Investigation of Characteristics of Incinerator Bottom Ash and Assessment for Recycle due to the Change of MSW Composition (생활폐기물 성상변화에 따른 소각시설 바닥재의 특성 변화와 시멘트 클링커 원료로 재활용 가능성 평가)

  • Recycling of bottom ash from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator has been strictly limited due to its composition of high level chlorine and other unfavorable substances. The composition of MSW has been, however, changed after the introduction of garbage-bag sales system, extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy and the prohibition of direct landfill of food waste. Recent waste shows reduced moisture and chlorine content, increased calorific value due to the separation of food waste, incombustible materials and PVC. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of composition changes of MSW incinerator bottom ash and to compare the analytical results with those before the separation system was introduced. CaO content of bottom ash, one of the major component of cement clinker, increased from 26.7% in 2001 to 34.0% in 2006. The chlorine content showed a dramatic decrease from 1.84% in 2001 to 0.00655% in 2006, which is closely compatible with that of the fly ash of coal-utilizing thermal power plants, which is mainly due to the changes of MSW composition. It is eventually considered that there is a possibility of utilizing the incinerator bottom ash as a raw material of cement clinker feed substances.

Effect of Garlic on the Digestion of Beef Protein during Storage (쇠고기에 첨가한 마늘의 소화효과)

  • Chopped garlic was added to beef to determine its effect on the protein digestion during storage and heat treatment. The digestibility of raw beef without garlic was not significantly changed during storage at $4^{\circ}C$, but increased as garlic added and aging time increased. The optimal aging time and amount of garlic added was varied with heating time. Trypsin inhibitor did not change the digestibility of beef due to its thermal inactivation. Gel chromatography revealed that the lower molecular weight peptides(2,200~6,150 dalton) were shown in beef-garlic mixture through aging and heating procedure. When aged beef with garlic was digested with four-enzyme system, the soluble portion was increased significantly in comparison with that from raw beef without garlic. Protein quality of beef, as measured by computed PER(C-PER), was improved from 2.14 of raw beef to 2.50 of aged beef with chopped garlic.

A Study on Exothermic Properties of TiO2/Epoxy Nanocomposites (TiO2/Epoxy 나노복합재의 발열 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, various nanoparticles have been used for filler in polymer matrices. The particles of nano size are whether high or not cross-link density in polymer affects the thermal and mechanical properties of one. The properties change as a result of chemical reactions between the nanoparticles and the surface of the polymer. There are two models for nanocomposites: "repulsive interaction" and "attractive interaction" between the nanoparticles and matrix. In this study, the variation in the curing mechanism was examined when nano-size $TiO_2$ was dispersed into an epoxy (Bisphenol A, YD-128) with different curing agents. The results of this study showed that the exothermic temperature and Tg in the case of the nanoparticles used (Jeffamine) (D-180) at room temperature were reduced by an increase in the $TiO_2$ contents because of the "repulsive interaction" between the nanoparticles and the matrix. The tensile strengths were increased by increasing amounts of $TiO_2$ until 3 wt% because of a dispersion strengthening effect caused by the nanoparticles, because of the repulsive interaction. However, such tensile properties decreased at 5 wt% of $TiO_2$, because the $TiO_2$ was agglomerated in the epoxy. In contrast, in the case of the nanoparticles that used NMA and BDMA, the exothermic temperature and Tg tended to rise with increasing amounts of $TiO_2$ as a result of the "attractive interaction." This was because the same amounts of $TiO_2$ were well dispersed in the epoxy. The tensile strength decreased with an increase in the $TiO_2$ contents. In the general attractive interaction model, however, the cross-link density was higher, and tensile strength tended to increase. Therefore, for the nanoparticles that used NMA, it was difficult to conclude that the result was caused by the "attractive model."

