Mechanical performances of concrete beams with hybrid usage of steel and FRP tension reinforcement

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been recently used to reinforce concrete members in flexure due to their high tensile strength and especially in corrosive environments to improve the durability of concrete structures. However, FRPs have a low modulus of elasticity and a linear elastic behavior up to rupture, thus reinforced concrete (RC) components with such materials would exhibit a less ductility in comparison with steel reinforcement at the similar members. There were several studies showed the behavior of concrete beams with the hybrid combination of steel and FRP longitudinal reinforcement by adopting the experimental and numerical programs. The current study presents a numerical and analytical investigation based on the data of previous researches. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of beams by using ANSYS are built and investigated. In addition, this study also discusses on the design methods for hybrid FRP-steel beams in terms of ultimate moment capacity, load-deflection response, crack width, and ductility. The effects of the reinforcement ratio, concrete compressive strength, arrangement of reinforcement, and the length of FRP bars on the mechanical performance of hybrid beams are considered as a parametric study by means of FE method. The results obtained from this study are compared and verified with the experimental and numerical data of the literature. This study provides insight into the mechanical performances of hybrid FRP-steel RC beams, builds the reliable FE models which can be used to predict the structural behavior of hybrid RC beams, offers a rational design method together with an useful database to evaluate the ductility for concrete beams with the combination of FRP and steel reinforcement, and motivates the further development in the future research by applying parametric study.

The impact of probiotics and vitamin C on the prevention of upper respiratory tract symptoms in two preschool children cohorts

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The efficacy of Lab4 probiotic and vitamin C combination on the prevention of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) was investigated in two studies with children. Our objective was to pool dataset of 57 preschool children from the PROCHILD study (ISRCTN28722693) and the dataset of 50 preschool matched cohort from the PROCHILD-2 study (ISRCTN26587549) to evaluate the impact of probiotic/vitamin C combination on the prevention of upper respiratory tract symptoms and provide a more robust assessment of effect using detailed individual level data. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The children were supplemented daily for 6 months with either the multistrain probiotic (1.25×1010 cfu/tablet consisting of two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus CUL21 and CUL60, Bifidobacterium bifidum CUL20 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CUL34) plus 50 mg vitamin C or a placebo. RESULTS: In the pooled analysis of the individual participant data (per protocol population), significant reductions were observed for the incidence (-25%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66, 0.85; P < 0.0001) and duration (-14.9 days; 95% CI, -24.8, -5.1; P = 0.0030) of typical URTI symptoms in the active group compared with the placebo. The incidence rates of absenteeism from preschool (IR ratio, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.66, 0.86; P < 0.0001), paediatric visits (IR ratio, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.47; 0.68; P < 0.0001) and antibiotic usage (IR ratio, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.39, 0.71; P < 0.0001) were also significantly reduced. CONCLUSION: The pooled analysis findings of comparable preschool cohorts from two studies indicate that the supplementation with probiotic and vitamin C combination is beneficial in the prevention and management of URTI symptoms.

Characteristics and Treatment Methods of Bell's Palsy in Patients Visiting Korean Medicine Hospitals From August 2018 to July 2021

  • Background: This study was designed to statistically analyze the data of patients who had Bell's palsy (BP) who visited a Korean Medicine hospital in the last 3 years to determine the tendency or characteristics of their visit. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 816 patients. Based on the data collected through medical records demographics, condition/disease, and therapeutic characteristics of the patients were analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 23.0. Results: Patients in their teens or younger, and 50s or older had a higher frequency of inpatient treatment, and 20s to 40s had a higher rate of outpatient treatment. The proportion of men who received steroid combination treatment was higher than women. The number of patients with BP, and the total treatment period of the patients has decreased every year. The total treatment period was shorter in the steroid group than the Korean medicine alone group. Inpatients were more likely to receive steroid combination therapy than outpatients. The proportion of patients who received steroid combination therapy was higher than patients with recurrence of BP. Patients with hypertension or diabetes had a higher rate of hospitalization and received more treatments than patients without the condition/disease. Conclusion: Visit characteristics and treatment methods preferred by patients with BP were identified. This research may help to establish a treatment model for BP in Korean Medicine institutions in the future.

