The primary objective of this study was to classify different family values and to examine how university students' perceptions of childbirth differ according to the types of family values. The sample for this study consisted of 601 university students living in the cities of Seoul, Incheon, and the Gyeonggi province. The data were collected using structured questionnaires distributed through an online survey. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation and cluster analysis, One-Way ANOVA and $X^2$ test are applied to analyze the data. The major results of this study are as follows: 1. The values of the university students regarding marriage, children, and familism were used as parameters to categorize the different types of family values on the cluster analysis. The results of the cluster analysis showed that the university students' family values could be classified into three types; "family-centered values", "individual-centered values", and "familism children-centered value". 2. The family values of the university students differed according to each student's gender, age, religion, socioeconomic status, gender-role attitude, and relationships with his or her father and or mother. 3. On average, the number of children that the students would like to have in the future is higher than the number of children that they actually plan to have. 4. The students' perceptions of family planning and low birthrate circumstances differed according to their family values. The university students categorized as having "family-centered values" planned to have the highest number of children in the future and thought that the low birthrate was a very serious issue, whereas the students with "individual-centered values" planned to have the lowest the number of children in the future. 5. To conclude the study, recommendations were made for the government to improve the low birthrate and for facilitate further research regarding this issue.
This study identified and compared family values within and across different generations concerning gender roles, attitudes toward diverse families, children, and parental roles. Data were obtained from the 2020 Seoul Family Report Survey. There were 1,949 study subjects, including first- and second-generation baby boomers and individuals in generations X, Y, and Z in Korea. Latent profile analyses were conducted using M-plus. Perceptions and views concerning family values were classified into different types. The main findings were as follows. Two types were identified among first baby boomers, and three were identified among second baby boomers. Most of the first and second baby boomers belonged to the "moderate" type. Two types were detected among those in Generation X. Regarding gender roles, most views of Generation X were slightly progressive, while their other family values were more moderate. Three types were identified among those in Generation Y: "progressive," "moderate," and "very liberal." Generation Z was identified as a "progressive" group. This study provides basic data to explore the direction of the coexistence of generations by identifying and comparing diverse family values within and across generations.
As the present Korean family has been exposed to many social changes, the family types and family values of Korean family also have been changed substantially. This study was carried out to find the desirable type and family values of future Korean family. Equality between men and women, equality among family members, and bilateral kinship relations were suggested as desirable values of the Korean family. Variety in family type, including various married couple centered on family and various extened family, was suggested as future Korean family type.
The purpose of this study was to determine what factors influence various non-marriage types by considering reasons why adults are not married. The roles of individual characters and family values affecting each type of non-marriage were carefully considered. From the data of 'the Survey on the National Fertility, Family Health and Welfare in Korea in 2015', 1,053 unmarried adults who were in their late 20s to middle 40s were selected. Results show that non-marriage types among unmarried adults were diverse. Depending on sex, the distribution of non-marriage types differed. While economic reasons were predominant among men, lack of opportunities for marriage was the main reason for most women who were not married. Findings also suggest that factors such as socio-demographic characters and family values were differentially associated with each non-marriage type. These findings indicate a great deal of diversity in needs, lifestyle, and life satisfaction among unmarried young adults. This suggests that an increase in the population of unmarried adults can be related to prospectively various marriage behaviors and family patterns in our society in the future, and consequently life patterns will be different among the adult generation.
The purpose of this study was to conduct Latent Profile Analysis to identify the types of marriage values within each generation and explore the influence of gender, family health, and self-determination on each type. This study was conducted as an online survey through social networking sites (SNS) for the Second Generation of Baby Boomers (1965~1974), Generation X (1975~1984), Generation Y (1985~1996), and Generation Z (1997~2003). A total of 1,114 copies were used for the final analysis. Latent Profile Analysis was conducted using Mplus ver. 8.8 software to identify the types of marriage values within each generation and explore the influence of gender, family health, and self-determination on each type. The significance of this study lies in the identification of a group in each generation that holds ambivalent values about marriage. Additionally, we identified differences between gender and self-determination as variables that affect marriage values, excluding family variables. Therefore, it is significant to understand marriage values by considering generational characteristics. Based on this, it is believed that it can provide a basis for education and counseling programs related to marriage, reflecting the important variables unique to each generation.
