In this paper, we have developed PPG pillow system for unconstrained respiration monitoring during sleep. The system employs a pillow containing a PPG sensor and a simple respiration extraction algorithm. The results showed that the extracted respiratory rhythm was found to have close relations with the reference signal. The system has an advantage of processing simplicity. A follow-up study should be performed to evaluate the system in terms of breath intake.

The respiration measurement method using the ultrasound sensor hardly gets an influence of an error of inertia and pressure and it is a respiratory detection device available semi-permanently. This device measures the amount and flow of respiration through using a delivery speed difference of the ultrasound waves that are a return format by the pneumatic stream that is a flogging of ultrasound waves during transmission and receipt as having used a characteristic of ultrasound waves. In this paper, it improved sensitivity of a signal to happen during transmission and receipt of a sensor because measurement must be performed with a patient to the center and measurement was played in a weak breathing so that it was possible.

In this paper, a miniaturized sensor interface circuit for the respiration detection system is proposed. Respiratory diagnosis is one of the main ways to predict various diseases. The proposed system consists of respiration detection sensor, temperature sensor, and interface circuits. Electrochemical type gas sensor using solid electrolytes is adopted for respiration detection. Proposed system performs sensing, amplification, analog-to-digital conversion, digital signal processing, and i2c communication. And also proposed system has a small form factor and low-cost characteristics through optimization and miniaturization of the circuit structure. Moreover, technique for sensor degradation compensation is introduced to obtain high accuracy. The size of proposed system is about 1.36 cm2.

Airway wall thickness is an important bio-marker for evaluation of pulmonary diseases such as stenosis, bronchiectasis. Nevertheless, an image-based analysis of the airway tree can provide precise and valuable airway size information, quantitative measurement of airway wall thickness in CT images involves various sources of error and uncertainty. So we have developed an accurate airway wall measurement technique for small airways with three-dimensional (3-D) approach. To illustrate performance of these techniques, we used airway phantom that consisted of 4 acryl tubes with various inner and outer diameters. Results show that evaluation of interpolation and deconvolution methods of airways in 3-D CT images, and significant improvement over the full-width-half-maximum method for measurement of not only location of the luminal and outer edge of the airway wall but airway wall thickness.

Sarcoglycanopathies are a rare group of autosomal recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDs) caused by genetic variants in α-, β-, γ-, or δ-sarcoglycan that maintain membrane integrity and contribute to molecular signal processing. High-throughput nucleotide sequencing was performed in patients with slowly progressive proximal muscle weakness from early childhood with respiratory involvement, which detected a novel homozygous nonsense variant (c.601C>T;p.Gln201Ter) in SGCB. This report informs about the clinical characteristics of LGMD2E (type-2E LGMD) in Korea and provides genetic confirmation of the disease.
Purpose: In this paper, we propose an algorithm for detecting respiratory rate and heart beat of a driver of car by exploiting Doppler radar, and verifying the feasibility of the study through experiments. Method: In this paper, we propose a weighted peak detection technique using peak frequency values. The tests are performed in stop-state and driving-state, and the experiment result is analyzed by two proposed algorithms. Result: The results showed more than 95% and 96% accuracy of respiratory and heart rate, respectively. It also showed more than 72% and 84% accuracy of those even for driving experiments. Conclusion: The proposed detection scheme for vital signs can be used for the safety of the driver as well as for prevention of a large size of car accidents.
Sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS) continues to be general cause of infant death. Also, apnea is supposed to be one of the main risk factor of SIDS. Therefore, Infant's respiratory monitoring and real-time apnea detection is very important to prevent SIDS. In this study, we proposed a non-contact home monitoring system for infant's respiration using Doppler radar in order to prevent SIDS. The respiration data were acquired from a commercialized baby simulator(Simbaby$^{TM}$) using a Doppler radar. To evaluate a performance of the proposed system, the simulator was placed in a supine and prone position and the chest belt was used simultaneously as a reference signal. As a result, correlation coefficients between respiration rates of Doppler radar and the chest belt in each position were 0.95(p < 0.001) and 0.98(p < 0.001), respectively. The averages of difference were $-0.29{\pm}5.21(mean{\pm}1.96{\cdot}$ standard deviation) in supine and $-0.12{\pm}3.05$ in prone from Bland-Altman analysis. The results indicated an excellent performance in detecting apnea with a sensitivity of 100% and a positive predictive value of 100% in each posture respectively. These results demonstrated that a proposed Doppler radar system is suitable for non-contact respiratory monitoring in order to prevent SIDS of infant.
The mucociliary system is one of the most important airway defense mechanisms in human body and impairment of ciliary movement results in various diseases in respiratory tract. In this study, we have developed a system that can measure ciliary movement in vivo and quantified ciliary beat frequency (CBF) through autoregressive (AR) power spectrum. To measure the frequency in vivo, we applied a photoelectric method that was composed of a laser light and a fiber optic probe. Scattered signals are transferred to a PC in which they are displayed on the monitor and its CBF is determined by the AR method in were acquired. For 8 normal subjects, the analyzed CBFs ranged from 5 to 10Hz and its mean was 7.3${\pm}$1.1Hz. This result showed similar aspects to the reported results of CBFs to data. We expect that this result will be applied in various clinical studies such as analysis of CBF changes by drugs or by diseaes.

Primary cilium has a signal transduction function that is essential for brain development, and also determines cell polarity and acts as a mediator for important signaling systems, especially the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) pathway. TBC1D32 is a ciliary protein, implicated in SHH signaling. Biallelic mutations in the TBC1D32 gene causes a kind of ciliopathy, heterogeneous developmental or degenerative disorders that affect multiple organs, including the brain. Here we report a boy who carried compound heterozygous variants in TBC1D32. The patient showed hypotonia, respiratory difficulty, and multiple anomalies at his birth. He was diagnosed with congenital hypopituitarism and treated with T4, hydrocortisone, and growth hormone. Despite the hormonal replacement, the patient needed long-term respiratory support with tracheostomy and nutritional support with a feeding tube. His developmental milestones were severely retarded. Hydrocephalus and strabismus developed and both required surgery, during the outpatient follow-up. Whole-exome sequencing indicated compound heterozygous variants, c.2200C>T (p.Arg734*) and c.156-1G>T, in TBC1D32 gene. This is the first Korean case of TBC1D32-related ciliopathy and we reported detailed and sequential clinical features. This case demonstrated the utility of whole-exome sequencing and provided valuable clinical data on ultra-rare disease.

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a rare disorder that is characterized by personality changes, irritability, depression, seizures, memory loss and dementia, and is commonly associated with small cell lung cancer. The cause is unknown but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder that develops secondary to a carcinomatous process. We report a patient with the clinical feature consistent with limbic encephalitis. A 64-year-old women developed disorientation, memory loss and general weakness. She was diagnosed with NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) with a brain metastasis 1 year earlier and was treated with radiation and chemotherapy. Although the lung mass and brain metastatic lesions had improved, the brain T2-weighted MRI showed high signal intensity in the right temporal region. This lesion consisted of with limbic encephalitis and was negative to the other viral and immune markers. The patient's symptoms did not improve after steroid treatment. Our case demonstrated that a NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) also can be associated with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis.
