  • Dental ceramics exhibit excellent esthetic property, compressive strength, chemical durability, biocompatibility and translucency. This study evaluated the shear bond strength of composite resin to the new heat-pressed ceramic material (IPS-Empress System) depending on the surface treatments and bonding agents. The surface treatments were etching with 4.0% hydrofluoric acid, application of silane, and the combination of the two methods. Composite resin was bonded to ceramic with four kinds of dentin bonding agents(All-Bond 2, Heliobond, Scotch bond Multi-purpose and Tenure bonding agents). The ceramic specimen bonded with composite resin was mounted in the testing jig, and the universal testing machine(Zwick 020, Germany) was used to measure the shear bond strength with the cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. The results obtained were as follows 1. The mean shear bond strength of the specimens of which the ceramic surface was treated with the combination of hydrofluoric acid and silane before bonding composite resin was significantly higher than those of the other surface treatment groups(p<0.05). 2. In the case of All-Bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-purpose bonding agent group, the surface treatment methods did not influenced significantly on the shear bond(p>0.05). 3. Of the four bonding agents tested, the shear bond strength of Heliobond was significantly lower than those of other bonding agents regardless of the surface treatment methods(p<0.05). 4. The highest shear bond strength($12.55{\pm}1.92$ MPa) was obtained with Scotchbond Multipurpose preceded by the ceramic surface treatment with the combination of 4% hydrofluoric acid and silane.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect on treatment methods to shear bond strength between composite resin and amalgam when the alloy surface was finished with a diamond wheel or an sandblaster. Forty round acrylic cylinders were fabricated with a diameter of 33mm and a height of 20mm to fit into the device used during shear bond strength testing. A round undercut cavity (diameter, 8mm: depth, 2.5mm) was prepared in the center of the acrylic surface and the cavity was restored using a amalgam. A total of 40 acrylic cylinders with amalgam were divided into 4 groups according to treatment method. The group treatment were as follows : Group 1 : acid etching after finishing the amalgam with diamond wheel Group 2 : no acid etching after finishing the amalgam with diamond wheel Group 3 : acid etching after sandblasting the amalgam Group 4 : no acid etching after sandblasting the amalgam The shear bond strength of composite resin bonded to amalgam of each specimen was tested with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min and 500kg in full scale. The results were as follow: 1. After diamond finishing, the non-acid etching group had highest shear bond strength with 7.29kg/$cm^2$ and after sandblasting, the acidetching group had lowest shear bond strength with 4.49kg/$cm^2$. 2. In both diamond finishing and sandblasting group, acid etching of the roughened amalgam surface decreased the shear bond strength. 3. The group treated with a diamond wheel had higher shear bond strength those treated with an sandblaster but there was not significanat.

  • Traditionally, many kinds of mechanical bonding techniques were used for bonding resins to the surface of the metal alloys. If there is a seperation between resin and metal junction by stress accumulation and temperature change of oral cavity, the cracks or crazing may occur, accompanied by failure of resin bonding to metal. This study was designed to compare the shear bond strength of the type IV gold alloy and Cr-Co alloy surfaces treated with various methods and thermocycling. Universal Instron (Model 1000) and scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Japan) was used to record the shear bond strength of 5 groups. Forty specimens were made for each group ; group 1 was treated with sandblasting only, group 2 was coated with V-primer after sandblasting, group 3 was coated with Metal primer, group 4 wase coated with MR Bond and group 5 was coated with silane. After treated with various methods, thermocycling was done for half of the each group. The surfaces of failed pattern were observed with SEM. The results were as follows : 1. Shear bond strength of the group 1 was lower than that of another groups in type IV gold alloys and bond strength of the group 1, 2 were lower than that of group 3, 4, 5 in Cr-Co alloys. 2. Shear bond strength of the gold alloy with resin was higher than that of Cr-Co alloy when specimens were coated with V-primer. 3. Shear bond strength of the Co-Cr alloys with resin was higher than that of gold alloys when specimens were coated with Metal primer. 4. The bond strength of all specimens did not decreased significantly after thermocycling. 5. Adhesive failures were found in group 1 and Cr-Co alloy in group 2, but adhesive and cohesive failures were found in another groups.

