  • This study aims to understand the overall experiences of students who use notebook computers in class by using a qualitative approach. Interview data were collected from 23 Korean college students at a Korean university, who use notebook computers in their classes; the data were analyzed through the constant comparison method. The results from this study can be categorized into two themes: the positive and negative effects of using a notebook computer in class, and different perspectives on the effects of using a notebook computer in class. The positive effects of notebook computer usage were specified as production of lecture notes, performing searches for information, management of learning materials, and effective time management. However, behaviors such as perusing other works not associated with the class were indicated as negative effects. The participants had different perceptions about the effect of notebook computer usage in increasing academic performance, although they were satisfied in their experience with notebook computers in general. These results imply that appropriate methods of technology usage are needed and that the support of an instructor is essential to achieve fully beneficial use of notebook computers in class.

  • e-revolution makes a lot of changes in the methodology all over the world. That is, the theory of real time showing helps people to access audio and visual wherever and whenever they are. In the pst computers were considered as only tools which could make us work easily. However, the meaning of computer is changing with e-revolution nowadays. Computers are not just computers as they were; they have done a lot of things which we thought impossible and they will do in the future as well. This new wave encourages people who are teaching the design to use computers whatever they do. For example, instead of using pencil and a drafting board, most people in the design field work with monitors, mouse and plotter. Therefore, most people who are in the design field need to have the ability of computer skills. They have to use computers not only in their class but also in their office. However, if we use computers for visual presenting in the class, it will not be enough to catch the e-revolution. That is, we should work with computers in the creative and conceptual design such as the using of the design information and the applying digital techniques in the early stage of the work. The purpose of this study is to show how to work with computers in the spacial design process especially th using of the DIS(Design Information System) and the applying digital techniques in the early stage of the work.

  • This study aims to investigate gender differences in the use of ICT by the students of urban schools. The objectives of the study are to find out the use of computers and Internet by the students and also the problems encountered by them while using computers and Internet. The study found that there is a significant association between the place (p=.005) and frequency (p=.002) of use of computers and gender. It is also found that there are significant differences in the problems faced by students while using computers (p=.002), use of Internet (p=.004), and the gender. This clearly indicates that there exists a gender disparity in the use of ICT by the male and female students in the urban schools. In order to overcome this disparity, the school authority should provide the basic and necessary ICT infrastructure in schools which can be equally used by male and female students.

  • The invention of computers is one of the best things that have ever happened to mankind and undergraduate students can benefit immensely from the use of computers. However, observations have showed that in the present Nigerian society, there are a number of issues arising from unethical use of computers. Interactions with some undergraduate students revealed that a majority have fallen into the trap of unethical use of computers at one time or another. This seemingly alarming rate of unethical use of computers therefore calls for concern. A literature search has shown that awareness and perception of computer ethics have not been adequately researched within the Nigerian context. Thus, the main objective of this study was to examine the awareness and perception of computer ethics by undergraduate students in a Nigerian university. Descriptive survey research method was used and the study population was comprised of 12,894 undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The multistage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 292 and the questionnaire was used to collect data. Findings showed that the level of awareness of respondents on issues associated with computer ethics was high (mean=45.19). A majority of the respondents had a favorable perception of computer ethics and the most prominent factor identified that could hinder adherence to computer ethics as noted by most of the respondents was the poor economic situation of the country. Part of the recommendations was that government at all levels should provide responsible and responsive leadership.

  • This paper proposes a system to synchronize the time of computers over an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network. With the proposed system, the UAVs can perform missions that require precise relative time. Also, data collected by UAVs can be fused precisely with synchronized time. In the system, to synchronize the time of all computers over the UAV network, two-step synchronization is performed. In the first step, the mission computers of the UAVs are synchronized through the server of the system. After the first step, the mission computers measure time offset between the time of the mission computers and the flight computers. The offset values are delivered to the server. In the second step, virtual time is determined by the server from the collected time offset. The measured offset is compensated by moving the synchronized time of mission computers to the reasonable virtual time. Since only the time of mission computers are controlled, any flight computers that use micro air vehicle link (MAVLink) protocol can be synchronized in the proposed system.

  • A comparison of students' media environments and media use patterns among Korean-Chinese in Yanji and Shenyang, Chinese students in Yanji and Korean students in Ulsan revealed significant differences. The research surveyed 3,241 students between 10-18 years old on their home media environments, media use patterns and social characteristics including achievement motivation and the locus of control. Korean children not only have more media in their homes, but they are also heavier users of computers and other media than the other two groups. Despite the lower rates of access to computers and other media at home, Korean-Chinese in Yanji reported more use of media including TV, VCRs and computers at the computer rooms than Chinese students in Yanji. Additional analyses revealed negative correlations between computer gaming at home and at computer rooms and achievement, internal locus of control and psychological and physical home environments. Impacts of Korea culture and societal changes on the Korean-Chinese use of media, and choice of media language were discussed.

  • Although computers cannot analyze textual data in the same way as they analyze numerical data. they can nevertheless be of great assistance to qualitative researchers. Thus, the use of computers in analyzing qualitative data has increased since the 1980s. The purpose of this article was to explore advantages and disadvanteges of using computers to analyze textual data and to suggest strategies to prevent problems of using computers. In additon, it illustrated characteristics and functions of softwares designed to analyze qualitative data to help researchers choose the program wisely. It also demonstrated precise functions and procedures of the NUDIST program which was designed to develop a conceptual framework or grounded theory from unstructured data. Major advantage of using computers in qualitative research is the management of huge amount of unstructured data. By managing overloaded data, researcher can keep track of the emerging ideas, arguments and theoretical concepts and can organize these tasks mope efficiently than the traditional method of 'cut-and-paste' technique. Additional advantages are the abilities to increase trustworthiness of research, transparency of research process, and intuitional creativity of the researcher, and to facilitate team and secondary research. On the other hand, disvantages of using computers were identified as worries that the machine could conquer the human understanding and as probability of these problems. it suggested strategies such as 1) deep understanding of orthodoxy in analytical process. To overcome philosophical and theoretical background of qualitative research method, 2) deep understanding of the data as a whole before using software, 3) use of software after familiarity with it, 4) continuous evaluation of software and feedback from them, and 5) continuous awareness of the limitation of the machine, that is computer, in the interpretive analysis.