밀도검층 이격 보정을 위한 기준선과 이격선의 특성 연구 (A Study on Spine and Rib Properties for Standoff Compensation, Density Log)

  • 밀도가 알려진 4개의 모형시험공에서 이격실험을 하고 얻어진 비이격 및 이격 측정 자료를 분석함으로서 기준선과 이격선의 특성을 파악할 수 있었다. 특히 선원을 출발하여 검출기에 도달하기까지의 감마선 경로의 형태, 기준선과 이격선의 궤적 특성, 궤적에 미치는 밀도 및 검출기 조합의 영향을 추적할 수 있었으며 이격보정을 위한 최적의 검출기 조합까지 확인할 수 있었다. 기준선과 이격선의 기울기 모두 검출기 조합별 긴거리와 짧은거리 간의 선원-검출기 거리비에 비례하는 함수의 형태로 표시될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이 연구는 기준선 및 이격선의 기울기에 대한 기본 개념 이해에도 효과적으로 적용되었다.

성격유형에 따른 복식문양 이미지 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Evaluation of Clothing Pattern Image by the Personality Type)

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the perceptions of Korean female university students for clothing pattern tendency and structural element of clothing pattern image dimension and to find how individual personality type influence the preferred clothing pattern characteristics. For this study, a questionnaire was designed and sent to 600 female university students of Daejeon, Seoul and metropolitan area. The tool used in this study was MBTI(The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) Form G Korean version and for the analysis of data SPSS 10.0 package were used. 10 representative patterns for this study were floral, dot, stripe, check, animal, abstract & artistic, geometric, vegetable & leaf, paisely, patchwork pattern. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, arithmetic mean, One-Way ANOVA, x²-test. The major findings were as follows: Clothing pattern image dimension perceived by Korean female university students for 10 representative patterns were basic form, deluxe, specialty, and cultural dimension. Among them, basic form and deluxe dimension were major dimensions. In basic form dimension, dot pattern score was high indicating female students perceive it as light, comfortable, clean, cool and simple pattern image. In deluxe dimension, floral pattern scored high and in specialty dimension, abstract and artistic pattern scored high among other pattern image. In cultural dimension, geometric pattern and check pattern scored high. Based on other detailed analysis results, It is concluded that the personality type greatly influence clothing pattern evaluation. For example, in case of color combination of patchwork pattern, there was a difference in color preference depend on a personality type such as sensing(S) or intuition(N). Therefore, sensing personality type preferred adjacent color combination than contrast color combination. Detailed marketing strategy is necessary in planning textile design of merchandise plan.

아토피 치료 처방의 본초 활용 분석 (Analysis on the herbal combinations in Korean medicine for atopic dermatitis)

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to search and analyze the herbal combinations in formulas used to treat atopic dermatitis in Korean medicine. Methods : Articles on the atopy were searched for from among those registered on the OASIS up to December, 2015. After the articles were reviewed, information on both internal and external formulas for atopy was constructed. Then, the herbal combination in the formulas was analyzed by using frequency distribution, network analysis, and data mining. Results : The combination of 'Saposhnikovia Radix - Schizonepetae Spica' and 'Scutellariae Radix - Phellodendri Cortex ' was mostly used in both internal and external formulas to treat atopy in articles. By using the network analysis and data mining, twelve combinations including ' (Saposhnikovia Radix, Ponciri Fructus Pericarpium) - (Platycodi Radix, Schizonepetae Spica) ' were discovered. Five effective combinations were also searched for external formulas.Conclusions : This study could help researchers to analyze the formulas in various ways. Moreover, the herbal combination in atopy formulas could be used to search for atopy formulas in other databases or make a new prescription.

