  • This study tried to revaluate the Erasure of Japanese National Flag in Dong-A Ilbo. In spite of its historical significance, this event was not explored thoroughly by researchers. While it was known as Chosunjoongang-Ilbo erased the Japanese National Flag earlier than Dong-A Ilbo on August 13 1936, but this study found out that Dong-A Ilbo erased the Japanese National Flag in the local morning edition of the same day. With the victory of Kijeong Son in the Berlin Olympic Marathon the nationalistic coverage of Dong-A Ilbo seemed to be revived. And this change caused the severe suppression by the colonial Japanese government. The government intended to eliminate the influences of Seongsu Kim and Jinwoo Song to make Dong-A Ilbo more cooperative partner. But because the intention of the government was not acceptable to two men, Dong-A Ilbo posed a noncooperative stance. This resulted in the longest suspension over 9 months. Finally with the change of stance to a compromising one, Dong-A Ilbo could be released from the longest suspension on June 3rd, 1937.

As for English newspapers, obituaries from the New York Times and the Guardian were included in the corpus for comparison. First, the structure and composition of obituaries in each language (Korean and English) are compared. Korean obituaries show a pattern of a combination of a death notice and an obituary. Second, distinct features of each newspaper are discussed. The JoongAng Ilbo has its obituary section titled "Life and Memories", and the DongA Ilbo's obituaries are under the heading of "Rest in Peace." Obituaries in the New York Times appear in print on different pages of the paper according to the deceased's field of interest. Following discussion of formal structure and characteristics of each newspaper, Korean and English obituaries will be compared in terms of content and cultural context.

  • Dong-a Ilbo tried to assume leadership of opinion in preceding the movement against the trusteeship as a mouthpiece for the Han-Min Party. Dong-a Ilbo was to try to promote the atmosphere of anti-trusteeship=anti-communism=anti-Soviet Union, distorting the decision of a conference of three foreign affairs ministers in Moscow. It was not an incorrect report, but the false report. As a result, the formula of an anti-trusteeship=anti-Soviet Union=anti-communism=patriotism, and a pro-trusteeship=pro-Soviet Union=pro-Communism=traitor was formed. And the important problems of land reform and pro-Japanese‘ clearance were missing. Historically, political newspapers had appeared in the periods of very important political change. Political newspapers played a role as mouthpiece for political party or group. Dong-a Ilbo was such a political newspaper. It was that Dong-a Ilbo tried to change the social atmosphere in preceding the movement against the trusteeship as a mouthpiece for the Han-Min Party. And history was distorted.

  • In the 1950s, Korea was forced to rely on foreign aid, relief supplies, and contraband because of the Korean War. At the same time, Western culture also flowed into the country rapidly, which is believed to have had a great impact on the Korean clothing culture of the time. It is thought that this trend could be found in magazines and newspapers of the time. In the 1950s, newspapers served as the main channel for information acquisition and dissemination. I would like to analyze this tendency focusing on a newspaper article in the Dong-A Ilbo in the 1950s. According to the article, the hanbok was viewed as an old custom that needed to be improved or old clothes that had to be changed to Western clothes. As a result, the doubles system of both hanbok and Western clothes collapsed, and hanbok changed to an evening or ceremonial dress. From the 1960s, Korean fashion quickly changed to a more western style.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the $Dong-A$ $Ilbo$, a prevailing newspaper in Korea, has constructed 5.18 discourse. In the last thirty years or so in Korea, '5.18(the Gwangju Democratization Movement)', in both academic and social realm, has been one of the most disputed issues in the process of political change. However, little attention has been given to this topic in the field of communication study. Thus, we attempted to illuminate the construction of 5.18 dicourse by using terms analysis and discourse analysis of editorials during the period of May 18, 1980-December 31, 2010. From the study, it is found that the use of terms has changed from 'crisis' through 'resistance', 'slaughter', 'revolt' to 'democratization movement' in the $Dong-A$ $Ilbo$. And it is also found that 5.18 discourse has been developed in the order of 'tragic incident discourse', 'truth investigation discourse', 'rehabilitation discourse', 'deferment discourse', 'punishment discourse', 'political strife discourse' in the editorials of the $Dong-A$ $Ilbo$. These shifts of terms and discourse have been mostly led by socio-political changes. Based on the research results, the central characteristics of 5.18 discourse of the Korean mainstream press were elaborated and the implications of the results were discussed.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed how the four nurse-related news items 'talent show,' 'neonatal death,' 'nurse's death,' and 'sexual harassment' were portrayed in Korean daily newspaper articles. Methods: A total of 392 newspaper articles published from November 2017 to May 2018 were retrieved through the internet homepages of three newspapers, the Chosun Ilbo, the Dong-a Ilbo, and the JoongAng Ilbo and through a database for 13 other newspapers. Articles were analyzed for their views on nurses and their structural and contextual frames. Results: Articles with the highest frequency of mentioning nurses' death appeared in the JoongAng Ilbo; these were written as straight news articles. In the analyzed articles, nurses were portrayed mostly as victims, troublemakers, passive, or selfish. Articles were written mostly in episodic, incident notice, or attribution of responsibility frames. Conclusion: It was not uncommon to read articles with negative views on nurses; most of these articles focused only the four major incidents as straight news type stories. Future efforts are needed to study the implications of newspaper articles with negative views on nurses and the frames most commonly used.

  • As globalization has accelerated, the use of English loanwords is increasing in South Korea. In this paper, we have analyzed news stories from four Korean quality newspapers-Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, KyungHyang Sinmun, and Chung-Ang Ilbo to investigate the usage of English loanwords in news texts. Thirty-eight news stories on life, politics, business and IT were collected from the four newspapers and then analyzed based on the five types of loanwords-Direct, Mixed Code Combination, Clipping and Neologism and Double Notation, partly following Lee's and Rudiger's classification. As a result, the followings were revealed: first, the use of the category Direct was overwhelming the others with 90%, indicating that English loanwords were not translated from its source language and introduced into Korean directly with little modification; second, the use of English loanwords was significantly higher in the sections of business and IT than in other sectors, implying that English loanwords function in a similar way as a lingua franca does within those fields. Furthermore, the linguistic trends can provide a basic guide for translators to make an informed decision between the use of English loanwords and its translated Korean version in English-into Korean translation.
