  • In order to expect the effect of silica with large quantity application of current Fused calcium-magnesium phosphate on the paddy rice, there are difficulties of excess phosphorus application because of the high content of phosphate in this fertilizer. This experiment was discussed on the effect of posphate and silica absorbed by rice plant from the low concentrated fused calcium-magnesium phosphate which was fused with mixture of rock phosphate, chemical calcium oxide, magnesium oxide and silicate oxide in the furnace using coke, 1. The fusion material contained 8.9% of citric acid soluble $P_2O_5$ and 33% of soluble $SiO_2$. 2. The rice yields were increased with high significance accompanying the application levels of fused material amounts. 3. No. of grains per head, weight of 1,000 grains and percent of filled grain were caused to increase the productivity of rice plant on account of the high content of silica in straws absorbed from fusion material. The treatment of 300 kg/10a. was the highest yield among the levels of fusion material. 4. At the growing periods of rice plant, amount of absorbed phosphate was higher in the small amount treatment of fusion material until the formation period of young head, and was highest in the treatment of 300 kg/10a. leval among them but slightly desreased at 500 kg/10a. level at the harvest. Amount of absorbed silica was the same trend with phosphorus at the begining of growth period but increased rapidly from the formation period of young head to harvest in the large quantity application levels. 5. Much amount of nutrients were residued in the soil after experiment pacing with application levels. 6. The effect of silica and phosphate on rice plant can be expected with fusion material but it is necessary to decrease the phosphate content on account of the large residue of phosphate in the soil after experiment.

  • Poor establishment of white dover (Trifolium repens L.) into grass-dominant pastures has been limited its availability. The experiment was done to clarify the effects of timing of initial defoliation, defoliation frequency on the regrowth and nodule formation of the clover cultivars during 28-day regrowing period. Individual plants of cv. Regal, Louisiana S-1 (La. S-1), Grasslands Huia (Huia) and Aberystwyth S184 (S184) were grown in containers until grown to unifoliolate, 1, 2, 4, or 8 trifoliolate stage, and then clipped to 1cm in height every 7 or 28 day for 28 days. To measure the effects, plants were sampled immediately after final harvest, and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after the harvest. Shoot, root dry weight and biomass were reduced with earlier, more frequent defoliation or shorter regrowing period. In frequent defoliation shoot dry weight and biomass were increased with delayed initial defoliation while in less frequent defoliation steeply done when initial defoliation was delayed to 4 trifoliolate stage. Shoot /Root ratio inclined with more frequent defoliation or lengthened regrowing period, and was greater in initial defoliation of unifoliolate to 2 trifoliolate than the others. Although nodules no. per plant declined with earlier or more frequent defoliation, the effect disappeared to some extent after 14-day regrowth. In comparison with the others, Regal had the highest shoot. dry weight and biomass to 2 trifoliolate stage while S184 did the most nodules regardless of defoliation timing. On 7-day after last defoliation nodule formation of Regal, Huia and S184 but on 28-day after last defoliation that of La. S-1, Huia and S184 was positively correlated to shoot and root dry weights upto 2 trifoliolate stage. On the former day, however, that was negatively correlated to Shoot /Root ratio upto 1 trifoliolate stage although on the latter day it was not, meaning that in addition to more frequent defoliation earlier defoliation was harmful in nodule formation of white clover.

  • This study was designed to investigate the supplementary effects of Lentinus edodes which were harvested at different time period and part on acetylcholine content and its related enzyme activities in the brain of diabetic mouse model (KK mouse). We fed mice with standard diet (Control diet; CON) or 4 different kinds of experimental diets (DGC: on time harvested, cap of Dong Go; DGS: on time harvested, stipe of Dong Go; HSC: late harvested, cap of Hyang Sin: HSS: late harvested, stipe of Hyang Sin) to KK mouse for 8 weeks. Neurotransmitter such as acetylcholine contents, acetylcholinesterase activities, monoamine oxidase-B ac-tivities and lipid peroxide contents in the brain were measured. The results showed that acetylcholine content was significantly higher in DGC and HSC groups than CON group. The activities of acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase-B enzyme were significantly inhibited in the brain of DGC and HSC groups compared with CON group. Lipid peroxide content was lower in DGC group than CON group. These results suggested that the cap of Lentinus edodes which were harvested on time and late time contain increased acetylcholine content and decreased acetylcholinesterase activities, monoamine oxidase-B activities and lipid peroxide contents. Thus the cap of Lentinus edodes which were harvested at different time periods may play an effective role in enhancing cognitive function.

