This study investigated the influences of reciprocal peer tutoring strategy and field independencedependence in the instruction enhancing student questions by using weekly reports. Seventh graders (N=152) from a middle school were assigned to WR (weekly reports) and WR-RPT (weekly reports-reciprocal peer tutoring) groups. Students were taught about ‘three states of matter', ‘motion of molecules', and ‘change of states and thermal energy for eighteen class hours and wrote weekly reports six times for the period. The students in the WR-RPT group also conducted reciprocal peer tutoring with the questions of weekly reports which they wrote. The results revealed that the scores of the WR-RPT group were significantly higher than those of the WR group in a conception test regardless of students' field independence-dependence. The field dependent students in the WR-RPT group performed better in an achievement test than those in WR group, while there was no significant difference for the field independent stu dents between the two groups. Additionally, field independent students in each group scored significantly higher than field dependent students in the two tests. Many students, especially having more field independence in the WR-RPT group, perceived WR-RPT positively.
Waste lubricating oil(WLO)s have been recycled as energy source through direct fuel in cement kilns and fossil power plants, or as fuel oils, or re-refined lubricating base oils. In our country, they have been recycled as low grade fuel oil through chemical treatment process. In 2003, extended producer responsibility (EPR) system was adopted from deposit system on sale of lubricating oils in order to promote their recycleing rate. However, our recycling rate of WLOs have been stagnant(below 70%) for last 5 years. And there has been no research work on recycling of WLOs as re-refined base oil until now in this country. Stabilization technology of thermally cracked oils to reduce tar and malodor and to improve their color for production of high grade fuel oil, and a novel process production of high grade re-refined lubricating base oil from WLOs have been developed and commercialized recently in Canada and U.S.A., respectively. Several countries like Australia, Italy, Germany and U.S.A., etc. are encouraging recycling companies to recycle WLOs as re-refined lubricating oil by giving greater subsidies or benefits compared to other recycling methods. They also adopt a policy to purchase re-refined lubricating oil preferentially in the federal or local governments and to recommend consumers to purchase it willingly. Based on the facts that several advanced countries have adopted a policy to recycle WLOs as re-refined base oil for saving of petroleum resource and reduction of environmental pollution, it is right time to be considered that our present policy for recycling of WLOs should be reevaluated and the new policy of their environmental-friendly and sustainable recycling should be established.
CoSiB is the amorphous ferromagnetic material and multilayer consisting of CoSiB and Pd has perpendicular magnetic anisotropic property. PMA has strong advantages for STT-MRAM. Moreover, amorphous materials have two advantages more than crystalline materials: no grain boundary and good thermal stability. Therefore, we studied the magnetic properties of multilayers consisting of the $Co_{75}Si_{15}B_{10}$ with PMA. In this study, we investigated the magnetic property of the [CoSiB (3, 4, 5, and 6) ${\AA}$/Pd(11, 13, 15, 17, 19,and $24{\AA})]_5$ multilayers and found the annealing temperature dependence of the magnetic property. The annealing temperature range is from room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$. The coercivity and the saturation magnetization of the CoSiB/Pd multilayer system have a close association with the annealing temperature. Moreover, the coercivity especially shows a sudden increasing at the specific annealing temperature.
Energy security is a topic of high importance to many countries throughout the world. Countries with access to vast energy supplies enjoy all of the economic and political benefits that come with controlling a highly sought after commodity. Given the desire to diversify away from fossil fuels due to rising environmental and economic concerns, there are limited technology options available for baseload electricity generation. Further complicating this issue is the desire for energy sources to be sustainable and globally scalable in addition to being economic and environmentally benign. Nuclear energy in its current form meets many but not all of these attributes. In order to address these limitations, TerraPower, LLC has developed the Traveling Wave Reactor (TWR) which is a near-term deployable and truly sustainable energy solution that is globally scalable for the indefinite future. The fast neutron spectrum allows up to a ~30-fold gain in fuel utilization efficiency when compared to conventional light water reactors utilizing enriched fuel. When compared to other fast reactors, TWRs represent the lowest cost alternative to enjoy the energy security benefits of an advanced nuclear fuel cycle without the associated proliferation concerns of chemical reprocessing. On a country level, this represents a significant savings in the energy generation infrastructure for several reasons 1) no reprocessing plants need to be built, 2) a reduced number of enrichment plants need to be built, 3) reduced waste production results in a lower repository capacity requirement and reduced waste transportation costs and 4) less uranium ore needs to be mined or purchased since natural or depleted uranium can be used directly as fuel. With advanced technological development and added cost, TWRs are also capable of reusing both their own used fuel and used fuel from LWRs, thereby eliminating the need for enrichment in the longer term and reducing the overall societal waste burden. This paper describes the origins and current status of the TWR development program at TerraPower, LLC. Some of the areas covered include the key TWR design challenges and brief descriptions of TWR-Prototype (TWR-P) reactor. Selected information on the TWR-P core designs are also provided in the areas of neutronic, thermal hydraulic and fuel performance. The TWR-P plant design is also described in such areas as; system design descriptions, mechanical design, and safety performance.

