Fractures and segmentation in association with the activities of the Yangsan fault are studied around Mt. Namsan, Gyengju city in the southeastern part of Korea. It is believed that the higher values of joint density and fractal dimension with the approach of the center of the Yangsan fault mean intense fracturing due to the fault activity. The boundary between fault damage zone and host rock is inferred to be placed at about 2.7 km from the center of the Yangsan fault where the values of joint density and fractal dimension abruptly decrease and the orientations of joint are also much dispersed. The small faults within the damage zone of the Yangsan fault are definitely divided into right-lateral and left-lateral strike-slip faults. The former is considered to be formed during the right-lateral movement of the Yangsan fault and the latter during the left-lateral movement. The Yangsan fault is segmented in the study area with obvious evidences as follows: (1) the difference of fault strike between northern and southern segments, (2) The geometry of contractional imbricate fans and syncline plunging $9^{\circ}$, $S85^{\circ}E$ at the end of northern segment, and (3) anticline plunging $28^{\circ}$, $N4^{\circ}W$ at the end of southern segment.
Since the key issue that 'the Yangsan fault is seismically an active fault" was raised in 1983, thegeological and geomorphological studies of active fault have been made by many researchers. These studies are mainly focused on the Yangsan fault system(YFS) and Ulsan fault system(UFS) due to many historical earthquakes occurred in this area. There are two different types of active faultings under the ENE-WSW horizontal stress field in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The NNE-trending YFS is the most prominent right-lateral strike-slip fault and has a continuous trace about 200 km long. Some part of this system has been active during the late Quaternary with evidences clearly recognized on both the northern (Yugyeri and Tosung-ri areas) and southern parts (Eonyang to Tongdosa area) of the YFS. in the southern part, the estimated vertical slip rate is about 0.02 - 0.07 mm/yr, and the lateral slip rate may be several times larger than the vertical rate. The most recent event occurred prior to deposition of Holocene alluvium, in the northern part, the fault trend locally changes to almost N-S, dips to the east and has reverse movement. The average vertical slip rate is estimated to be less than 0.1 mm/yr. The most recent event probably occurred after 1314 years BP (AD 536). The NNW-SSE (or N-S) trending UFS is a predominantly reverse fault that built up U-ie eastern mountain and has been active during U-ie late Quaternary. The fault trace is not straight but irregularly undulates along the foot of the mountain on the east. From the disturbed terraces along U-ie fault, the average vertical slip rate on U-iis system is estimated to be about 0.08.13mm/yr. The latest event is not well studied, but seems to have occurred after the last glacial maximum in the Malbang fault and 14,000 years BP in the Kalgok fault of the UFS. However, important issues such as fault segmentation, recurrence interval, age of Quaternary deposits need further studies.
It is a well known fact that the remanent magnetization direction of the Tertiary rocks is deflected significantly clockwise (about $50^{\circ}$) in the Tertiary basins of the southeastern part of Korean peninsula. This fact has been interpreted as an evidence of north-south spreading of the East Sea (Sea of Japan) and dextral strike-slip motion of the Yangsan fault. As deflection (rotation) of remanent magnetizations is frequently reported from various regions of the world in the vicinities of strike-slip fault, such phenomena are to be expected in the Yangsan fault region also. It was the purpose of this study to clarify whether such premise is right or not. A total of 445 independently oriented core samples were collected from Cretaceous rocks of various lithology (sedimentary rocks, andesites and I-type granites) in the Yangsan fault area. In spite of through AF and thermal demagnetization experiments, no sign of remanent magnetization deflection was found. Instead, palaeomagnetic poles calculated from formation-mean ChRM directions are very similar to those of contemporary (Barremian, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary) sedimentary and plutonic rocks in the other parts of $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ basin as well as those of China. Therefore, possibility of tilting of granite plutons and horizontal block rotation of study area is excluded. It is also concluded that the Yangsan fault did not take any significant role in the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of southeast Korea and the East Sea region. The boundary between rotated and unrotated region of remanent magnetization is not the Yangsan fault line, but must lie further east of it.
As a part of study on the structure of the Yangsan Fault, geological and VLF EM studies have been made in the fault area approximately between Kyeongju and Eonyang. The result provides comparatively clear information on the trace of the fault and extent of fracture zone as well as the structural characteristics of the Yangsan Fault area. The location of fault trace identified from this VLF EM study coincides well in general with that expected from geological information of the area. And the extent of fault fracture zone turn out to be characterized by U shaped low resistivity zone whose width increases from north to south.

Deep geological cross-sectional data is generally not common nor easy to construct, because it is expensive and requires a great deal of time. As a result, geological interpretations at depth are limited. Many scientists attempt to construct geological cross-sections at depth using geological surface data and geophysical data. In this paper, we suggest a method for constructing cross-sections from limited geological surface data in a target area. The reason for this study is to construct and interpret geological cros-sections at depth to evaluate heat flow anomaly along the Yangsan fault. The Yangsan Fault passes through the south-eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The cross-section is constructed from Sangbukmyeon to Unchonmyeon passing perpendicularly through the Yangsan Fault System trending NW-SE direction. The geological cross-section is constructed using the following data: (1) Lithologic distributions and main structural elements. (2) Extensity of sedimentary rock and igneous rock, from field mapping. (3) Fault dimension calculated based on geometry of exposed surface rupture, and (4) Seismic and core logging data. The Yangsan Fault System is composed of the Jain fault, Milyang fault, Moryang fault, Yangsan fault, Dongnae fault, and Ingwang fault which strike NNE-SSW. According to field observation, the western section of the Yangsan fault bounded by igneous rocks and in the eastern section sedimentary rocks are dominant. Using surface fault length we infer that the Yangsan Fault System has developed to a depth of kilometers beneath the surface. According to seismic data, sedimentary rocks that are adjacent to the Yangsan fault are thin and getting thicker towards the east of the section. In this study we also suggest a new method to recognize faults using core loggings. This analysis could be used to estimate fault locations at different scales.
