  • This work provides a reliable and classified stocks dataset merged with Saudi stock news. This dataset allows researchers to analyze and better understand the realities, impacts, and relationships between stock news and stock fluctuations. The data were collected from the Saudi stock market via the Corporate News (CN) and Historical Data Stocks (HDS) datasets. As their names suggest, CN contains news, and HDS provides information concerning how stock values change over time. Both datasets cover the period from 2011 to 2019, have 30,098 rows, and have 16 variables-four of which they share and 12 of which differ. Therefore, the combined dataset presented here includes 30,098 published news pieces and information about stock fluctuations across nine years. Stock news polarity has been interpreted in various ways by native Arabic speakers associated with the stock domain. Therefore, this polarity was categorized manually based on Arabic semantics. As the Saudi stock market massively contributes to the international economy, this dataset is essential for stock investors and analyzers. The dataset has been prepared for educational and scientific purposes, motivated by the scarcity of data describing the impact of Saudi stock news on stock activities. It will, therefore, be useful across many sectors, including stock market analytics, data mining, statistics, machine learning, and deep learning. The data evaluation is applied by testing the data distribution of the categories and the sentiment prediction-the data distribution over classes and sentiment prediction accuracy. The results show that the data distribution of the polarity over sectors is considered a balanced distribution. The NB model is developed to evaluate the data quality based on sentiment classification, proving the data reliability by achieving 68% accuracy. So, the data evaluation results ensure dataset reliability, readiness, and high quality for any usage.

  • Advances of telecommunication technology bring various changes in journalism field. Reporters started to gather, edit, and transmit content to main server in media company using hand-held smart media and notebook computer. This paper tried to testify valid bit-rate of visual news content using LTE network and mobile phone. Field news like natural disasters need real-time transmission of video content. But broadcasting company normally use heavy ENG system and transmission satellite trucks. We prepared and experimented different types of visual content that has different bit-rates. Transmission tool was LU-60HD mobile system of LiveU Corporation. Transmission result shows that bit-rate of 2Mbps news content is not suitable for broadcasting and VBR (Variable Bit Rate) transmission has better definition quality than CBR (Constant Bit Rate) method. Three different bit-rate of VBR transmission result shows that 5Mbps clip has better quality than 1Mbps and 3Mbps. The higher bit-rate, the better video quality. But if the content has much movements, that cause delay and abnormal quality of video. So optimizing the balance between stability of signal and quality of bit-rate is crucial factor of real-time broadcasting news gathering business.

  • This study aimed to understand young adults' attitudes concerning news and news resources they consumed, and how they encounter the fake news phenomenon. A qualitative approach was used with semi-structured interviews with 41 young adults (aged 20-30) in Tehran, Iran. Findings revealed that about half of the participants favored social media, and a smaller group used traditional media and only a few maintained that traditional and modern media should be used together. News quality was considered to be lower on social media than in traditional news sources. Furthermore, young adults usually followed the news related to the issues which had impact on their daily life, and they typically tended to share news. To detect fake news, they checked several media to compare the information; and profiteering and attracting audiences' attention were the most important reasons for the existence of fake news. This is the first qualitative study for understanding news consumption behavior of young adults in a politicized society.

  • News contents has been collected, selected, edited and sometimes distorted by the news recommendation mechanisms of online portals in nowadays. Prior studies had not confirmed the consensus of newsworthiness, and they had not tried to empirically validate the impacts of newsworthiness on audience reactions. This study challenged to summarize the concepts of newsworthiness and validate the impact of representativeness of both editor's and audience's perspective on audience reactions as perceived news quality, trust on news portal, perceived usefulness, service satisfaction, loyalty, continuous usage intention, and word-of-mouth intention by adopting the representativeness heuristics method and information adoption model. 357 valid data had been collected using a scenario survey method. Subjects in each groups are exposed by 3 news recommendation mechanisms: 1) the time-priority news exposure mechanism (control group), 2) the reference-score-based news recommendation mechanism (a single treatment group), and 3) the major-news-priority exposure mechanism sorting by the reference scores made by peer audiences (the mixed treatment group). Data had been analyzed by the MANOVA and PLS method. MANOVA results indicate that only mixed method of both editor and audience recommendation mechanisms impacts on perceived news quality and trust. PLS results indicate that perceived news quality and trust could significantly affect on the perceived usefulness, service satisfaction, loyalty, continuance usage, and word-of-mouth intention. This study would contributions to empathize the role of information technology in media industry, to conceptualize the news value in the balanced views of both editors and audiences, and to empirically validate the benefits of news recommendation mechanisms in academy. For practice, the results of this study suggest that online news portals would be better to make mixed news recommendation mechanisms to attract audiences.

  • Purpose The online comments on news content have become social information and are understood based on deliberative democracy. Although the related research has focused on the relationship between online comments and their deliberative quality, the social information provided by online comments consists of not only direct information such as comments themselves but also indirect information such as 'likes' and 'dislikes'. Therefore, the research on online comments and deliberative quality should study this direct and indirect information together, and the direction and the degree of the indirect information should be also considered with them. Design/methodology/approach This study distinguishes comments by the attached 'likes' and 'dislikes', identifies highly supported and highly unsupported comments by the intensity of 'likes' and 'dislikes', and investigates the relationship between their existence and the deliberative quality measured as the topic diversity. Then, we applied topic modeling to the 2,390 news articles and their 74,385 comments collected from five news sites. Findings The topic diversities of the supported and unsupported comments are related to the topic diversity of all comments but the degree of the relationship is higher in the case of supported comments. Furthermore, the existence of highly supported and unsupported comments is led to less diversity of all comments compared to the case where those comments are absent. Particularly, when only highly supported comments are present, topic diversity was lower than in the opposite case.

  • We investigate the effect of comment history disclosure on portal news comments. Specifically, based on the scraped news comments from Naver and Daum (two leading Korean news portals), we employ the difference-in-differences estimator to empirically tease out the impact of the comment history disclosure policy implemented in Naver on its news comments. Our result shows that the policy implementation significantly increased the length and the positiveness of online news comments but did not affect their quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the producing conventions of lifestyle news and search for problems with these conventions. This research is about the entire process of production of lifestyle news, while dividing it into sourcing conventions and editing conventions. With this concept as a goal, we analyzed the content of lifestyle articles over the last six months in two types of daily papers, and then interviewed journalists in-depth. The results of the study indicate that as for sourcing conventions, reporting is accomplished by focusing on a reporter and using anonymous or false-named news sources. These conventions spread widely over not only ideas but also valuation of news items and security of news sources. This is because in terms of lifestyle news that is closely related to one's private life such as family relations, a reporter often attempts to prevent a news source from being exposed to secondary damage, such as the criticism of readers. In the meantime, editing conventions of lifestyle articles are irrelevant in terms of the quality of each media enterprise. Instead, these conventions are connected with the day of publication. Moreover, editors tend to approach editing conventions to spread the culture of upper classes, recognizing that the readers are consumers who have purchasing power.
