  • The theoretical modeling of transition energy and absorption coefficient for intersubband transitions in quantum wells in presented. We include, as well as hartree and exchange-correlation potentials, boht depolarization effect and exciton-like effect which play great roles in heavily doped cases where practically reasonable absorption coefficients are available. Also, the calculated results are compared with the existing experimental values for .delta.-doped Si quantum wells to check the validity of our theoretical calculation.

보의 회전 및 진동제어를 위한 동적 모델 타당성 연구 (A Study on the Valid Dynamic Modeling for the Slewing and Vibration Suppression Control of Beam)

  • This research is concerned with the validation of the modeling technique and controller design for slewing beam structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. Comparisons with the theoretical model are made based upon the frequency responses and time responses. A new factor called the coupling coefficient is introduced to incorporate the discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. The slewing is achieved by applying the PID control, which is found to be less sensitive to vibrations. The vibrations are controlled by PPF controller, which is found to be effective in suppressing residual vibrations after slewing. The vibrations occurred during slewing is difficult to control because the piezoceramic actuator is not powerful enough to overcome inertial loadings.

  • The purpose of Superconducting Magnetic Bearing Flywheel Energy Storage System (SMB-FESS) is to store unused nighttime electricity until it is needed during daytime. An analytical model of the SMB-FESS is necessary to identify the system behavior. At first, we have to model the superconducting magnetic bearing. Modeling the SMB is same as estimating the bearing parameter. The theoretical modal parameter is calculated through the equation of motion and the experimental modal parameter is estimated through the impact testing (modal testing). The bearing parameter is searched by using the non-linear least square method until the theoretical result corresponds to the experimental result. The suggested modeling method is verified by comparing experimental and analytical frequency response function.

  • In this paper, a 3-DOF(Degree Of Freedom) rigid body model is developed for dynamic analysis of a hydrostatic table. The dynamic coefficients, stiffness and damping constant of each pad are calculated from the mass flow continuity condition. The validity of this model is examined in theoretical and experimental method. The dynamic behavior when mass unbalances and local variations of stiffness and damping of pads present is analyzed for real applications of hydrostatic table. Since the theoretical and experimental results show goof agreement. it can be said that the 3-DOF rigid body model is useful for the dynamic model of the table. The analysis reveals that the pitching motion is the dominant mode of vibration, It also reveals that unbalanced loads can increase amplitude of tilting motion and reduce natural frequencies and damping capacity of the hydrostatic table.

  • Low pressure radio-frequency glow discharges are investigated using theoretical modeling and various experimental diagnostic methods. In the calculations, global models and transformer models are developed to understand the chemical kinetics as well as the electrical properties such as the effective collision frequency, the heating mechanism and the power transferred to the plasma electrons. In addition, Boltzmann equation solver is used to compensate the effect of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) shape in the global model, and the general expression of energy balance for non-Maxwellian electrons is developed. In the experiments, a number of traditional plasma diagnostic methods are used to compare with calculated results such as Langmuir probe, optical emission spectroscopy (OES), optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF). These theoretical and experimental methods are applied to understand several interesting phenomena in low pressure ICP discharges. The chemical and physical properties of low pressure ICP discharges are described and the applications of these methods are discussed.

Three Reasons We May Shun the Research Practice That Employs Formative Measurement in the Endogenous Position

  • When the formative construct is placed in the endogenous position, there are clear theoretical, mathematical, and empirical issues in model estimation. Nonetheless, scholars who have adopted structural equation modeling for empirical research and those who are engaged in debates on the viability of formative modeling fail to recognize the fundamental problems of employing formative measurement in the endogenous position. This manuscript is intended to set a corrective path by discussing three reasons why this frequented practice may be avoided in both theoretical and empirical research.

It is found from experiments that the theoretical model lacks the frictional effect. The frictional effect is incorporated into the equations of motion by employing the coupling factor.   • A concept of hierarchical modeling, the newest modeling technology. has been introduced early In 1990. This nu technology has a goat potential to advance the capabilities of current computational mechanics. A first step to Implement this concept is to construct hierarchical models, a family of mathematical models which are sequentially connected by a key parameter of the problem under consideration and have different levels in modeling accuracy, and to investigate characteristics In their numerical simulation aspects. Among representative model problems to explore this concept are elastic structures such as beam-, arch-. plate- and shell-like structures because the mechanical behavior through the thickness can be approximated with sequential accuracy by varying the order of thickness polynomials in the displacement or stress fields. But, in the numerical analysis of hierarchical models, two kinds of errors prevail: the modeling error and the numerical approximation errors. To ensure numerical simulation quality, an accurate estimation of these two errors Is definitely essential. Here, a local a posteriori error estimator for elastic structures with thin domain such as plate- and shell-like structures Is derived using element residuals and flux balancing technique. This method guarantees upper bounds for the global error, and also provides accurate local error Indicators for two types of errors, in the energy norm. Comparing to the classical error estimators using flux averaging technique, this shows considerably reliable and accurate effectivity indices. To illustrate the theoretical results and to verify the validity of the proposed error estimator, representative numerical examples are provided.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling, active vibration controller design and experiments for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The equations of motion were then reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The sensor equations were also converted to a reduced form. An aluminum shell was fabricated to demonstrate the effectiveness of modeling and control techniques. The boundary conditions at both ends of the shell were assumed to be shear diaphragm. Theoretical natural frequencies were calculated and compared to experimental result. It was observed that the theoretical result is in good agreement with experimental result for the first two modes. The multi-input and multi-output positive position feedback controller, which can cope with first two modes, was then designed based on the blockinverse theory and implemented using DSP. It was found from experiment that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.