We present the K-Ar age dating results of <0.1㎛ fraction of the selected fault rocks from the Yangsan fault in the Yeonghae area. Based on the mineralogical characterization, the <0.1㎛ fractions were mostly composed of 1Md illite polytype, or I-S interstratified mineral, which should be formed by fault activation. Therefore, we determined the timings of fault activation events by analyzing K-Ar age-dating for the <0.1㎛ fractions. Accordingly, the activation timings of Yangsan Fault in the Yeonghae area were determined as 45.5±1.1 Ma, 50.9±1.2 Ma, 58.2±1.3 Ma, 60.8±1.4 Ma, 65.3±1.6 Ma, 66.8±1.5 Ma, 67.1±1.5 Ma, and 75.1±1.7 Ma. These results indicate that at least 5-times of major fault events occurred in the Yangsan fault from late Mesozoic to Cenozoic Era. In the outcrop, age dating results tend to be younger age from the location of the oldest sample(75.1±1.7 Ma) toward to the both sides. From the results, it suggests that the fault activation extends from the location of oldest age saple to both sides. This geochronological research of the multiple fault activation ages for the Yangsan Fault will provide crucial information for establishing the tectonic evolution model in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula.

Yangsan fault in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula has been locally reactivated along a prexisted fault during the late Pleistocene time. Geomorphological evidence of the reactivation is revealed at the northern segment(Yugye-ri, Tosung-ri areas) of the Yangsan fault. The reactivation is distinctively characterized by fault gouge and fracture zone with high frequency in the Yugye-ri area. Obique slip separation of the area is about three meters of the middle terrace. The cumulative vertical displacement is recognized after the formation of the middle terrace. Age of the reactivated faulting is constrained to during the formation of dissected valley deposits. Average vertical slip based on paleo-event is inferred to about 0.5-0.7 meter in this area.
Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in the areas between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong, and between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri, Kyongju in order to investigate the geoelectric structure of the nothren part of the Yangsan Fault. In the area between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong south of Kyongju, the fracture zone east of the inferred fault develops more deeply, without significant north-south variation in depth, than west. In the area between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri north of Kyongju, the fault zone seems to be developed along the Hyungsan-river, and the resistivity structure west of the river is more affected by the fracture zone than east. Interpreted section of dipole-dipole survey conducted in Homyung-ri shows vertical contact of the Yangsan Fault. It appears that the boundary between the northern and central segment of the Yangsan Fault is located in the north of study areas since there is no significant variation in electrical resistivity structure near Kyongju.
To date, several studies have been carried out to partially compare and analyze the resistivity values within the Yangsan fault zone through the electrical resistivity survey of the exposed fault zone. However, it is not easy to directly observe a large scaled fault like Yangsan fault that has been weathered, especially due to the weathering of the fault core. This study aimed to reveal the characteristics of location, geometry, the fault core zone as well as underground distribution of the associated fault damage zone, based on the results of electrical resistivity and micro-topographic surveys as well as field geology survey in the southern Yangsan fault zone (Eonyang area). The resistivity anomaly zones developed in the NNE to NE direction were confirmed by the electrical resistivity survey. According to the electrical resistivity, micro-topographic, and field geologic surveys, the Yangsan fault has been formed by three to five fault cores, fault damage zones and/or fractured zones.
To interpret the movement historv of the Yangsan fault, the paleostresses were analyzed from about 1,000 striated small faults and 330 extension joints which were measured from 37 sites near and along the strike of the Yangsan fault from Yangsan-si, Kyeongsangnam-do to the Shinkwang-myeon, Kyeongsangbuk-do. Six sequential tectonic events have boen established as followings: (I) NW-SE extension, (Il) ENE-WSW compression and NNW-SSE extension, (III) NW-SE compression, (W) ENE-WSW extension, (V) E-W comoression and N-S extension, and (VI) NNE-SSW compression and(VI) NNE-SSWextension. The movement history of the Yangsan fault rnrning in NNE direction were inteepreted based on these six sequential stress fields. The initial feature of the Yangsan fault was formed at the first stage with the development of extension fractures by tectonic event (I) of NW-SE extension. The fault was acted continuously with a right-1ateral strike-slip movement by tectonic event( II) closely related to event( I). The movements had been continued until the Late Miocene. This age was the most active period in faulting. The left-lateral strike-slip movement was followed by subsequent tectonic events (ffi) and (IV). The activity of the Yangsan fault was suspended temporarily by compression of tectonic event (V) which was perpendicular to the strike of the fault. This period might be very short and the magnitude of the tectonic was also small. In the last stage, the fault acted with slight extension or right-lateral moveenent by tectonic event (VI).
