  • Two experiments were conducted to examine psychological reality and incremental nature of thematic processing in Korean sentence comprehension. By using two different types of verbs (i.e., transitive and causative verbs), we manipulated necessity of the thematic reanalysis (i.e., consistent vs. inconsistent condition) in the coordinated sentence structures. In Experiment 1, there was no significant difference in the reading times of the verbs between the consistent and the inconsistent condition. However, there was significant differences in question answering times between the two conditions. In Experiment 2 in which we changed a noun phrase of the test sentences into inanimate one, we found significant thematic reanalysis effects in the reading times of the final verbs. Based on these results we discussed the theoretical importance and universality of the thematic processes.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe healing effects of the forest on alcoholics through a forest experience program. Methods: The qualitative data was gathered from one focus group discussion with 6 alcoholics and individual interviews with 8 alcoholics. They had all participated in a "healing forest" program. All interviews were recorded and transcribed according to thematic content analysis processes. Results: The four main themes on the attributes of forest were "a lively living being", "placidity and tranquility", "acceptive atmosphere", and "beautifulness as it is" which revealed the participants' perceived nature of the forest which was attributed to the healing effects. Eight other themes on participants' positive changes included "revived senses", "aspired to live", "relieved and relaxed from being tense", "gaining insight on self", "having an acceptive attitude", "becoming compliant with his/her life", "learning that life is being together" and "recognizing the value of one's existence". Conclusion: The findings of the study illustrated the participants' self-healing processes through interactions with the nature of the forest. Nursing interventions utilizing healing atmospheres such as "healing forest" programs can be considered helpful in providing a venue to alcoholics to reflect on their lives affirmatively.

  • In both Korea and the U.S., science education leaders and specialists insist that there is a shortage of curricula to address the new national science education guidelines in support of reform. This paper addresses development of new curricula for science education reform in the hopes of facilitating further development of guideline-based curricula. We examine Korean and U.S. thematic-based (Korean Science Field Trip at Cultural Sites Program and U.S. Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education) and project-centered (Korean Teachers for Exciting Science and U.S. Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching Program) programs. Using the criteria of rationale for curriculum, content and scope, processes of implementation, and assessment strategies, we identify the curricular components that are common across four successful secondary science programs and determine which of these components address the national guidelines. Our findings indicate that common components of these four programs meet the expectations of the science guidelines being used to revamp science education in both countries. Therefore, these programs not only engage secondary students and teachers in practicing successful science education, but also lead to successful science education practices that can be incorporated in the future development of curriculum to support secondary science reform.

  • High resolution aerial photographs and digital elevation models for Bangpo beach using UAV were generated in this study to analyze the thematic and geometric characteristics of coastal features. Based on 728 aerial images acquired on September 10, 2016 by the UAV, a image mosaic at 2.2 cm spatial resolution and a digital elevation model at 4.4 cm spatial resolution were developed. This study found out that Bangpo beach consisted of intertidal zone and supratidal zone. The intertidal zone can be subdivided into lower part and upper part with distinctive geomorphological characteristics. While the lower part included sand bars and ripple marks along the coastline, the cusps and sand dunes were the major coastal features of the upper part. Part of the intertidal zone was occupied by shore platform with average slope of 0.9 degree containing various sizes of gravels. The supratidal zone slanted toward ocean with berms on the surface with an interval of 15 m. These coastal features indicated the flow intensity towards to the land and tidal effect. It validated that the UAV application in coastal research was very effective analyzing to examine coastal processes.

  • This paper shows a theoretical-reflective analysis on the importance of vocational training and value education to transition into models that are inclusive in cultural diversity, typical of the globalized and hyperconnected environment of modern societies. Interculturality is contextualized as a key element in linking teaching-learning processes with the uniqueness and problems associated with cultural ethnocentrism and alterity. In this sense, the work is part of a thematic review that contributes to the understanding, inclusion and recognition of cultural, racial and ethnic diversity in the different formal spaces of learning. As summary, value education and transversality are the basis for building educational interculturality in future generations.

  • Sustainability is a broad concept involving economic, social and environmental issues in operational and managerial processes. To assist ports to implant sustainability practices into their operations, this paper conceptualizes the structure of sustainability practice in port operations, based on interviews undertaken at Busan port in early 2013. Results revealed that, as a strategic practice to improve their internal business processes, sustainability practices necessitate the simultaneous pursuit of container traffic growth, low environmental impacts and corporate responsible image making, operational efficiency, efficiency of the use of the port area and sustainable growth. Through thematic analysis, the relevant practices were clustered into four sub-dimensions incorporating environmental technologies, continual monitoring and upgrading, internal process improvement, and cooperation and communication. Further, reporting the relevant issues such as barriers and challenges in carrying out sustainability practices, the findings provide useful insights for strategic agenda to assist ports to incorporate sustainability practices in their operations.

  • Natural and artificial land features are very dynamic, changing somewhat repidly in our lifetime. It is important that such changes are inventoried accurately so that the physical and human processes at work can be more fully understood. Change detection is a technique used to determine the change between two or more time periods of a particular object of study. Change detection is an important process in monitoring and managing natural resources and urban development because it provides quantitative analysis of the spatial distribution in the population of interest. The purpose of this research is to detect environmental changes surrounding an area of Mountain Moscow, Idaho using Landsat Thematic Maper (TM) images of (July 8, 1990 and July 20, 1991). For accurate classification, the Image enhancement process was performed for improving the image quality of each image. A SPOT image (Aug. 14, 1992) was used for image merging in this research. Supervised classification was performed using the maximum likelihood method. Accuracy assessments were done for each classification. Two images were compared on a pixel-by-pixel basis using the post-classification comparison method that is used for detecting the changes of the study area in this research. The 'from-to' change class information can be detected by post classification comparison using this method and we could find which class change to another.