The purposes of this study were to classify types of consumption values and to examine 5 types of art appreciation of university students in Seoul. Five types of art appreciation included fine art exhibition(including photographs, architects, calligraphy works), classical and opera performance, traditional Korean music performance, drama and musical performance, dance performance. The sample for this study consisted of 422 university students of five universities in Seoul. The data were collected using the structured questionnaires. The statistical methods used for the analysis were descriptive statistics, chi-square, factor analysis, and cluster analysis. The major findings are as follows. 1. The result of factors for consumption values of students emerged four factors. These were called as 'materialism', 'honor centered', 'family centered', 'hedonism' value. 2. The cluster analysis was conducted based on these four factors. The result showed 3 groups of consumption value which were called as 'material' honor value group', 'family value group', 'hedonic value group'. 3. The consumption value of university students did not significantly differ according to their demographic variables. 4. The behavior of art appreciation of university students significantly differed by their demographic characteristics and consumption value. The material' honor valued group showed the least chances to make decisions on art appreciation for one's own, which reflected that this group appreciate art to satisfy their honors rather than to enjoy art itself. They also showed the most chances to consider the renownedness of the art work or artists among three groups. And they showed the least chances to pay for the tickets for art appreciation, all of those meant that they appreciate arts unvoluntarily in situational condition. The family valued group showed the most chances to pay for the tickets when they appreciate arts. And therefore they were most susceptible for the prices. The hedonic valued group showed the most interests in art. They decided to appreciate art for their own, and they considered the contents and the highness in the level of the art the most when they appreciate art. And they show the most intention of participation in drama/musical performances, which reflect their interests in hedonic values. Based on these results of this study concluded that the consumption values of university students affected their behavior of art appreciation. Thus, university students' behavior on art appreciation can be effectively developed by education according to their consumption values.
This study was to examine whether the hedonic and utilitarian shopping values were expressed in shopping experience among the undergraduates and how the consumers with different shopping values vary in the perception of credit cards' benefit and risk. The 215 undergraduates in Seoul were surveyed. The results indicated that undergraduates were divided into hedonic shoppers and utilitarian shoppers according to their shopping value and that the perception of credit cards' benefit and risk was explained by the four factors including the increased cost, the removing the immediate need for money, the additional service and benefits, and the overspending and credit crime. The overspending and credit crime as one of the risk factors was affected by the types of shopping values.

The purpose of this study were to understand the types of preferences to housewives' employment of husbands and wives, and to explore the differences in the personal, the family, and the job-related variables regarding such types of preferences. For this study, the employed housewives with children aged under 10 year were surveyed. The results of this study were as follow; 1) Types of perferences to housewives' employment of husbands were smaller compared to wives'. This may mean that husbands' traditional values related to child rearing and education, and housework influenced on their preferences to wives' employment. 2) There were significant differences in the types of preferences to housewives' employment regarding the types of wives' occupation. Wives working in the white color jobs were prefered themselves' employment more than wives working in the blue color jobs. 3) The group that both wives and husbands prefere housewives' employment was more positively perceived the effects of women's employment on both wives themselves and their children. Also such couples were satisfied more than and felt family-job strain less than other groups.
Traditional familism and family value is known as the value that most Koreans share with. Strong family solidarity and family-centered perception among Koreans influences other social values and ideology. Under the family value, caring for family members is family responsibility instead of government responsibility. Previous studies argued that the family value played a role to impede the development of family policy in Korea. The aim of this study was to explore a relation between the family value and the needs for care-support family policy. This study investigated how the family value were related to the specific needs for care-support family policy. The data were drawn from the Seoul Families Survey conducted on 2006 by Seoul Women and Family Foundation. The survey data consisted of 2,500 married males and females living in Seoul. The statistical techniques used for analysis were frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA, crosstabs, multiple regression models, and multinomial logit models. The major findings of this study were as followings. First, while the traditional familism appeared to be held at a certain level, the general attitudes towards cohabitation, divorce, and single-parent family seemed to be less traditional. Second, the familism was found to be partly associated with the needs for the care-support family policy. The respondents who had less traditional value on arriage and child-rearing showed the higher level of needs for daycare center. This finding implied that nontraditional attitudes were related to the needs for an alternative care service such as caring through facilities rather than to the needs for supportive or complementary services. Lastly, the respondents who had higher level of traditional familism showed a higher preference for direct economic service (supportive service) than for other types of service in child care. And the less traditional their attitudes towards marriage and child-rearing, the more likely they are to prefer flexible child care services and programs to other types of child care services. These results implied that the family value was partly influential to family policy. However, it is worthy to note that the family value was related to family policy preference rather than to family policy needs. In other words, traditional family value appeared to influence the types of family policy rather than the level of needs for family policy.