  • Ferritic stainless steels, which have relatively small thermal expansion coefficient and excellent corrosion resistance, are increasingly being used in vehicle manufacturing, in order to increase the lifetime of exhaust manifold parts. But, there are limits on use because of the problem related to cosmetic resistance, corrosions of condensation and high temperature salt etc. So, Aluminum-coated stainless steel instead of ferritic stainless steel are utilized in these parts due to the improved properties. In this investigation, Al-8wt% Si alloy coated 409L ferritic stainless steel was used as the base metal during Gas Tungsten Arc(GTA) welding. The effects of coated layer on the microstructure and hardness were investigated. Full penetration was obtained, when the welding current was higher than 90A and the welding speed was lower than 0.52m/min. Grain size was the largest in fusion zone and decreased from near HAZ to base metal. As welding speed increased, grain size of fusion zone decreased, and there was no big change in HAZ. Hardness had a peak value in the fusion zone and decreased from the bond line to the base metal. The highest hardness in the fusion zone resulted from the fine re-precipitation of the coarse TiN and Ti(C, N) existed in the base metal during melting and solidification process and the presence of fine $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ formed by the migration of the elements, Al and Si, from the melted coating layer into the fusion zone.

Influence of Thermal Treatments on Germination and Internal Compositions of 'Hongro' and 'Fuji' Apple Trees during Endodormancy (내재휴면기 온도처리가 사과 '홍로' 와 '후지'의 발아와 내부물질 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we investigated the limit temperature range which is effective for dormancy release of 'Hongro' and 'Fuji' apples during the endodormancy period. The germination rate was 50% or more in all treatments except of 'Hongro' $-5^{\circ}C$ treatment. The germination rate of 'Fuji' was 86.3% at the temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of carbohydrate and mineral components were significantly different between treatments but did not show any tendency or specific change. However, the sorbitol contents of 'Hongro' $-5^{\circ}C$ treatment were higher at 29.62 mg/g than those of 'Fuji', which was not affected for dormancy release. The results of hormone analysis showed that ABA(abscisic acid) and JA(jasmonic acid) in 'Hongro' $-5^{\circ}C$ treatment were respectively 176.48 and 15.72 ng/g. ABA, JA and SA(salicylic acid) contents in 'Fuji' apple tree were significantly lower than those of 'Hongro'. As a result of this study, the limit temperature range effective for dormancy release was different according to the varieties, and 'Hongro' did not affect with 30.3% of germination rate at $-5^{\circ}C$. However, 'Fuji' is 86.3% even at $-5^{\circ}C$ it was suggested that 'Fuji' had a chilling accumulation for dormancy release.

Magnetoresistance Properties of Spin Valves Using MoN Underlayer (MoN 하지층을 이용한 스핀밸브의 자기저항 특성)

  • In this paper, magnetic properties and annealing behavior of spin valve structures using Mo(MoN) layers as underlayers were studied varying the thickness of the underlayers. The spin valve structure was consisted of Si substrate/$SiO_2(2,000{\AA})/Mo(MoN)(t{\AA})/NiFe(21\;{\AA})/CoFe(28\;{\AA})/Cu(22\;{\AA})/CoFe(18\;{\AA})/IrMn(65\;{\AA})/Ta(25\;{\AA})$. Also, MoN films were deposited on Si substrates and their thermal annealing behavior was analyzed. The resistivity of the MoN film increased as the $N_2$ gas flow rate was increased. After annealing at $600^{\circ}C$, XRD results did not show peaks of silicides. XPS results indicated MoN film deposited with 5 sccm of $N_2$ gas flow rate was more stable than the film deposited with 1 sccm of $N_2$ gas flow rate. The variations of MR ratio and magnetic exchange coupling fold were small for the spin valve structures using Mo(MoN) underlayers up to thickness of45 ${\AA}$. MR ratio of spin valves using MoN underlayers deposited with various $N_2$ gas flow rate was about 7.0% at RT and increased to about 7.5% after annealing at $220^{\circ}C$. Upon annealing at $300^{\circ}C$, the MR ratio decreased to about 3.5%. Variation of $N_2$ gas flow rate up to 5 sccm did not change the MR ratio and $H_{ex}$ appreciably.