  • Recently, many problems are occurring in the bee ecosystem due to rapid climate change. The decline in the bee population and changes in the flowering period are having a huge impact on the harvest of bee-keepers. Since it is impossible to continuously observe the beehives in the hive with the naked eye, most people rely on knowledge based on experience about the state of the hive. Therefore, interest is focused on smart beekeeping incorporating IoT technology. In particular, with regard to swarming, which is one of the most important parts of beekeeping, we know empirically that the swarming time can be determined by the sound of the queen bee, but there is no way to systematically analyze this with data. You may think that it can be done by simply recording the sound of the queen bee and analyzing it, but it does not solve various problems such as various noise issues around the hive and the inability to continuously record. In this study, we developed a system that records queen bee sounds in a real-time cloud system and analyzes sound patterns. After receiving real-time analog sound from the hive through multiple channels and converting it to digital, a sound pattern that was continuously output in the queen bee sound frequency band was discovered. By accessing the cloud system, you can monitor sounds around the hive, temperature/humidity inside the hive, weight, and internal movement data. The system developed in this study made it possible to analyze the sound patterns of the queen bee and learn about the situation inside the hive. Through this, it will be possible to predict the swarming period of bees or provide information to control the swarming period.

  • Bioenergy is generally considered to be one of the options for pursuing carbon neutrality. However, for a period of time, combustion of harvested plant biomass inevitably causes more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than combustion of fossil fuels. This paper proposes a method that predicts and minimizes the total amount and payback period of this carbon debt. As a case study, a carbon cycle impact assessment was performed for immediate switching of the currently used fossil fuels to biomass. This work points out a fundamental vulnerability in the concept of carbon neutrality. As an action plan for the sustainability of bioenergy, formulas for afforestation proportional to the decrease in the forest area and surplus harvest proportional to the increase in the forest mass are proposed. The results of optimization indicate that the carbon debt payback period is about 70 years, and the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases by more than 50% at a maximum and 3% at a steady state. These are theoretically predicted best results, which are expected to be worse in reality. Therefore, biomass is not truly carbon neutral, and it is inappropriate as an energy source alternative to fossil fuels. The method proposed in this work is expected to be able to contribute to the approach to carbon neutrality by minimizing present and future carbon debt of the bioenergy that is already in use.

  • The appearance of abnormal weather caused by climate change have both direct and indirect impact on the society. Especially, agriculture is brought up as a socially important interest having direct impact of climate change in growth and harvest of crops. This study aims to perform vulnerability assessment for the South Korea's two main imported grains, maize and wheat. The production vulnerability assessment of maize and wheat in USA and China to temperature variability, which has a great impact in production, is performed. First, grain cultivation period which affects productivity of main grain production country was selected based on the main cultivation period from several references and previous studies. Then, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change AR5 greenhouse gas scenario RCP(representative concentration pathways)8.5 scenarios was used to select the future climate that correspond to the cultivation period of maize and wheat for each producing country. According to the result of production vulnerability analysis using adaptation (temperature changing trend) and sensitivity(temperature variability), the productivity of wheat was higher in USA, while productivity of maize was higher in China. In the future, the result showed that productivity of all two grains will be favorable in USA. The result of production vulnerability assessment through this study can later be used as a preparation data for the coming fluctuation in grain price due to climate change.

  • Among flies inside mushroom growing rooms in three farms, Lycoriella ingenua and Megaselia tamilnaduensis were the most common and dominant species during Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation in Korea. In the past, generally, during the incubation period, a low density of mushroom flies was observed in all farms. After the first harvest, mushroom flies density tended to increase sharply. However, many mushroom flies were observed in the summer, despite that season corresponds to the incubation period. This is because annual cultivation systems provide a safe overwintering place compared to seasonal selective ones. The ecology of mushroom flies varies greatly according to the cultivation system. We confirmed that a fallow period reduced the density of mushroom flies. From a survey of the three dimensional distribution of mushroom flies in a growing room, we observed that M. tamilnaduensis showed more positive phototaxis and a higher variation per point of capture than that by L. ingenua. Through this study, two mushroom fly species were identified in the survey farms, with markedly different three dimensional distribution patterns.

