Purpose: In this study, we sought to identify the impact of aging anxiety and successful aging on the personality traits of elderly. Method: Subjects were 108 elderly persons aged more than 65 years. Data collected from June to November 2015 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: With regard to the mean scores of personality traits, conscientiousness yielded the highest score, and neuroticism the lowest. The mean score on aging anxiety was below average, and that on successful aging was above average. Aging anxiety differed significantly according to age, present job, economic status, and health status. Successful aging differed significantly according to having a spouse, economic status, and health status. Significant correlations were found between anxiety and conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism, and between successful aging and conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, openness, and neuroticism. Conscientiousness and neuroticism had an effect on aging anxiety (23.2%), whereas conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, openness, and neuroticism affected aging anxiety (45.3%). Conclusion: These findings indicate that personality traits reduce aging anxiety and lead to successful aging among elderly.

Four hundred and thirty eight home helpers working in a home help agency were given the questionnaire containing the Kyung San Facts on Aging Quiz to measure the level of knowledge about aging and Yoon (1988)'s scale to find the direction of attitude toward the elderly. The results of this study are analyzed as follows: (1) The home helpers' level of knowledge about aging was 59.1%, which was lower than nurses' level (65.0%) and social workers' level (65.3%). And the paid home helpers' level of knowledge about aging was 61.2%, which was significantly different from the unpaid home helpers' level (57.0%). (2) Using 5 points scale, mean of home helpers' attitude toward the elderly was 2.56 (51.2%), which was different from nurses' attitude (40.6%) and social workers' attitude (62.0%). And the paid home helpers' attitude toward the elderly's action (29.9%) was significantly different from the unpaid home helpers' attitude (32.6%). (3) Using multiple regression analysis, the home helpers' levels of knowledge about aging was the most significant predictor to explain the home helpers' attitude toward the elderly. The other variables that are also statistically significant predictors of the home helpers' attitude were sex, voluntary experience for the elderly, age, city size, and personal experience with the elderly. Especially the significant predictors to explain the paid home helpers' attitude were their levels of knowledge about aging and city size. On the other hand, the significant predictors to explain the unpaid home helpers' attitude were sex and age. Based on the research results, implications for practice and future research are discussed, and education methods for making home helpers' attitude toward the elderly more positive are also suggested.
This study was conducted to examine how Korean elderly perceive elements of successful aging, and to explore the meanings of a successful life in the contexts of the life experiences of the Korean elderly. From life-contextual perspectives, this study explored differences in perception on successful aging by gender and by class (economic status). Forty elderly persons aged 65 and over participated in this study. The data on the perceptions of successful aging in their own life contexts were collected through in-depth interviews. The major result of this study indicates that there are differences in the key theme of successful aging by class (economic status), because cultural and economic contexts influenced the elderly persons' perception of successful aging. This study will help researchers, educators, and practitioners to understand successful aging experience as well as establish the concept of successful aging among Koreans.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to the relationship between life satisfaction, health behaviors, and successful aging and factors associated with successful aging. Methods: Participants in this study included 159 elders living in one city. Data on life satisfaction (Choi's Life Satisfaction Scale for Korean elderly, 1984), health behaviors (Choi & Kim's Health Behaviors Scale for Korean elderly, 1997), and successful aging (Kim & Shin's Successful Aging Scale for Korean elderly, 2005) were collected by trained interviewers. For analysis of collected data, the PASW 18.0 program was used, which included descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Multiple regression. Results: Results showed a positive correlation between life satisfaction, health behaviors, and successful aging. Life satisfaction, self-perceived health status, and health behavior explained 60.8% of successful aging. Conclusion: There is a need to help improve health behavior and self-perceived health status of elders. We should also understand life satisfaction over their life span and establish a program that encourages healthy behavior in the community. Accordingly, these efforts will allow for achievement of a more successful aging process for the elderly.

This study suggests the general support center with comprehensive services for the elderly. In general, the modifications of the elderly housing have a direct influence on the "Quality of life" and "Aging in place" for the elderly. But until now, the elderly housing modification has been carried out separately on the elderly welfare category. It is very inefficient and inconvenient for the elderly. Therefore, it is necessary to have a comprehensive organization that includes the implementation of modifications. To provide reasons for this insistence, this study analyzed the previous research, legal system guidelines, and others related things. And it researched the perception of the comprehensive institution and the need for housing modification through the recognition survey of the elderly and the early elderly. The study found that the current domestic legal system does not have an integrated system to carry out the entire process of applying and implementing the elderly housing modification. On the other hand, the results of the survey showed that the elderly hoped to introduce a comprehensive and user-friendly institution for housing modification.

The research findings showed that the recognition for design elements of residential environment for the elderly of respondents was changed toward positive way after visiting the Aging Simulation Center. The Aging Simulation Center was an effective educational environment for the preliminary designers to understand aging and the importance of appropriate design for users' needs. That is, aging simulation space can improve recognition of necessity of universally designed environment to support the elderly. Handrails around bathtub and wash basin, stair slope, electric auto-level controlled kitchen counter and kitchen cabinet were especially perceived for the respondents as very essential design elements to support the aged.
