  • Patterns abstractly depicting flowing water with Chinese characters such as gong, wan(man), or wang continued endlessly and curved water patterns began appearing on textiles during the Song Dynasty. Though Song curved water patterns encompassed poetic sentiments such as "falling flowers and flowing water," the meaning faded with time, and these patterns were depicted in backgrounds with flowers added to brocade (Geum-sang-cheom-hwa). During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, combinations of diverse patterns, including flowers, butterflies, dragons, and auspicious treasures became fashionable, rather than the gong- and wan-shaped curved water patterns. Likewise, during the Joseon Dynasty, curved water patterns were preferred as background rather than as primary patterns. They were overlaid with flowers and clouds. The overlaid flower patterns included four-season flower patterns (17th-18th centuries), round flower patterns (19th century), and large flower patterns (20th century), which were identical to flower patterns fashionable at the time and arranged at intervals on complex curved water pattern backgrounds. In contrast, simple Ruyi types were more numerous than the four-Ruyi types fashionable at the time with regard to cloud patterns. Added here were Taiji (great ultimate symbol) or crane patterns, thus seeking to depict diverse auspicious Ruyi such as wish fulfillment and longevity.

  • The affricates of the Korean were alveolar sounds in the 15th century. Alveolar sounds have changed to post-alveolar or alveo-palatal sounds since the 18th century, at least in Southern Korean. These days, the advanced articulation of the affricates are observed, especially in the speech of young generations. The aim of this paper is to show the differences of the affricates when they are pronounced in alveo-palatal and in a more advanced position than in alveo-palatal by their cut-off frequencies. We have recorded speeches of freshmen(in their early twenties) at Seoul National University. The result was that the cut-off frequency of the advanced articulation in auditory observations was higher than that of the others. We have found in particular, that women have tendency to advance their place of articulation of the affricates.

  • This thesis attempts to investigate the design of the bracket sets(eave-supporters) of Dapo-style architecture(multiple-bracket architecture) in order to discover the change and the characteristic of the Yon-Hwa-Hyong bracket sets. The external shape of eave-supporters has been evolved as following order: Kyo-Du-Hyong, Soe-Seo-Hyong, Cho-Gak-Soe-Seo-Hyong, and Yon-Hwa-Soe-Seo-Hyong. The internal shape has been developed as following order: Kyo-Du-Hyong. Cho-Gak-Hyong and Yon-Hwa-Hyong. Kyo-Du-Hyong represents the 17th century style and Yon-Hwa-Hyong has been used since the mid 18th century. Cho-Gak-Hyong signifies the transformation in the structural and designing role of column section and middle section and there appears a unified aspect in Yon-Hwa-Hyong. The transformation from Kyo-Du-Hyong towards Yon-Hwa-Hyong suggests that this is an intention of symbolizing the Buddhist teachings inside and outside of the eave-supporters. The purpose of this change establishes the Buddhist land.

  • Architecture and music have reflected many changes occurring in a greater cultural realm. Specially, the concept of time and space formed from relativistic physics becomes the basis of cultural awareness, and a method to understand the world. Therefore, this study aims to suggest the possibility to integrate architecture and music, based on the close relationship between architecture and music of the 20th century focusing on time and space. Resultantly, in this study, interrelationship between architecture and music is elucidated by proving both the spatiality of music and the temporality of architecture, and such possibility to integrate the two realms helps understand the reality.

  • The cycloid curve had been studied by many mathematicians in the period from the 16th century to the 18th century. The results of those studies played important roles in the birth and development of Analytic Geometry, Calculus, and Variational Calculus. In this period mathematicians frequently used the cycloid as an example to apply when they presented their new mathematical methods and ideas. This paper overviews the history of mathematics on the cycloid curve and presents proofs of its important properties.

  • The Chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and mathematician Pierre Simon Laplace, who conducted a collaborative research on heat phenomena, are two of the key figures that represent French scientific community in the late 18th century. They joined hands together to understand heat phenomena that had not been fully explained until that time. They studied heat phenomena based on a heat particle model called 'caloric' and this study further expanded into light, magnetism and electricity, laying groundwork for many other research achievements afterwards. This article goes through their individual researches and looks into the process of their joint research based on the analysis of their publications. Further to these, it emphasizes its continuity with the Laplacian Program, a large-scale research project conducted in the early 19th century. Lastly, this article presents how science can merge with history, and at the same time, introduces the prerequisites for successful convergence research through existing research cases.
