An under-tension system is frequently employed for large-span structures to reduce the deflection and member size. In this study, a microgenetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cross-section of truss structures with an undertension cable under transverse loading. Maximum deflection, allowable stress, and buckling were considered constraints. The proposed approach was verified using a 10-bar truss sample that shows good agreement with the previous results. In the numerical results, minimum-weight design of the under-tension structure was performed for various magnitudes of pretension.

We propose a novel ultra-short asymmetric vertical directional coupler switch (VDCS) with high extinction ratios larger than 30㏈ composed of switching operation induced section (SOIS), extinction ratio adjusted section (ERAS), and extinction ratio enhanced section (ERES). In this VDCSs, switching operation is achieved by changing the refractive index of one core in SOIS. The improvement of extinction ratios larger than 30㏈ for both cross and bar states is achieved by controlling the asymmetry of refractive indices between both cores in ERES. After propagating through ERAS with symmetry in the structure, different extinction ratios between cross and bar states at the end of SOIS are changed to the same value. For this reason, the optimum asymmetry of the refractive indices of cores to have the maximum extinction ratios and the lengths of ERES are the same for cross and bar states. Design guidelines to achieve high extinction ratios with large tolerances are presented.
In this paper, the optimum location of the belt truss-outrigger for a combined system of framed tube, shear core and outrigger-belt truss is calculated. The optimum location is determined by maximization of the first natural frequency. The framed tube is modeled using a non-prismatic cantilever beam with hollow box cross section. The governing differential equation is solved using the weak form integral equations and the natural frequencies of the structure are calculated. The graphs are introduced for quick calculation of the first natural frequency. The location of the belt truss-outrigger that maximizes the first natural frequency of the structure is introduced as an optimum location. The structure is modeled using SAP-2000 finite elements software. In the modelling, the location of the belt truss-outrigger is changed along the height of the structure. With various locations of the outrigger, the lateral deflection of the all stories and axial force in the columns of the outer tube are calculated. The analysis is repeated by locating the outrigger-belt truss at the optimum location. The analysis results are compared and effect of the optimum location on the lateral deflection and the shear lag phenomena are investigated.
In this paper, wake equalizing duct (WED) form optimization was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. A WED is a ring-shaped flow vane with a foil-type cross-section fitted to a hull in front of the upper propeller area. The main advantage of a WED is the power savings resulting from the uniformity of the velocity distribution on the propeller plane, a reduction in the flow separation at the aft-body, and lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section. This paper intends to evaluate these functions and find an optimized WED form for minimizing the viscous resistance and equalizing the wake distribution. In the optimization process, the study uses four WED parameters: the angle of the section, longitudinal location, and angles of the axes for the half rings against the longitudinal and transverse planes of the ship. KRISO 300K VLCC2 (KVLCC2) is chosen as an example ship to demonstrate the WED optimization. The optimization procedure uses genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results show that the optimized WED can reduce the viscous resistance at the expense of the uniformity of the wake distribution.
This paper presents the flutter analysis and optimum design of axially functionally graded box beam cantilever wing section by considering various geometric and material parameters. The coupled dynamic equations of the continuous model of wing system in terms of material and cross-sectional properties are formulated based on extended Hamilton's principle. By expressing the lift and pitching moment in terms of plunge and pitch displacements, the resultant two continuous equations are simplified using Galerkin's reduced order model. The flutter velocity is predicted from the solution of resultant damped eigenvalue problem. Parametric studies are conducted to know the effects of geometric factors such as taper ratio, thickness, sweep angle as well as material volume fractions and functional grading index on the flutter velocity. A generalized surrogate model is constructed by training the radial basis function network with the parametric data. The optimized material and geometric parameters of the section are predicted by solving the constrained optimal problem using firefly metaheuristics algorithm that employs the developed surrogate model for the function evaluations. The trapezoidal hollow box beam section design with axial functional grading concept is illustrated with combination of aluminium alloy and aluminium with silicon carbide particulates. A good improvement in flutter velocity is noticed by the optimization.

