Investigation of design methods in calculating the load-carrying capacity of mortise-tenon joint of timber structure

  • This study compares two prominent design provisions, National Design Specification (NDS) and Eurocode 5, on load-carrying capacity calculations and failure analysis for mortise-tenon joints. Design procedures of double-shear connection from both provisions were used to calculate load-carrying capacity of mortise-tenon joints with eight different bolt sizes. From this calculation, the result was validated using finite element analysis and failure criteria models. Although both provisions share similar failure modes, their distinct calculation methods significantly influence the design load-carrying capacity values. Notably, Eurocode 5 predicts a 6% higher design load-carrying capacity for mortise-tenon joints with varying bolt diameters under horizontal loads and 14% higher under vertical loads compared to NDS. However, the results from failure criteria models indicate that NDS closely aligns with the actual load-carrying capacity. This indicates that Eurocode 5 presents a less conservative design and potentially requires fewer fasteners in the final timber connection design. This evaluation initiates the potential for the development of a wider range of timber connections, including mortise-tenon joints with wooden pegs.

An Alternative Unit Root Test Statistic Based on Least Squares Estimator

  • Efforts to obtain more power for unit root tests have continued. Pantula at el.(1994) compared empirical powers of several unit root test statistics and addressed that the weighted symmetric estimator(WSE) and the unconditional maximum likelihood estimator(UMLE) are the best among them. One can easily see that the powers of these two statistics are almost the same. In this paper we explain a connection between WSE and UMLE and suggest a unit root test statistic which may explain the connection between them.

THE ASSESSMENT OF ABUTMENT SCREW STABILITY BETWEEN THE EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL HEXAGONAL JOINT UNDER CYCLIC LOADING

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Currently, many implant systems are developed and divided into two types according to their joint connection: external or internal connection. Regardless of the connection type, screw loosening is the biggest problem in implant-supported restoration. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the difference in stability of abutment screws between the external and internal hexagonal connection types under cyclic loading. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Each of the 15 samples of external implants and internal abutments were tightened to 30 N/cm with a digital torque gauge, and cemented with a hemispherical metal cap. Each unit was then mounted in a $30^{\circ}$ inclined jig. Then each group was divided into 2 sub-groups based on different periods of cyclic loading with the loading machine (30 N/ cm - 300 N/cm,14 Hz: first group $1{\times}10^6$, $5{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading; second group $3{\times}10^6$, $3{\times}10^6$ for a total cyclic loading of $6{\times}10^6$) The removal torque value of the screw before and after cyclic loading was checked. SPSS statistical software for Windows was used for statistical analysis. Group means were calculated and compared by ANOVA, independent t-test, and paired t-test with ${\alpha}$=0.05. RESULTS: In the external hexagonal connection, the difference between the removal torque value of the abutment screw before loading, the value after $1{\tims}10^6$ cyclic loading, and the value after $1{\times}10^6$, and additional $5{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading was not significant. The difference between the removal torque value after $3{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading and after $3{\times}10^6$, and additional $3{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading was not significant. In the internal hexagonal connection, the difference between the removal torque value before loading and the value after $1{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading was not significant, but the value after $1{\times}10^6$, and additional $5{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading was reduced and the difference was significant (P < .05). In addition, in the internal hexagonal connection, the difference between the removal torque value after $3{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading and the value after $3{\times}10^6$, and additional $3{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading was not significant. CONCLUSION: The external hexagonal connection was more stable than the internal hexagonal connection after $1{\times}10^6$, and additional $5{\times}10^6$ cyclic loading (t = 10.834, P < .001). There was no significant difference between the two systems after $3{\times}10^6$, and additional $3{\times}10^6$ cycles.

다중 연결이 가능한 터미널 에뮬레이터 개발 (Development of Multi-connection Terminal Emulator)