  • PURPOSE. This laboratory study assessed the effect of different dentin cleaning procedures on shear bond strength of resin cements for recementing prosthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A $4{\times}4$ flat surface was prepared on the labial surface of 52 maxillary central incisors. Metal frames ($4{\times}4{\times}1.5mm$) were cast with nickel-chromium alloy. All specimens were randomly divided into 2 groups to be cemented with either Panavia F2.0 (P) or RelyX Ultimate (U) cement. The initial shear bond strength was recorded by Universal Testing Machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Debonded specimens were randomly allocated into 2 subgroups (n = 13) according to the dentin cleaning procedures for recementation. The residual cement on bonded dentin surfaces was eliminated with either pumice slurry (p) or tungsten carbide bur (c). The restorations were rebonded with the same cement and were subjected to shear test. Data failed the normality test (P < .05), thus were analyzed with Mann Whitney U-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and two-way ANOVA after logarithmic transformation (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The initial shear bond strength of group P was significantly higher than group U (P = .001). Pc and Uc groups presented higher bond strength after recementation compared to the initial bond strength. However, it was significant only in Pc group (P = .034). CONCLUSION. The specimens recemented with Panavia F2.0 provided higher bond strength than RelyX Ultimate cement. Moreover, a tungsten carbide bur was a more efficient method in removing the residual resin cement and increased the bond strength of Panavia F2.0 cement after recementation.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength between various commercial zirconia coping and veneering ceramic, and to observe the failure mode. Methods: For each zirconia block (iJAM Emerald, LUXEN Smile block, ICE Zirkon transluzent), 10 rectangular specimens were layered with Cercon ceram kiss, IPS e.max ceram, ICE Zirkon ceramic according to recommended by the manufacturer. The shear bond strength tests of the veneering porcelain to zirconia were carried out until fracture by a universal testing machine. After the shear bond tests, failure modes were characterized visually, under a stereomicroscope, such as adhesive, cohesive, or mixed. Data were analyzed with One-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe's tests. Results: The shear bond strength ($mean{\pm}SD$) of zirconia-veneer ceramic were JC group $13.9{\pm}3.6MPa$; JE group $17.7{\pm}2.4MPa$; JI group $15.1{\pm}2.5MPa$; LC group $9.5{\pm}1.5MPa$; LE group $16.2{\pm}2.3MPa$; LI group $12.6{\pm}0.8MPa$; ZC group $16.0{\pm}2.3MPa$; ZE group $18.5{\pm}3.4MPa$; and ZI group $15.3{\pm}3.2MPa$. The One-way ANOVA showed a significant difference between groups (p<0.05). The failure mode in most experimental groups was mixed failure, except for the LC group, which showed adhesive failure, and JE group, LE group and ZE group showed cohesive failure. Conclusion: For IPS e.max ceram, the shear bond strength value was highest for all kinds of zirconia blocks. For ICE Zirkon transluzent, the shear bond strength value was highest for all kinds of veneering ceramics. Most of experimental group interfaces revealed mixed failure mode.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment with Dentin Conditioner, Ultra-Etch, conditioner of Fuji Plus cement on the shear bond strength of resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements to dentin and analyze the fractured surfaces. To evaluate the bond strength, the extracted human teeth which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with conventional glass ionomer cement, 3M $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting (Vitremer luting cement), Fuji Plus cement after dentin pretreatment. The shear bond strength was measured using the Universal testing machine (Instron Co., USA) with a crosshead speed of 1mm/m. The effect of dentin pretreatment was evaluated by observing pretreated dentin surfaces under the scanning electron microscope, measuring the shear bond strength and observing the fractured surfaces under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : On the SEM observation of surface morphology, the specimens treated with Dentin Conditioner. Ultra-Etch and conditioner of Fuji Plus cement were removed the smear layer and funneled dentinal tubules in dentin surfaces. In $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting cement group, shear bond strength of pretreated group was significantly higher than control group. In Fuji Plus cement group and Fuji I group, regardless of the type of pretreatment agents, there was tendency of increase in the shear bond strength. On the SEM observation of fractured surfaces, as the shear bond strength increase, it were shown thicker cement layers and were not shown dentinal tubules According to these results. it were shown that dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states.

  • PURPOSE. To compare the shear bond strength of various veneering materials to grade II commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty specimens of CP-Ti disc with 9 mm diameter and 10 mm height were divided into three experimental groups. Each group was bonded to heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 199), porcelain (Triceram), and indirect composite (Sinfony) with 7 mm diameter and 2 mm height. For the control group (n=10), Lucitone 199 were applied on type IV gold alloy castings. All samples were thermocycled for 5000 cycles in $5-55^{\circ}C$ water. The maximum shear bond strength (MPa) was measured with a Universal Testing Machine. After the shear bond strength test, the failure mode was assessed with an optic microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was carried out with a Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney Test. RESULTS. The mean shear bond strength and standard deviations for experimental groups were as follows: Ti-Lucitone 199 ($12.11{\pm}4.44$ MPa); Ti-Triceram ($11.09{\pm}1.66$ MPa); Ti-Sinfony ($4.32{\pm}0.64$ MPa). All of these experimental groups showed lower shear bond strength than the control group ($16.14{\pm}1.89$ MPa). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the control group, and the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the Ti-Triceram group. Most of the failure patterns in all experimental groups were adhesive failures. CONCLUSION. The shear bond strength of veneering materials such as heat-polymerized acrylic resin, porcelain, and indirect composite to CP-Ti was compatible to that of heatpolymerized acrylic resin to cast gold alloy.