In this research mass of a plane strain two dimensional elastic concrete dam under gravitational and hydrostatic loads is minimized, through shape optimization of the dam cross section. Cross sectional area of the dam is taken as cost function of the optimization problem while constraints on the principal stress distribution and dam thickness are imposed. Shape of the boundary of the model is chosen as design variable. Variational formulation of the optimization problem, the material derivative idea of continuum mechanics, and an adjoint variable method are employed for the shape design sensitivity calculation. Then the gradient projection algorithm is utilized to obtain an optimum design iteratively. Research results fully demonstrate that the theory and procedure adopted are quite efficient and can be applicable to a wide class of practical elastic structural design problems.

Due to their high strength to weight ratios and excellent durability, fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) is widely used in construction industries. In this paper, a shape optimum design of FRP bridge decks haying pultruded cellular cross-section is presented. In the problem formulation, an objective function is selected to minimize the volumes. The cross-sectional dimensions and material properties of the deck of FRP bridges are used as the design variables. On the other hand, deflection limits in the design code, material failure criteria, buckling load, minimum height, and stress are selected as the design constraints to enhance the structural performance of FRP decks. In order to efficiently treat the optimization process, the cross-sectional shape of bridge decks is assumed to be a tube shape. The optimization process utilizes an improved Genetic Algorithms incorporating indexing technique. For the structural analysis using a three-dimensional finite element, a commercial package(ABAQUS) is used. Using a computer program coded for this study, an example problem is solved and the results are presented with sensitivity analysis. The bridge consists of a deck width of 12.14m and is supported by five 40m long steel girders spaced at 2.5m. The bridge is designed to carry a standard DB-24 truck loading according to the Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges in Korea. Based on the optimum design, viable cross-sectional dimensions for FRP decks, suitable for pultrusion process are proposed.

The purpose of this study is to present a method that can estimate the height of reaction facilities for large structural experiment through load flow as primary design procedure. The characteristic of the load transmission according to the type of experiment was analyzed to obtain tensile and compressive forces occurring on the reaction facilities. Strong walls that are affected by the bending moment is applied the post-tensioning method, and the strong floor under the control of the tension and compression is designed in accordance with the load flow. And the optimum cross-section of the reaction facilities was obtained by comparing the stresses of the tensile stress and crack the concrete. Through validating elastic analysis, the design results were satisfied a given design conditions.

The process of styrofoam pattern that has been used for material of press die pattern depends chiefly on handwork. Laser manufacturing system developed to increase precision and efficiency of process that is also able to convert the design easily. Applying the RP(rapid prototyping) concept reversely, the unnecessary part of section is vapored away by heat source of laser beam after converting 3-D CAD model into cross-sectional shape information. Laser beam is line-scanned in plane specimens to measure the depth and width of cut, surface roughness, cross-sectional shape as converting laser power, scanning speed, cutting gas pressure. With these basic data, plane surface, inclined surface, hole, outer contour trimming process is experimented and optimum condition are obtained. In plane and inclined surface experiments, 15W laser power and 50mm/s scanning speed make superior processing property and 30W, 10mm/s make processing efficiency increase in trimming process. With these results, simple patterns were manufactured and the possibility of applying laser manufacturing system to styrofoam pattern was convinced.

In this paper, the results of evaluation on the member forces in the virtual subsea tunnel lining segments and optimal thickness of the segment with changes in depth were presented. To evaluate member forces on the hypothetical subsea tunnelling cases were developed and the segmental lining member forces were calculated by performing structural analysis using the 2-Ring Beam model. Through a preliminary reinforcement design review of the cross-section using calculated member force, optimal reinforcement design was selected. Based on the results, the variations of member forces with construction conditions such as the cover depth and the hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, optimum segment lining designs were developed for various tunnelling conditions.
