The purpose of this study was to examine if there are kinematic variables differences between national representative players (NRP) and non national representative players (NNRP) during 500 m inline skate starting motion. Four NRP and six NNRP were recruited for the study. Each subject executed starting motion five times on a $2{\times}12m$ start way in a gymnasium. Kinematic variables were analyzed by the three-dimensional motion analysis system (60Hz). It was hypothesized that there are difference in elapsed time and center of mass acceleration in starting phase between groups since starting phase has been considered important in sprinting. The results showed that the NRP had significantly shorter starting phase time than that of NNRP. 1) An elapsed time in phase P1 of NRP was shorter than that of NNRP, and excellent players have early started their first stroke. 2) Both NRP and NNRP have started at the same spot, and displacement of the center of gravity in starting posture of NRP group was at the front compared to NNRP group. 3) Average step lengths of NRP were longer than those of NNRP, and a step change of NRP was stabler compared to that of NNRP. 4) In a speed change of the center of gravity NRP showed comparatively high speed from P1 to P4.
In this work, casting processes, such as filling and solidification, were simulated in order to accurately predict volume shrinkage defects in large-sized sand gravity casting. Turbulent flow of melted materials and a difference of solidification speed can cause volume shrinkage defects. In order to solve this problem and to understand the phenomenon, a porous filter application was studied. Two different porosities of 10 and 20 p.p.i filters were introduced into the gating system, and in view of the results so far achieved, the defect was dramatically reduced by 22%, compared to that without the use of the filter.

This study investigated the acceleration response and shape change characteristics of a gravity quay wall according to the magnitude of the applied acceleration. The quay wall was defined as a port facility damaged by the Kobe earthquake. Four experimental scenarios were established based on the inclination condition grades, considered to be a significant defect factor in the quay wall. Then, the shaking table test was conducted using scaled-down quay wall models constructed per each scenario. The ground acceleration was gradually increased from the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.1 g to 0.7 g. After each ground acceleration test, acceleration installed on the wall and backfill ground and inclination on the top of the wall were measured to assess the amplification of peak response acceleration and maximum response amplitude and the change in the inclination of the quay wall. This study also analyzed the separation of the quay wall from the backfill and the crack pattern of the backfill ground according to PGA values and inclination condition grades. The result of this study shows that response acceleration could provide a reasonable prediction for the changes in the inclination of the quay wall and the crack generation and propagation on the backfill from a current inclination condition grade.
Squeeze casting process has been used in the field of a commercial manufacturing method, in which metal is enforcedly solidified under pressure enough to prevent the cast defects such as either gas porosity or shrinkage defect. In this paper, to clarify the relationship between applied pressures and macro ${\cdot}$ microstructural behaviors in gravity and direct squeeze casts, specimens were cast by various squeezing pressures during solidification of 7000 series Al wrought alloy in the metal die designed specially. The applied pressures used in this study were 0, 25, 50, and 75 MPa. The microstructural morphologies of squeeze cast were more fine and dense with increasing the applied pressures, because of the greater solidification rate of billet resulting from the applied pressure. A normal segregation phenomenon of an increasing in amount of eutectics towards the center of the billet was observed for squeeze casts, whereas gravity cast showed an inverse segregation phenomenon of an increasing in amount of eutectics towards the edge in the billet. This change in segregation pattern which is normal or inverse is due to a higher radial temperature gradient and reduced time in the semi solid state for squeeze casting.
Bathymetry change due to the 2011 Tohoku (M9.0) earthquake was investigated through satellite altimetry-derived free-air gravity anomalies (SAFAGA) and shipborne measurements. The earthquake occurred at the plate boundaries near the northeastern coast of Japan, where the oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate along deep-sea trench. Data analyzed in this study include SAFAGA from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), shipborne bathymetry (SB) from the U.S. National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth-Science And Technology (JAMSTEC). To estimate the bathymetry change, a reference bathymetry before the earthquake was predicted by gravity-geologic method (GGM) and Smith & Sandwell’s (SAS) method. In comparison with the bathymetry models before the earthquake, GGM bathymetry model generated by a tuning density contrast of 17.04 g/cm3 by downward continuation method was selected because it shows better bathymetry in the short wavelength below about 6 km. From the results, remarkable bathymetry change of about ±50 m was found on the west side of the Japan Trench caused by the earthquake.
This study compares the effects of flow on oil and suspended solids removal efficiencies in circular enhanced gravity plate separator equipped with coalescence medium. Coalescence medium acts to capture rising oil droplets and settling solid particles and assist in the coalescence of oil and coagulation of solid. The circular separator uses an upflow center-feed perforated-pipe distributor as the inlet. The co-current flow is achieved using 4 increasing sizes of frustum, whereas cross flow uses inclined coalescence plates running along the radius of the separator. The different arrangement gave the cross flow separator a higher coalescence plan area per operational volume, minimal and constant travelling distance for the oil droplets and particles, lower retention time, and higher operational flowrate. The cross flow separator exhibited 6.04% and 13.16% higher oil and total suspended solids removal efficiencies as compared to co-current flow.
Oil sands are a mixture of sand, clay, and a high-viscosity petroleum called bitumen. Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is the most viable and environmentally safe recovery technology for extracting bitumen. It extracts the viscosity-lowered bitumen by high pressure, high temperature steam injected into the bitumen reservoir. The steam is produced at the Central Processing Facility (CPF). Typically, more than 90% of the energy consumed in producing bitumen are used to generate the steam. Fuels are employed in the process, which cause economic and environmental problems. This paper explores the retrofit of heat exchanger network to reduce the usage of hot and cold utilities. The hot and cold utilities are reduced respectively 6% and 37.3% which in turn resulted in 5.3% saving of total annual cost by improving the existing heat exchanger network of the CPF.
