  • This study researches the mechanical and dyeing properties of wool fabric treated with papain. In this study, shrinkage, water contact angle, alkali solubility, and the dyeability of wool fabric treated with papain at the optimal activity condition were measured to confirm the effect of papain treatment. The shrinkage and water contact angle of wool fabric treated with papain decreased more than the untreated wool; however, the alkali solubility and the dyeability increased. L-cysteine was more active than EDTA as an activator of papain.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between clothing interests in the status symbol and the exhibition need and status inconsistency. The exhibition need was measured by Murray's statements on need and some items selected from The Need Diagnosis Scale of Jaung-Kyu Whang. Status inconsistency was measured by the same criteria of Lenski. Three aspects of clothing interests-the status symbol, the fashion and the exhibitionism-were assessed. The questionnaires were distributed to the housewives in Seoul. Data from 511 respondents were analyzed by correlations and $x^2$-tests. The results were: 1) The exhibition need was positively related to interests in the status symbol and exhibitionism of clothing. 2) Status inconsistency was positively related to clothing interests in the status symbol and fashion. 3) The degree of clothing interests in the status symbol and fashion were also positively related to the clothing expenditure and the socioeconomic status of the sample.

  • The purposes of this study were to identify the most explainable socioeconomic variables influencing clothing selection criteria, and to explore the difference in the clothing seletion criteria among the groups with status inconsistencies. A questionnaire was developed to collect data for clothing selection criteria, and socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status was measured by education and occupation of husband and wife, and family income. Status inconsistency was defined by the inconsistencies among education, income and occupation. Data were obtained from 369 housewives living in Seoul area. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The education of housewives was the most important variable influencing clothing selection criteria. 2) When the subjects were divided into three groups according to their status inconsistency group, there were partially significant differneces among groups in clothing selection criteria. The "overprivileged" status group attached more importance to the fashionability and psychological dependence than the other status group. The "underprivileged" status group attached more importance to the practicality and ecnomy than the other status group. And when the subject were divided into three groups according to their social mobility, there were sgnificant differences among groups in clothing selection criteria.

  • The experiment was undertaken to investigate the optimum condition in the effect of seam balance on seam puckering. Four kinds of fabrics were sewed with three kinds of yarns which were used with a seam balance of 90, 100, 110 and $120\%$. In this experiment, the following conclusions were obtained; The best appearance was achieved by a seam balance of $100\~120\%$ in Cotton fabrics, $100\~110\%$ in Rayon fabrics, $110\~120\%$ in Polyester fabrics and $120\%$ in Wool fabrics after laundering.

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the 1997 economic crisis on Korean households' clothing expenditures at different incom levels. The raw data sets from the Family Income and Expenditure Survey of 1994, 1996, 198, and 2000 produced by the National Statistical Office were used. Based on their income data, subjects were divided into three groups: upper-income (upper 30%), low-income(lower 30%), and middle-income (the 40% in between). The main results are as follows : 1) the income, consumption expenditures (ConE) and clothing expenditures (CloE) of Korean households increased in 1996, decreased in 1998 and recovered in 2000. Although the proportion of ConE to income increased after the economic crisis, CloE/ConE decreased. Clothing expenditures displayed an asymmetric pattern over the economic crisis : the clothing expenditures decreased severely and quickly during the groups. 2) Compared to other household expenditures, clothing expenditure patterns were unique and of clothing categories, the propottion of expenditures for outwear decreased considerably compared to other categories after the economic crisis.

  • Succeeding to Report 1, to compare folded curtain fabrics with curtain fabrics, the sound pressure level (SPL) of folded curtain fabrics were measured by sound level meter. Transmission coefficient was calculated by the ratio of incidence sound intensity and transmission sound intensity. The relationship between these values and factors (drape coefficient, porosity) relating to the structure of curtain fabrics were investigated experimentally. The following results were obtained: 1. The transmission coefficient by ratio of sound pressure level was lower than that by ratio of sound intensity. 2. In folded curtain fabrics, difference of SPL was smaller and transmission coefficient generally decreased. 3. The relation between the porosity and transmission coefficient of curtain fabrics is given as plus correlation.

  • Tile purposes of this study were to find out any significant relations among body image, needs for body modification, self concept, and some selected clothing behaviors of two age group females using social comparison theory as the research background. The sampling method was a convenient sampling, and the subjects were 56 females aged from 20 to 24 years and 54 females aged from 40 to 49 years. The quasi-experiment and survey were conducted from May 1 to June 30, 2002. The results of tile study were as follows. First, the perceptual body image is more important than measured body size and ideal body size in body image. Apart from measurement instrument, people who perceived slim had higher self concept, exhibition and conformity of clothing. Second, there were significant differences between the two age groups(twenties and forties) in needs for plastic modification, self concepts and clothing behaviors. The younger age group exhibited higher need for modification than the older age group and the younger group also showed higher self concept, higher interests in clothing and fashion, more exhibition tendency and conformity to clothing.

  • Eco-friendly processing using enzymes has been focused in textile industry in order to reduce environmental pollutions. This paper was suggested to hydrolyze non-cellulose, such as fats and waxes in cotton fabrics by lipase treatment. Enzymatic treatment conditions were controlled according to pH, temperature, enzyme concentration, and treatment time. The physical properties of the lipase-treated cotton fabrics were evaluated by measuring weight loss, moisture regain and dyeing properties. The surface morphology of lipase-treated cotton fabrics were observed by SEM. As a result, the optimum conditions for the lipase treatment were at pH 4.2, temperature 50$^{\circ}C$, concentration 50%, and treatment time 90 minutes. Calcium chloride and Triton X-100 were effective auxiliaries in lipase treatment.
