Study on Variables Affecting Aging Anxiety: Comparison among Age Groups (노후불안인식 영향요인: 연령집단별 비교)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the perceived level of aging anxiety and the variables affecting the perception of aging anxiety by three different age groups and to find out what alternatives should be socially prepared to lower aging anxiety. We used survey data collected from 1,017 adults who are aged 18 and over and the subjects were divided into three age groups: 18-44 age group, 45-64 age group, over 65 age group. ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed to answer the research questions. Major findings of this study were as follows: 1) There was no difference in the perceived level of aging anxiety according to each age group, 2) 'perceived elderly stigma' was found to affect the perceived level of aging anxiety in all age groups, 3) 'perceived maximum age possible to work' was influencing the perceived level of aging anxiety in 18-44 age group and 45-64 age group, 4) 'perception of fairness to the operation of social systems' was a statistically significant variable for the perceived level of aging anxiety in the 45-64 age group and over 65 age group, 5) 'perception of age integration' and 'aging-friendly environment' variables had significant effects on the perceived level of aging anxiety only in over 65 age group. Suggestions for reducing the perceived level of aging anxiety have been proposed.

Aging Anxiety and Related Factors of Middle-Aged Adults (중년기 성인의 노화불안과 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify aging anxiety and influencing factors of middle-aged adults. Methods: Descriptive correlation design was used. Three hundred and three middle-aged adults participated in the study and completed the questionnaires in the period from September 11 to October 15 of 2011. The data was analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchial multiple regression analysis. Results: Aging anxiety of middle-aged adults was higher than a moderate level. Socio-demographic variables such as age, religion, education, economic level, perceived health status and experience of living with older adults influenced significantly on aging anxiety. In contrast, general self-efficacy, aging knowledge and attitude toward older adults were negatively correlated with aging anxiety. Hierarchial multiple regression analysis incorporating these variables showed an explanation rate of aging anxiety at 21%. And religion, perceived health status, attitude toward older adults, and general self-efficacy were statistically significant among variables that influence on aging anxiety. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that senior preparation programs that can enhance self-efficacy, induce positive attitude on older adults and promote health should be implemented to reduce aging anxiety of middle-aged adults.

The Influence of Aging Anxiety and Successful Aging on Retirement Preparation in Middle Aged Women (중년여성의 노화불안, 성공적노화가 노후준비에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This is a descriptive research examining the relationships between aging anxiety, perceived level of successful aging, and preparation for aging as well as factors influencing preparation for aging. Methods: Subjects of this study were 221 women aged between 40 and 59 years residing in area J. Data were collected from October 27, 2017 to November 9, 2017, using a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical program SPSS/WIN 24.0. Results: Regression analysis revaled that factors having a significant effect on the preparation for aging of the subjects were age, perceived health status, exercise, leisure activity, aging anxiety, and perception of successful aging. The total explanatory power was 42.3%. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it was found that aging anxiety and successful aging influenced the preparation for aging of middle-aged women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a nursing intervention that properly manage aging anxiety and improves successful aging, in order to encourage middle-aged women to actively prepare for their later lives.

Effect of Participation in Life Sports on Life Satisfaction of the Elderly (생활체육에 참여하는 노인의 삶의 만족도의 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of physical fitness and aging anxiety on life satisfaction among the elderly. Methods: The participants were 119 elderly. Data collection was conducted from July 1 to 10, 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS software. Results: The mean life satisfaction score was 4.10. Life satisfaction differed significantly according to several general characteristics: education level (p=.014), income (p<.001), living with partner (p=.041), perceived health status (p<.001), and number of chronic diseases (p<.001). Statistically significant positive relationships were observed between life satisfaction with muscle strength (r=.20) and, flexibility (r=.21), and a negative relationship was observed with aging anxiety (r=-.66). A total of 60.0% of life satisfaction was explained by income, perceived health status, muscle strength, flexibility, and aging anxiety. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop life sports programs to improve physical, social, and emotional health promotion with consideration for support to alleviate economic burden. Effect of life sports are evident as a way for healthy and energetic elderly. It should not be a simple exercise program but an integrated plan for improving physical, mental, and social health of the elderly.