  • 최근 IoT의 발전으로 다양한 통신방식을 지원하는 장치들을 서로 연결하여 데이터를 송 수신하는 사례가 증가하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 직렬통신, TCP, UDP, ZigBee, Bluetooth 등 여러 가지 통신 방식을 지원하는 멀티터미널 에뮬레이터를 제안한다. 이 시스템은 각 통신 방식 별로 여러 개의 채널 연결을 지원하고, 데이터 전송을 예약할 수 있고, 통신 데이터 통계를 수집하여 그래프로 표현하고, 로그 기록을 저장하는 기능을 제공한다. 이 시스템을 사용함으로써 다중 장치간 통신 연결을 테스트할 수 있게 되어, IoT 시스템 개발에 편의성을 제공할 것으로 기대한다.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems of the existing interior architecture connection qualification and propose the desirable direction of development. To do this, this study suggested basic materials for the connection between the qualification for interior architecture and practical business, and for an efficient qualification. For methods, first, this study analyzed the flow and the ratio of successful applicants of the qualification of interior architecture in order to consider problems. Secondly, this study grasped the composition of examination. Thirdly, this study examined the changes of the questions in standards. Fourth, this study investigated overseas examples. In addition, this study conducted a questionnaire for professionals engaging in practical business in order to contribute for establishing the desirable frame of qualification of interior architecture through the analysis and comparison of the results.

  • Semi-rigid frames are frames for whcih the connections joining the beam and column are neither fully rigid nor perfectly pinned. In reality, all steel frames are semi-rigid in nature as all connections exhibit a certain degree of flexibility under loads. For semi-rigid frmaed structures, it is tended to reduce more rigidity of the member for the nonlinear behavior of connections and the P-delta effects of framed structure. To predict the actual behavior of semi-rigid steel frames, a more realistic analysis methods which explicitly takes into account the effect of connection flexibility should be used. In this research, the effect of connection flexibility in the semi-rigid structure has been investigated. To predict the response of flexibility connected frames, the algorithm of semi-rigid steel frame is developed using connection model having nonlinear spring on end of beam.

  • Green Frame is a Rahmen structure made of composite precast concrete members. According to the concrete design code, a lower rebar of precast concrete girder, should be extended to the inner precast concrete column. However, such extension of lower rebar may sharply reduce its constructability. To satisfy the criteria, the connection and anchorage of beam rebar should be taken into consideration, yet it is difficult to use lapping as it is not easy to ensure enough space when Green Frame method is adopted. To solve this, a new method of lower rebar connection and anchorage was developed, and this study is intended to review economic feasibility prior to applying the method developed onto sites. The study result can be used as basic data for selection of the optimal joint and anchorage method for lower rebar of the green frame construction.

Sway of semi-rigid steel frames - Part 1: Regular frames

  • Lateral sway is most likely to control the design of semi-rigid steel frames where the frame arrangements do not include any form of bracing. This paper investigates the sway behaviour of semi-rigid regular steel frames i.e., frames having the same arrangement of beam and column sections at all levels, and hence proposes some design charts for the prediction of sway that eliminate the need for doing any numerical modelling. Schueller's equation has also been modified to incorporate connection flexibility in addition to its original rigid frame considerations. All the proposed methods have been validated using results obtained from numerical analysis.

  • 인터넷을 통해 사용자 정보가 여러 망을 거치는 동안 연동지점에서의 처리 지연은 고속 전송에 큰 부담이 되며 종단간의 심리스 연결이 가능하다면 좋은 해결책이 될 것이다. 이 논문에서는 ATM-LAN에 유력한 MPOA 망과 백본 기술로 적용이 검토되고 있는 MPLS 망을 심리스 연결하기 위한 방안을 제시한다. 두 망의 특징을 비교하고, 연동에 필요한 요구사항을 제시하며, 적용 가능한 세가지 연동 방안을 기술한다. 제시된 연동방안은 LER에서 ATM VC와 LSP를 심리스 연결함으로써 IP 룩업에 소요되는 처리 지연을 최소화하고 종단간 전송 지연을 줄인다. 각 연동 방안들의 세부 동작 절차와 특징을 기술하고, 잭슨망 이론을 이용하여 제시된 연동 방안들의 종단간 전송지연을 분석하고 그 결과를 비교한다.

Bolted connections to tubular columns at ambient and elevated temperatures - A review

  • Tubular column members have been widely adopted in current construction due to its numerous advantages. However, the closed-section profile characteristics of tubular columns severely limit the connection possibilities. Welding type is acceptable but discouraged because of on-site issues. Blind-bolted connection is preferable because of its simplicity, economic benefit, and easy assembly. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on bolted connections to tubular columns for bare steel tubes, including square and circular sections. Available studies on bolted connections at ambient and elevated temperatures are reviewed, but emphasis is given on the latter. Various methods of determining the connection performance through experimental, analytical, component based, and finite element approaches are examined. Future research areas are also identified.