  • Effects of infection time of the clubroot pathogen, Plasmodiophora brassicae, on yield loss of Spring-sown Chinese cabbage plants were examined in field experiments. Yield loss of Chinese cabbage plants increased as the infection time becomes early. Plants infected at 20 days after transplanting or earlier were completely killed before harvest, and those infected at 30 days after transplanting were healthy in appearance but their head weights were reduced to 59% with poor commodity value. The plants infected 40 days after transplanting were not affected in yield. Development of root hairs in diseased plants was greatly reduced as the infection progressed, and root length was reduced to 1/2 to 1/3 of that of healthy plants. root galls were first developed 20 days after inoculation and rapidly enlarged to reach the peak in size 20 days from initial development, and decayed thereafter. Development and decay of root galls tended to be faster at later season as air temperature became high, regardless of the infection time. Diseased plants started to wilt approximately 10 days after root gall development. Root galls began to decay 10 days after initial plant wilting, and then were completely rotten within following 10 days. Based on the results, root gall development stages on spring-sown Chinese cabbage plants could be grouped into 20 days of root gall enlargement period, and 10 days of root gall decay period, followed by survival period in soil.

  • This study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of postharvest ripening periods and packaging methods on maintaining the quality of fresh-cut winter squash. Winter squash (var. Bouchang) was ripened at $22^{\circ}C$ for 1 or 2 weeks after harvest. The samples were washed in tap water, sanitized in $100{\mu}L/L$ chlorine water, peeled, and cut into 16 parts. Samples were then vacuum packaged or non-vacuum packaged in $80{\mu}m$ nylon/polyethylene (Ny/PE) films and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 21 days. Results indicated that different postharvest ripening periods affected gas concentration, firmness, off-odor development, color, and overall quality of fresh-cut winter squash. Samples treated with 2-week ripening periods maintained quality with higher redness value and soluble solid content (SSC) and lower $CO_2$ concentration and off-odor development compared to samples treated with a 1-week ripening period. Non vacuum packaging was effective in increasing visual quality and reducing off-odor development. A combination treatment of 2-week ripening periods and non-vacuum packaging maintained good quality with the lowest off-odor development and the highest visual quality scores at the end of the storage period.

  • In Korea, potatoes have served as a side dish, but their role as snacks, such as chips or French fries, has recently gained traction. While there is a high demand for processing potatoes, there remains a dearth of research on the impact of double cropping, particularly during autumn, on processing quality. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effects of different spring potato cultivation periods on growth, yield, and processing quality during autumn cultivation. Following spring planting, harvest was carried out four times: 70 days, 80 days, 90 days, and 100 days. Subsequently, autumn cultivation was carried out in Gangneung and Seocheon regions using these seed potatoes. Results showed an increase in above-ground emergence rate with shorter spring growing period. When seed potatoes with a spring cultivation period of 80 and 90 days were grown in the autumn in the Gangneung region, the stem length was 47.2 to 48.9, which was greater than that of other treatments. However, stem number and leaf color (SPAD) showed no significant differences across cultivation periods. The number of tubers, tuber weight, yield, and marketable yield did not vary significantly with cultivation periods but described clear cultivar dependent differences. The tuber weight of the Saebong cultivar in Gangneung and the Eunseon cultivar in Seocheon was superior. The starch content peaked at 7.9% when seed potatoes grown for 80 days in the spring were harvested after autumn cultivation in the Gangneung region, but there was no significant differences in the Seocheon region. Glucose content showed a clear difference depending on the cultivation period, increasing with longer spring cultivation period during autumn cultivation. In conclusion, as a result of the effect of the spring potato cultivation period on the growth, yield, and processing quality of tubers when cultivating potatoes in double-cropping, the differences depending on the cultivation period were insignificant, while cultivar-based disparities were pronounced. The Eunseon cultivar exhibited robust above-ground growth and yield, while the Saebong cultivar demonstrated excellent processing quality.
