  • This attempts to study the change of land use pattern and to (md out the factors to impact the change of the pattern in metropolitan area of Seoul. The data are collected from the 9 units of geomorphological map of the study area with the help of Mapinfo techniques. The data are analyzed statistically with aids of SAS programs. Land use patterns are classified into two: rural and urban and population, urbanization, transportation, industrialization and land development programs are selected as independent variables to change the land use patterns from 1960-1990. The results may be summarized as follows : (1) Arable lands consisted of 30% of the total land in 1960 but the ratio of the arable land decreased to less than 25% in 1990 in the study area. (2) Urban land use types are dominant around southern part of Seoul but rural one are dominant around northern and eastern area of Seoul. (3) Rural type are influenced by population factor but urban land use type are related to transportation and population factors. Land development program is not a significant one to impact the land use pattern in the study area.

  • Average annual NDVI values from the NOAA/NASA Pathfinder AVHRR Land Data Sets from 1982 to 1994 showed comprehensive systematic displacement patterns in Asia. Inter-annual growing season data, however, did not show such systematic patterns. The most likely cause for the abrupt displacements, which appear especially in 1982, 1989 and 1990, may be changes in satellite sensors, although global warming, El Ni$\tilde{n}$o-Southern Oscillation events, changes in processing algorithms, and changes in land-use patterns in various parts of Asia may also play some role. The results suggest that researchers must be extremely careful in their inter-annual global change research, since direct use of the raw data could cause unexpected results. Growing-season NDVI shows decreases throughout most of Southeast Asia and modest gains in northern China and some parts in India, which could be related to land-use and land-cover changes.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply land use planning model (LUPM) to a test village. The LUPM was tested to Uhang village, Ucheon-myeon, Gangwon-do, and its parameters calibrated by land use data from 1973 to 1980. When two test cases were considered of its extended built areas of 10,600㎡ from 1980 to 1985 and 51,300㎡ from 1985 to 1992, there was good similarities between simulated and observed results with R$^2$ being more than 0.95. Land use transfer patterns to residential use could be very similarly simulated from LUPM when comparing the observed patterns, so, LUPM can be applied to the comprehensive simulation of land use change due to the village growth.

  • This research examined the capabilities of KOMPSAT-1 EOC images for the application of urban environment, including the urban changes of the study areas. This research is constructed in three stages: Firstly, for the application of change detection techniques, which utilizes multi-temporal remotely sensed data, the data normalization process is carried out. Secondly, the change detection method is applied for the systematic monitoring of land-use changes. Lastly, using the results of the previous stages, the land-use map is updated. Consequently, the patterns of land-use changes are monitored by the proposed scheme. In this research, using the multi-temporal KOMPSAT-1 EOC images and land-use maps, monitoring of urban growth was carried out with the application of land-use changes, and the potential and scope of the application of the EOC images were also examined.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the temporal land cover change by gradual urbanization of Gyeongan-cheon watershed. This study used the five land use of Landsat TM satellite images(l987, 1991, 2001, 2004) which were classified by maximum likelihood method. The five land use maps examine its accuracy by error matrix and administrative district statistics. This study analyze land use patterns in the past using time.series Landsat satellite images, and predict 2004 year land use using a CA-Markov combined CA(Cellular Automata) and Markov process, and examine its appropriateness. Finally, predict 2030, 2060 year land use maps by CA-Markov model were constructed from the classified images.

  • This research will examine into the capabilities of KOMPSAI-1 EOC image application in the field of urban environment and at the same time, with that as its foundation, come to understand the urban changes of the study areas. This research is constructed in three stages: Firstly, for application of change detection techniques, which utilizes multi-temporal remotely sensed data, the data normalization process is carried out. Secondly, change detection method is applied fur the systematic monitoring of land use changes, which utilizes multi-temporal EOC images. Lastly, by using the results of the application of land use changes, the existing land use map is updated. Consequently, the land-use change patterns are monitored, which utilize multi-temporal panchromatic EOC image data; and application potentials of ancillary data fur updating existing data can be presented. In this research, with the use of the land use change, monitoring of urban growth has been carried out, and the potential for the application of KOMPSAT-1 EOC images and the scope of application was examined. Henceforth, the future expansion of the scope of application of KOMPSAT-1 EOC image is anticipated.

  • Growing urban areas modify patterns of local land use and land cover. Land use changes associated with an urban area can be extensive. One way to understand and document land use change and urbanization is to establish benchmark maps compiled from satellite imagery The use of satellite imagery for monitoring urban growth has been widely demonstrated. Multi-temporal LANSAT TM image data has created the potential for monitoring urban change and land cover identification. In this study, for extracting urban boundary GLCM method and visual interpretation were used in CORONA imagery and SPOT imagery.

  • The city's countryside is adjusting to change by urbanization. The recent changes in rural landuse and damages of local landscape characteristics are very serious. But, few studies address the relationship between land-use and quality of landscape for these area. The aim of this study is to clarify causes and problems of the change through investigating changes of landscape as a function of land-use. The results are as follows 1) The change of landscape can be seen as a functional of land-use. Landscapes are characterized by changes of regional environments. These are the urban-rural fringe area which need special consideration for urban development and also for rural landscape quality. 2) 11 types of landscape patterns are found for landscape management. these are Regional commercial area, Apartment development, Recreation & seisure, Golfs, Housing complex, Industrial complex, Vinyl house, Rural village, Evaded facilities, Rivers, Cultural heritages. These landscape types are explained as 'stimuli-responses model'in Bryant's Forces of urbanization. 3) The policy implications of these study are as follows : First is the necessity of landscape management in Grown Management Zone and Natural Reserved Zone in the Metropolitan level, Second is the necessity of development control in semi- agricultural area. The last is the necessary of long range management plan in the urban-rural fringe area.

  • The purpose of the study were to detect and evaluate the land use and changes on the Balan Watersheds, located southwest of Suwon, using the Thematic Mapper(TM) data. Three sests of TM taken in 1985 , 1993 and 1996 were used and the changes in the land use analyzed and compared. The suupervised and unsuperivised classification methods were adoppted to classify five land-cover categories ; Paddy , upland , forest , residential , and water. Future ladn use patterns were simulated using a Markow chain method, and the change ratios presented.

  • This used a new method to capture the neighbouring relationship among parcels. To define the neighbouring relationship, all the surrounding parcels in the study area can be identified as neighbours of the current parcel as long as they touch each other even at a point. To examine neighbouring parcels on all polygons of the study area, this study used ArcViews avenue programming which visited each polygon in turn and produced an outfile containing the parcel record ID and the contents of each of the adjacent parcels. The second thing is to translate the record IDs of neighbouring parcels into land use. For this, this study used the Lookup function in Excel to obtain neighbouring land use. To deal with how to calculate the ratio of each land use to neighbouring land uses, this study used Visual Basic. finally, this study considered a term of neighbour land use as the ratio of the number of urban use adjacent parcels to the total number of adjacent parcels. This study shows that GIS and spatial analysis can be applied to land use change in the urban fringe area at a very detailed level using municipal parcel data which occupies about 80% of administrative affairs, especially at the local government level in Korea. The results of analysis can be useful for local government to understand its situation and to manage land use efficiently in the urban fringe. The methodology developed in this study is especially useful for an empirical approach.