In this study, we conducted a physiochemical property analysis using commercial faba bean flour (CFBF), faba bean flour (FBF), and faba bean starch (FBS). We observed that the FBS granules were elliptical and cracked on the surface. Moreover, FBS showed significantly lower solubility and apparent viscosity than FBF and CFBF. With respect to the pasting properties, FBS exhibited a peak viscosity of 1349.3 cP at 94.8℃ and a breakdown of 42.7 cP, whereas FBF and CFBF displayed no pasting properties. The FBS gelatinization enthalpy (12.9 J/g) was relatively high compared with the values obtained for FBF and CFBF (5.9 and 4.6 J/g, respectively). The FBS X-ray diffraction patterns showed a C-type pattern with peaks at diffraction angle (2θ) of 5.9°, 15.2°, 17.3°, and 23.1°, which were the same in FBF and CFBF with relatively low peak intensity. These results represent basic data for using faba bean as a food material.
An in situ regeneration of activated carbon bed using an ozonated water was studied in order for avoiding the carbon loss, contaminant emission and time consuming for discharge-regeneration-repacking in a conventional thermal regeneration process. Using phenol and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as adsorbates, the adsorption breakthrough and in situ regeneration with the ozonated water were repeated. These organics were supposed to degrade by the oxidation reaction of ozone, regenerating the bed for reuse. As the number of regeneration increased, the adsorption capacity for phenol was reduced, but the change was stabilized showing no further reduction after reaching a certain degree of decrement. The reduction of adsorption capacity was due to the increase of pore size resulting in the decrease of specific surface area during ozonation. The adsorption capacity of phenol decreased after the ozonated regeneration because the in-pore adsorption was prevalent for small molecules like phenol. However, PEG did not show such decrease and the adsorption capacity was constantly maintained after several cycles of the ozonated regeneration probably because the external surface adsorption was the major mechanism for large molecules like PEG. Since the reduction in the pore size and specific surface area for small molecules were proportional to the duration of contact time with the ozonated water, careful considerations of the solute size to be removed and controlling the contact time were necessary to enhance the performance of the ozonated in situ regeneration of activated carbon bed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how to modify the physical properties of cellulose after thermal treatment. Cellulose was treated between $225^{\circ}C$ and $325^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs under air flow, and then the thermally treated cellulose was measured to specific surface area, constitute elements, consumption ofacid and base, as well as the adsorption capacity of ethylamine vapor. The higher was the treating temperature from $225^{\circ}C$ to $325^{\circ}C$, the lower was the total yield of cellulose. Elemental analysis revealed that carbon content in thermally treated cellulose was gradually increased in proportion to temperature increment. The amount of acidic functional groups tended to increase up to $300^{\circ}C$, after then to be lowered slightly. In principle, no alkaline functional groups were found in thermally treated cellulose. In case of treatment with $325^{\circ}C$, only a few amount of alkaline functional groups were detectable. Specific surface area of thermally treated cellulose are determined to $1.9m^2/g$, which value can become higher when the treated temperature rises. The thermally treated cellulose at $275^{\circ}C$ shows the highest adsorption capacity of ethylamine at $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. Solubility of those two celluloses with WPG (Weight Percent Gain) value of 113% and 108%, respectively, was determined to almost 100%. X-ray diffractogram of thermally treated cellulose suggested that the crystalline structure of cellulose began to be destroyed at the temperature of $275^{\circ}C$. As a conclusion, changes of such a physical properties make it possible to weaken inter and/or intra hydrogen bond in crystal region of cellulose macromolecules. When thermally treated cellulose adsorbs ethylamine, it turns to be well soluble to water.