A Simplified Closed Static Chamber Method for Measuring Methane Flux in Paddy Soils (논토양(土壤)의 메탄 배출(排出) 측정(測定)을 위한 간역폐쇄정태(簡易閉鎖靜態) Chamber법(法))

  • Various factors such as sampling height in the chamber, sampling interval, sampling time at daytime and the effects of pedoturbation on methane emission during chamber installation were evaluated using a simplified closed static chamber method to measure methane flux in paddy soils. Sampling height of the chamber for representative samples was 65cm. An additional DC fan was required to attain an even methane gradient in the chamber. Considering the change of methane concentration and air temperature in the chamber, sampling is recommended to finish within 30 minutes after starting sampling. The aim of setting DC fan in the chamber was to get the thermal equilibrium in the chamber as well as the representative samples. Suitable time to collect the gas samples representing the day's methane flux was 0900~1200 hours. Gas sampling was possible even after installation of small chambers if the elapsed time was more than 6 hours and supporting stand would be to be added to minimize pedoturbation.

Effects of Shield Materials on the Growth and Yield Characteristics of Melon Grown inside a Plastic Greenhouse in Summer Season (고온기 멜론 시설재배 시 자재별 차광 효과)

  • This Experiment was conducted to determine the effects of light shield materials when melon grown inside a plastic greenhouse in summer season. The average temperatures were 36.6℃, 34.5℃ and 34.0℃ respectively for the control(non-shield), coating agent, and the white net. The light transmittances were 69% and 75%, respectively inside the greenhouse treated with the coating agent and white net immediately after applicants, compared with that inside the control greenhouse. At the 40 and 80 days after treatment, the light transmittances for the coating agent were 92% and 98%, respectively, indicating it was slowly decomposed and removed, but there was no change in the transmittance for the white net. While the leaf number did not differ among the treatments, the plant height was higher in the white net and shading agent than in control. The weight of the leaves, fresh-weight and dry-weight were no different from that of shading, but it became heavier in the later stages. The marketable fruit yield was increased by 6% for white nets and 5% for the coating agent compared to control, there was no statistical significance. Therefore, coating agent is considered as an effective method to lower temperature during high temperature period, but it is preferable to use it in consideration of cultivation period, because the coating agent is gradually removed.

  • When the landfill gas generated at the landfill site is released into the atmosphere, methane gas with a high global warming potential is emitted, which adversely affects climate change. When methane contained in landfill gas is used as fuel for internal combustion engines and burned to generate electricity, it is emitted into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide, which can contribute to lowering the global warming potential. Therefore, in order to use the landfill gas as fuel for power generation using an internal combustion engine, it is important to increase the thermal efficiency of the engine. Thus, it is necessary to use a fuel supply system in which gas is injected using an electronically controlled injector at an intake port for each cylinder rather than a fuel supply technology using the conventional mixer technology. In order to use the electronically controlled gas injection method, it is important to accurately measure the mass flow rate according to the conditions of using landfill gas. For this, a study was conducted to measure the injection amount and calculate them in order for the intake port gas injection of landfill gas.

Quality Characteristics of Backsulgi with Dextrinized Rice (호정화에 의한 백설기의 품질특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dextrinization methods (dry oven and roaster) and the ratio of dextrinized rice on the quality of Backsulgi during storage. The moisture content significantly increased with increasing the amount of dextrinized rice regardless of dextrinization methods. As the ratio of dextrinized rice increased, the L value of the Backsulgi decreased, but the a and b values increased. The a and b values of dry oven method were higher than those of roaster method due to their thermal denaturalization. However, there were no significant pattern's change in sample's colors during storage. In the texture profiles, the hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness significantly decreased with increasing the amount of dextrinized rice depending on the dextrinization methods and the ratios. The time constant (1/k) of the Backsulgi with dextrinized rice comparatively higher than that of control and appeared to be the highest in the Backsulgi formulated by 100% of dextrinized rice. In the sensory evaluation, Backsulgi with dextrinized rice over 30% after 1day storage showed higher value in overall quality and lower value in hardness than control. The addition of 30% dextrinized rice made by roaster showed the most effective on the quality and retrogradation of Backsulgi.
