  • The plate waves propagating in thin plates have dispersive nature showing the dependence of velocities on the frequency. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function can be used to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves propagating in the plate. Plate waves in the aluminum plate of 3 mm thickness were identified and generated by pencil lead breaks and the lowest order symmetric ($S_o$) and antisymmetric ($A_o$) modes were analyzed by the WT method. The measured group velocities agreed very well with theoretical predictions in the frequency range of 50-400 kHz. The pencil breaks were also used to simulate acoustic emission sources in the plate, and the source location algorithm using the wavelet transform of dispersive plate waves was found to give accurate results.

  • Since the introduction of the mandatory energy efficiency design index (EEDI), several studies have been conducted on the maneuverability of waves owing to the decrease in engine power. However, most studies have used the mean wave force during a single cycle to evaluate maneuverability and investigated the turning performance. In this study, we calculated the external force in accordance with the angle of incidence of the wave width and wavelengths encountered by KVLCC2 (KRISO very large crude-oil carrier) operating at low speeds in regular waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We compare the model test results with those published in other papers. Based on the external force calculated using CFD, an external force that varies according to the phase of the wave that meets the hull was derived, and based on the derived external force and MMG control simulation, a maneuvering simulation model was constructed. Using this method, a weather vaning simulation was performed in regular waves to evaluate the course-keeping ability of KVLCC2 in waves. The results confirmed that there was a difference in the operating trajectory according to the wavelength and phase of the waves encountered.

  • To design a coastal structure in the nearshore region, engineers must have means to estimate wave climate. Waves, approaching the surf zone from offshore, experience changes caused by combined effects of bathymetric variations, interference of man-made structure, and nonlinear interactions among wave trains. This paper has attempted to find out the effects of two of the more subtle phenomena involving nonlinear shallow water waves, amplitude dispersion and secondary wave generation. Boussinesq-type equations can be used to model the nonlinear transformation of surface waves in shallow water due to effect of shoaling, refraction, diffraction, and reflection. In this paper, generalized Boussinesq equations under the complex bottom condition is derived using the depth averaged velocity with the series expansion of the velocity potential as a product of powers of the depth of flow. A time stepping finite difference method is used to solve the derived equation. Numerical results are compared to hydraulic model results. The result with the non-linear dispersive wave equation can describe an interesting transformation a sinusoidal wave to one with a cnoidal aspect of a rapid degradation into modulated high frequency waves and transient secondary waves in an intermediate region. The amplitude dispersion of the primary wave crest results in a convex wave front after passing through the shoal and the secondary waves generated by the shoal diffracted in a radial manner into surrounding waters.

  • Equatorial noise, also known magnetosonic waves (MSWs), are one of the frequently observed plasma waves in Earth's inner magnetosphere. Observations have shown that wave amplitudes maximize at the magnetic equator with a narrow extent in their latitudinal distribution. It has been understood that waves are generated from an equatorial source region and confined within a few degrees magnetic latitude. The present study investigates whether the MSW instability and saturation amplitudes maximize at the equator, given an energetic proton ring-like distribution derived from an observed wave event, and using linear instability analysis and particle-in-cell simulations with the plasma conditions at different latitudes along the dipole magnetic field line. The results show that waves initially grow fastest (i.e., with the largest growth rate) at high latitude (20°-25°), but consistent with observations, their saturation amplitudes maximize within ±10° latitude. On the other hand, the slope of the saturation amplitudes versus latitude revealed in the present study is not as steep as what the previous statistical observation results suggest. This may be indicative of some other factors not considered in the present analyses at play, such as background magnetic field and plasma inhomogeneities and the propagation effect.

  • This study presents the NDE (non-destructive evaluation) technique for detecting the loosened bolts on joint steel structures on the basis of TOF (time of flight) and amplitudes of Lamb waves. Probabilistic neural network (PNN) technique which is an effective tool for pattern classification problem was applied to the damage estimation using PZT induced Lamb waves. Two kinds of damages were introduced by dominant damages (DD) which mean loosened bolts within the Lamb waves beam width and minor damages (MD) which mean loosened bolts out of the Lamb waves beam width. They were investigated for the establishment of the optimal decision boundaries which divide each damage class's region including the intact class. In this study, the applicability of the probabilistic neural networks was identified through the test results for the damage cases within and out of wave beam path. It has been found that the present methods are very efficient and reasonable in predicting the loosened bolts on the joint steel structures probabilistically.

  • A non-contact, in-situ and non-invasive technique for health monitoring of submerged fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates has been developed using ultrasonic guided waves. A pair of mobile transducers at specific angles of incidence to the submerged FRP specimen was used to excite Lamb wave modes. Lamb wave modes were used for comprehensive inspection of various types of manufacturing defects like air gaps and missing epoxy, introduced during manufacturing of FRP using Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM). Further service induced damages like notches and surface defects were also studied and evaluated using guided waves. Quantitative evaluation of transmitted ultrasonic signal in defect ridden FRPs $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ healthy signal has been used to relate the extent of damage in FRPs. The developed technique has the potential to develop into a quick, real time health monitoring tool for judging the service worthiness of FRPs.

  • It is well known that when a high-speed planing craft travels in following seas it experiences long-periodic motions due to low encounter frequency, and it often loses its course keeping stability. Therefore, it is necessary to study the sea-keeping performance and stability of it in the following seas. In this paper, the vertical motions of a planing craft were measured in following regular waves, and the test results were compared with the theoretical results. In the case of the same encounter frequency, non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes become larger as Froude number is higher, and non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes in head waves are larger than those in following waves. The mean values of the motions in following waves are similar to the running attitudes of a craft in calm water at the same Froude number.

  • This paper predicts the speed-power-rpm relationship in regular head waves using various indirect methods: load variation, direct powering, resistance and thrust identity, torque and revolution, thrust and revolution, and Taylor expansion methods. The subject ship is KVLCC2. The wave conditions are the regular head waves of λ/LPP = 0.6 and 1.0 with three wave steepness ratios at three ship speeds of 13.5, 14.5 and 15.5 knots (design speed). In the case of λ/LPP = 0.6 at design speed, two more wave steepness ratios have been taken into consideration. The indirect methods have been evaluated through comparing the speed-power-rpm relationships with those obtained from the resistance and self-propulsion tests in calm water and in waves. The load variation method has been applied to predict propulsive performances in waves, and to derive overload factors (ITTC, 2018). The overload factors have been applied to obtain propulsive efficiency and propeller revolution. The thrust and revolution method (ITTC, 2014) has been modified.

  • Researches using time reversal acoustics(TRA) for impact localization have been paid attention to recently. Dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves, which restrict the utility of classical nondestructive evaluation based on time-of-flight information, can be compensated through the application of TRA to Lamb waves on a plate. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate using finite element analysis. In particular, the virtual sensor effect caused by multiple wave reflections at the boundaries of a plate is shown to enable the spatial focusing of Lamb waves though a very small number of surface-bonded piezoelectric(PZT) sensors are available. The time window size of forward response signals, are normalized with respect to the number of virtual active sensors. Then their effects on the spatial focusing performance of Lamb waves are investigated.