Carbon based materials have many attractive properties such as a wide band gap, a low electron affinity, and a high chemical and mechanical stability. Therefore, researches on the carbon-based materials as field emitters have been drawn extensively to enhance the field emission properties. Especially, diamond gives high current density, high current stability high thermal conductivity durable for high temperature operation, and low field emission behaviors, Among these properties understanding the origin of low field emission is a key factor for the application of diamond to a filed emitter and the verification of the emission site and its distribution of diamond is helpful to clarify the origin of low field emission from diamond There have been many investigations on the origin of low field emission behavior of diamond crystal or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond films that is intentionally doped or not. However, the origin of the low field emission behavior and the consequent field emission mechanism is still not converged and those may be different between diamond crystal and CVD diamond films as well as the diamond that is doped or not. In addition, there have been no systematic studies on the dependence of nondiamond carbon on the spatial distribution of emission sites and its uniformity. Thus, clarifying a possible mechanism for the low field emission covering the diamond with various properties might be indeed a difficult work. On the other hand, it is believed that electron emission mechanisms of diamond are closely related to the emission sites and its distributions. In this context, it will be helpful to compare the spatial distribution of emission sites and field emission properties of the diamond films prepared by systematic variations of structural property. In this study, we have focused on an understanding of the field emission variations of structural property. In this study, we have focused on an understanding of the field emission mechanism for the CVD grown undoped polycrystalline diamond films with significantly different structural properties. The structural properties of the films were systematically modified by varying the CH4/H2 ratio and/or applying positive substrate bias examined. It was confirmed from the present study that the field emission characteristics are strongly dependent on the nondiamond carbon contents of the undoped polycrystalline diamond films, and a possible field emission mechanism for the undoped polycrystalline diamond films is suggested.
Agar has widely been used as medical aids and food ingredients due to its pecular physicochemical and rheological properties. In this paper, the effects of spray drying and extrusion drying on functional properties of agar were investigated to clarify the sol-gel transition mechanism at low temperature and microstructure of agar gel by measuring phase transition by differential scanning calorimetery, structural differences by light microscope and scanning electron microscope observation. The lowest endothermic onset(To), peak(Tp), conclusion(Tc) temperature and enthalpy($\Delta$H) using differential scanning calorimetery were showed in extrusion-dried agar wic were checked in 41.30, 61.72, 80.50 and 0.73cal/g. In cases of unmodified and spray-dried, the values were 81.20, 95.51, 112.14 and 3.22cal/g, and 60.11, 76.45, 89.54 and 1.53cal/g, respectively. When all samples were reheated using differential scanning calorimetery after gelling fully, no significant differences of endothermic To, Tp, Tc and $\Delta$H appeared. The surface structure of unmodified agar powder observed by light microscope and scanning electron microscope appeared a continuous surface without any indication of small pores, gaps or point of discontinuity. In cases of spray-dried agar, the unstable structures with pores was resulted. The microstructures of extrusion-dried agar, however, was solid with large gaps and areas of discontinuity in the surface. From the results above, it was suggested that significant differences in phase transition and surface microstructures were clearly related to the physicochemical changes and rheological properties, solubility and gelling ability of the types of agar gel.

We report the discovery of a bright mid-infrared (MIR) source with prominent crystalline silicate emission using the space telescope AKARI and Spitzer. This source, IRAS 15099-5856, has a spectacular morphology with a bright central compact source (CCS) surrounded by knots, spurs, and several extended (~4') arc-like filaments. The source is seen only in infrared at ${\geq}10{\mu}m$. The Spitzer MIR spectrum of the CCS shows prominent emission features from Mg-rich crystalline silicates and strong [Ne II] 12.88 ${\mu}m$ and several other faint ionic lines. We model the MIR spectrum as thermal emission from several independent dust components and compare their properties to those of the Herbig Be star HD 100546 which shows very similar MIR spectrum. Our molecular line observations reveal two molecular clouds around the source, but no associated dense molecular cores. We discuss two possible origins for IRAS 15099-5856; a deeply embedded massive young stellar object on the other side of the Galaxy and a disrupted, protoplanetary disk being photoevaporated by the UV radiation from the nearby O star Muzzio 10.
