the influence on the pillar stability increased in the order cavern depth < pillar width < in situ condition. It was suggested that two identical caverns should be separated by at least one diameter of the cavern and small-diameter shaft neighboring the cavern should be separated by more than half of the cavern diameter. Meanwhile, when the line of centers of two caverns was parallel to the direction of maximum horizontal principal stress, the shielding effect of the caverns could minimize an adverse effect caused by a large horizontal stress.

The contribution of lipid to thermal flayer generation from glucose-protein reaction was accomplished by isolating flavor compounds from casein-glucose (CG)and casein-glucose-coin oil (CGL) which were stored for 2 and 4 weeks at 6$0^{\circ}C$ and then reacted at 16$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The volatiles from the reactant mixtures were isolated by a solvent extraction method with methylene chloride and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Pyrazine, methylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2-dimethylpyrazine ,2-ethy-5- methyIpyrazine and 2-acetylpyrrole originated from interaction of thermal degradation of casein and lipid oxidation were identified in the CGL samples. It was also found that 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-cyclopene-1,4-diode, heptanal, nonanal, and 2-heptanone were derived from lipid source. Two additional fatty acids, heptanoic acid and octanoic acid were also identified in the CGL samples. 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfural, the most abundant volatile, was responsible for the formation of sugar degradation product. The results suggested that the presence of lipid in the samples had more effect on the contribution of volatile formation of glucose-protein thermal reaction than the absence of lipid in the samples.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly used throughout the facility's life cycle for various applications, such as design, construction, facility management, and maintenance. For existing buildings, the geometry of as-built BIM is often constructed using dense, three dimensional (3D) point clouds data obtained with laser scanners. Traditionally, as-built BIM systems do not contain the material and textural information of the buildings' elements. This paper presents a semi-automatic method for generation of material and texture rich as-built BIM. The method captures and integrates material and textural information of building elements into as-built BIM using thermal infrared sensing (TIS). The proposed method uses TIS to capture thermal images of the interior walls of an existing building. These images are then processed to extract the interior walls using a segmentation algorithm. The digital numbers in the resulted images are then transformed into radiance values that represent the emitted thermal infrared radiation. Machine learning techniques are then applied to build a correlation between the radiance values and the material type in each image. The radiance values were used to extract textural information from the images. The extracted textural and material information are then robustly integrated into the as-built BIM providing the data needed for the assessment of building conditions in general including energy efficiency, among others.

Infrared (IR) imaging has been researched for various applications such as surveillance. IR radiation has the capability to detect thermal characteristics of objects under low-light conditions. However, automatic segmentation for finding the object of interest would be challenging since the IR detector often provides the low spatial and contrast resolution image without color and texture information. Another hindrance is that the image can be degraded by noise and clutters. This paper proposes multi-level segmentation for extracting regions of interest (ROIs) and objects of interest (OOIs) in the IR scene. Each level of the multi-level segmentation is composed of a k-means clustering algorithm, an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and a decision process. The k-means clustering initializes the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and the EM algorithm estimates those parameters iteratively. During the multi-level segmentation, the area extracted at one level becomes the input to the next level segmentation. Thus, the segmentation is consecutively performed narrowing the area to be processed. The foreground objects are individually extracted from the final ROI windows. In the experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using several IR images, in which human subjects are captured at a long distance. The average probability of error is shown to be lower than that obtained from other conventional methods such as Gonzalez, Otsu, k-means, and EM methods.

The effect of NaCl solution concentration (from 0 to 3 M) on the extraction of pectinesterase (PE) from jalapeno chili pepper (Capsicum annuum) was studied by determining its solubilization degree from the chili tissue. All concentrations of the salt favored the solubilization of PE in jalapeno chili pepper, compared to that in water. Maximum enzyme activity was obtained with NaCl 2.0 M. The effect of temperature on the PE activity of jalapeno chili pepper in the extracts was also studied. The PE residual activity of jalapeno pepper was 75% after 60 min of incubation at $55^{\circ}C$ and 10% at $75^{\circ}C$. At $85-95^{\circ}C$, PE residual activity was 5% after 5 min of incubation.
