Wooden framed structures with semi-rigid connections: Quantitative approach focused on design needs

  • Mechanical connections are recognized as extremely important elements in the aspect of strength and structural safety. However, classical structural model does not consider the connection stiffness properties, and are based on models with pinned or rigid joints only. In fact, mechanical connections are deformable and behave not linearly, affecting the whole structure and inducing nonlinear behavior as well. The quantification of this effect, however, depends on the description of the working of the connectors and the wood response under embedment. The theoretical modeling of wood structures with semi-rigid connections involves not only the structural analysis, but also the modeling of both single and grouped moment resisting connectors and the study of the wood properties under embedment. The proposal of this paper is to approach these aspects, and to quantitatively study the influence of the moment resistant connection in wooden framed structures. Comparisons between rigid and semi-rigid connections and between linear and nonlinear analysis lead to quantitative results.

  • This study presents an experimental study of the structural behavior for steel plate-concrete column-to-steel girder connections. Experiments were carried out to investigate the moment-rotation characteristics, failure behavior and ultimate moment capacity of these connections. The results of this experimental study involving three welded moment-resisting connections subjected to cyclic loading are presented. The specimens were fabricated at full scale to evaluate their hysteretic behavior. A description of the test specimens, the details of the joint, the test system and the testing methods are described. The test results showed that the structural behavior of these composite connections was influenced by the connection details.

  • A tensegrity module structure is suitable type for spatial structures. Because the tensegrity is composed of set of discontinuous compressive elements (struts) floating within a net of continuous tensile elements (cables), the system can provide the basis for lightweight and strong. However, despite the advantages of tensegrities, design and fabrication of the systems have difficulty because of form-finding methods, pin-connection and the control of prestress. In this paper, the new pin-connection method was invented to make the tensegrity module. The production process and practical implementation of uniformly compressed the tensegrity structures by using a UTM are described. Experiments showed the mechanical response and failure aspects of the tensegrity system.

최적신뢰성에 의한 강구조물의 강접합부 연구 (A Study On Optimum Reliability of Rigid Connection in Steel Structures)

  • In this study, three most distinct types of general rigid connections are included in the modelling, with is implemented into a computer code. The cost, functions of connections are constructed by using the estimated unit cost of bolting, welding and connection-steel elements incorporating all the effect of materials, labor, and fabrication work. Bused on the recent developments of the reliability-based structural analysis and design as well as the extending knowledge on the probabilistic characteristics of load and resistances, the probability based design criteria have been successfully developed for many standards. Since the probabilistic characteristics depend highly on the local load and resistances, it is recognized to develop the design criterion compatible with domestic requirements. The existing optimum design methods, which are generally based on the structural theory and certain engineering experience, do not realistically consider the uncertainties of load and resistances and the basic reliability concepts.

  • Most of the control point surveying use a triangulation point and a bench mark with Total Station and Level. nowadays, the research is being accomplished for practical use of GPS. but In this study the optimum time and the optimum occupation time are analyzed, so as to examine possibility of the control point surveying that use GPS continuous station data of National Geography Institute. Also, The efficient surveying methods that compare the result of data that processed using broadcast ephemeris with the result of data that processed using precise ephemeris. As a result of that, Error feature analysis of the control point surveying in connection with GPS continuous observation will provide us estimation of errors and efficient topography information acquisition

Understanding the connection between O32 and LyC escape based on numerical simulations

  • Identifying the main source of reionization is one of the essential astrophysical problems that remain to be solved. But there are difficulties in directly measuring the Lyman continuum (LyC) escape fraction (fesc) from high-z galaxies, and other indirect methods have been suggested to identify potential LyC leakers. The O32 ratio ([OIII] λ5007 / [OII] λ3727) is one of those examples, which appear to positively correlate with fesc according to some observations and photoionization modelling of HII regions. However, recent studies fail to find such a correlation. Here we exploit a set of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of giant molecular clouds to understand the physical connection between O32 and fesc. We post-process our simulations with the photo-ionization code Cloudy, and discuss the results obtained from the runs with different metallicities and input SEDs.

  • 철골조는 작용하중을 지탱하기 위한 구조시스템 중의 하나로 널리 사용되고 있고, 보와 기둥의 강성, 보와 기둥의 강성, 지점조건, 보강의 유무, $P-{\Delta}$효과 등의 변화에 따른 영향들을 포함하는 최적의 설계를 필요로 한다. 본 연구는 볼트 수의 변화에 의한 더블앵글 접합부의 회전강성 변화가 철골조의 거동에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 진행되었다. 또한, 수평 수직하중을 동시에 받는 더블앵글로 접합된 골조의 처짐에 대한 제한 조건을 만족하도록 하는 최대 허용하중 산정에 관한 연구도 병행하였다. 더블앵글 접합부의 회전강성을 얻기 위하여 접합부 실험을 수행하였고, 골조의 처짐 및 최대 작용하중을 정확하게 파악하기 위한 단순해석 모델도 제안하였다.

  • For the seismic analysis of typical roadway bridges provisions are given in most codes for analysis models, which describes however only fundamental modelling methods according to the basic theories of structural dynamics. In practice even conventional non-seismic analysis models, separate super- and substructure models, are applied, which are not adequate because of neglecting connection elements. In this study three typical roadway bridges, a Steel box bridge, a PC beam bridge and a PC box bridge are selected and simple models integrating super- and substructure as well as connection elements are given. The simple models are composed with frame elements with lumped masses representing stiffness and mass characteristics of the selected bridges. To check the properness of the simple models, analysis results with the simple models are compared with those obtained with detailed models in view of bridge failure mechanisms. It is proved that the simple models can be used in the preliminary design phase fur the determination of failure mechanisms of typical roadway bridges.

용접 및 볼트 연결부 균열을 고려한 사장교 케이블 정착부의 동특성 해석 (Dynamic Characteristics of Cable-Stayed Anchorage considering Cracks at Bolt and Welding Connection)

  • 용접 및 볼트 연결부 균열이 사장교 케이블 정착부의 동특성에 미치는 영향을 파악하여, 국부적으로 취약한 케이블 정착부의 손상을 현장에서 쉽게 탐지할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였다. 해석대상 구조물로서 현재 서해안고속도로의 일부로 시공되고 있는 서해대교 케이블 정착부를 선택하였다. 케이블과 정착부의 연결판을 케이블요소 및 쉘요소로 함께 모델링하여 자유진동해석을 수행하였다. 해석결과 케이블 정착단에서 용접부 균열이 발생한 경우, 연결판의 고유진동수가 균열이 발생하지 않은 경우에 비하여 최대 16%정도 작아짐을 확인하였다. 따라서, 연결판의 고유진동수를 측정하여 케이블 정착부의 손상을 충분히 파악할 수 있다고 판단된다.

  • Power devices for high power drivers that need high switching speed (IGCT, HVIGBT) have been continuously developed. However, serial and parallel connections using several much cheaper, lower power capacity of devices than an expensive high power device are very useful methods in the aspect of cost down and high power application. Even the current and voltage unbalance problem is occurred at each devices. This unbalance characteristics are mainly caused by the differences of physical characteristics of each devices and the line inductance (stray inductance) of bus bars that consist of current path. This paper deals simulation analysis of serial connection of IGCTs and parallel connection of IGCTs using physical model of devices. And also, introduces the method to reduce the voltage and current unbalance problem.
