  • This paper presents a stable nonlinear adaptive control for AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) by using neural network. AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear, and their hydrodynamic coefficients vary with different operational conditions. In this paper, the nonlinear uncertainties of the AUV's dynamics are approximated by using LPNN(Linearly parameterized Neural Network). The presented controller is consist of three parallel terms; linear feedback control, sliding mode control, and adaptive control(LPNN). Lyapunov theory is used to guarantee the stability of tracking errors and neural network´s weights errors. Numerical simulations for nonlinear control of the AUV show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

  • In this paper, we developed a Manta-type AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and analyzed its control performance as well as its dynamic characteristics underwater. The nonlinear motion of equations, which are expressed in terms of hydrodynamic coefficients obtained by various experiments, are used to simulate the motion of a Manta AUV underwater. We applied the sliding-mode theory to control the heading angle and depth of the vehicle, and confirmed the effectiveness of the control algorithm through simulations and sea-trials.

  • In this paper, an optimal PID sliding mode controller is proposed for the position control of electro-hydrostatic actuator(ERA) systems with system uncertainties and saturation in the motor. An ERA prototype is developed and system modeling and parameter identification are executed. Then, optimal PID and optimal anti-windup PID controller are designed based on identified system model by using optimization toolbox in MA TLAB/Simulink and the performance of the two control systems are compared by experiment. It was found that the optimal anti-windup PID control system has better performance than the optimal anti-windup PID control system.

  • This paper proposes a high performance position controller for a driving system using a time optimal controller which has been widely used to control driving systems to achieve desired reference position or velocity in a minimum response time. The main purpose of this research lies in an improvement of transient response performance rather than that of steady-state response in comparison with other control strategies. In order to refine the scheme of time optimal control, Lyapunov stability proofs are incorporated in a controller of standard second order system model. This scheme is applied to the control of a driving system. In view of the simulation and experiment results, the standard second order system model exhibits better minimum-time control performance and robustness than double integral system model does.

  • In position control system using variable structure control, the velocity of control object is controlled to approach the desired specified velocity patterns, and eventually the position of control object is correctly at reference position. Here, this intention can be success by means of variable structure control. In this paper, the PI velocity feedback control is also used sliding mode controller. The design of position controller under specified velocity profiles in variable structure control's constraints is studied.

  • A robust nonlinear speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) is presented. A perturbed dynamic model including the influence of parameter variations and speed measurement error on the nonlinear speed control of a PMSM is derived. Based on this model, a boundary layer integral sliding mode controller to improve the robustness and performance of the nonlinear speed control of a PMSM is proposed and compared with the conventional controller.

  • This paper proposes an active damping control method for a grid-side converter that has an LCL grid filter in the back-to-back converter. To remove the resonant frequency components produced by the LCL filter, it is necessary to measure the grid current. To do this, sensors must be added. However, it is not necessary to add sensors because the grid current is estimated by designing a suboptimal observer. In order to remove the nonlinearity and to gain fast response of control, both feedback linearization and sliding mode control are applied. The proposed method is verified through a simulation.

  • This paper presents force-feedback control performance of a haptic device in virtual environment of minimally invasive surgery(MIS). As a first step, based on an electrorheological(ER) fluid and spherical geometry, a new type of master device is developed and integrated with a virtual environment of MIS such as a surgical tool and human organ. The virtual object is then mathematically formulated by adopting the shape retaining chain linked(S-Chain) model. After evaluating reflection force, computational time, and compatibility with real time control, the virtual environment of MIS is formulated by interactivity with the ER haptic device in real space. Tracking control performances for virtual force trajectory are presented in time domain, and theirtrackingerrorsareevaluated.

  • A variable structure controller is developed for an AC servo motor used in CNC milling machines. The designed controller is implemented as an outer loop controller to a factory designed motor-servopack system. The robustness parameter is tuned for a fast response when the speed tracking error is large, while it is tuned for small oscillations when the speed tracking error is small. The designed controller is installed on a CNC machine using a PC. Cutting experiments show improved performance over the factory-designed controller.

  • A VSC with Inertial COFB(Coordinate-Operator Feedback) is presented for chattering alleviation. Athought the conventional sliding mode controller has good properties of robustness for disturbances or parameter variations, fast response, and easy implementation, there exists an inevitable chattering problem which deteriorates the control performance of system. VSC using Inertial COFB has properties of bounded feedback gain, reduced chattering, and robustness for disturbances or parameter variations. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through computer simulation for a position control of BLDCM.