엑셀 VBA를 이용한 이분형 로지스틱 회귀모형 교육도구 개발 (An educational tool for binary logistic regression model using Excel VBA)

  • 이분형 로지스틱 회귀분석은 양적 혹은 질적 설명변수를 이용해서 이분형 반응변수를 설명하는 하나의 통계적인 기법이다. 이 모형에서는 반응변수가 1이 될 확률을 설명변수들의 선형결합의 변환(혹은 함수)으로 설명하고자 한다. 이 개념에 대한 이해가 비통계학자들이 이분형 로지스틱 회귀모형을 이해하는데 있어서 넘어야 할 커다란 장벽 중의 하나이다. 이 연구에서는 이분형 로지스틱 회귀모형의 필요성을 엑셀 VBA를 이용하여 설명하는 교육도구를 개발하고자 한다. 반응변수가 1이 될 확률을 설명변수의 선형함수로 모형화 할 때의 문제점과 선형결합에 대한 변환을 통해 이 문제점이 어떻게 해소되는지 보여준다.

  • Sequence data plays an important role in the field of intelligence, especially for industrial control, traffic control and other aspects. Finding abnormal parts in sequence data has long been an application field of AI technology. In this paper, we propose an anomaly detection method for sequence data using a diffusion model. The diffusion model has two major advantages: interpretability derived from rigorous mathematical derivation and unrestricted selection of backbone models. This method uses the diffusion model to predict and reconstruct the sequence data, and then detects the abnormal part by comparing with the real data. This paper successfully verifies the feasibility of the diffusion model in the field of anomaly detection. We use the combination of MLP and diffusion model to generate data and compare the generated data with real data to detect anomalous points.

Cell Cycle Modulation of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 by a Sub-Fraction of Strobilanthes crispus and its Combination with Tamoxifen

  • Background: Cell cycle regulatory proteins are suitable targets for cancer therapeutic development since genetic alterations in many cancers also affect the functions of these molecules. Strobilanthes crispus (S. crispus) is traditionally known for its potential benefits in treating various ailments. We recently reported that an active sub-fraction of S. crispus leaves (SCS) caused caspase-dependent apoptosis of human breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Materials and Methods: Considering the ability of SCS to also promote the activity of the antiestrogen, tamoxifen, we further examined the effect of SCS in modulating cell cycle progression and related proteins in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells alone and in combination with tamoxifen. Expression of cell cycle-related transcripts was analysed based on a previous microarray dataset. Results: SCS significantly caused G1 arrest of both types of cells, similar to tamoxifen and this was associated with modulation of cyclin D1, p21 and p53. In combination with tamoxifen, the anticancer effects involved downregulation of $ER{\alpha}$ protein in MCF-7 cells but appeared independent of an ER-mediated mechanism in MDA-MB-231 cells. Microarray data analysis confirmed the clinical relevance of the proteins studied. Conclusions: The current data suggest that SCS growth inhibitory effects are similar to that of the antiestrogen, tamoxifen, further supporting the previously demonstrated cytotoxic and apoptotic actions of both agents.

감성주거공간디자인을 위한 신소재의 은유적 표현 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Metaphorical Expression Characteristics of New Materials for Emotional Housing Space Design)

  • This study analyzed metaphorical characteristics of composite materials in terms of a visual aspect on a new material that is applicable for housing space. The results are as follows. First, the recent trend of housing space tends to stimulate emotions of residents through visual finishing materials, and for this reason, visual expression of a new material that is applicable to finishing materials plays an important role. Second, convertibleness, association and duplicity were selected as items of metaphorical expressions through the precedent studies. Third, most of combinations of materials were shown different from the existing materials in an expressive characteristic of composite materials through analysis, and application of a technology showed a different visual effect of patterns and textures from the existing materials. This implies that visual expression and directing are being attempted using such technology on finishing materials of housing space with development of digital technologies. Fourth, for metaphorical characteristics of composite material for housing space, combination of various materials and a digital technology were applied on convertibleness. For association, a combination of materials that have each different characteristic associated with the third material, and combination with subsidiary material of optical fiber and a digital technology were appled for duplicity. Data obtained from the results of this study has high efficiency in planning finishing materials for emotional housing space in future, and it will be basic data for a study on development of new finishing materials.
