Design of Image Generation System for DCGAN-Based Kids' Book Text

  • For the last few years, smart devices have begun to occupy an essential place in the life of children, by allowing them to access a variety of language activities and books. Various studies are being conducted on using smart devices for education. Our study extracts images and texts from kids' book with smart devices and matches the extracted images and texts to create new images that are not represented in these books. The proposed system will enable the use of smart devices as educational media for children. A deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) is used for generating a new image. Three steps are involved in training DCGAN. Firstly, images with 11 titles and 1,164 images on ImageNet are learned. Secondly, Tesseract, an optical character recognition engine, is used to extract images and text from kids' book and classify the text using a morpheme analyzer. Thirdly, the classified word class is matched with the latent vector of the image. The learned DCGAN creates an image associated with the text.

A Study on Context of Taoism in DaesoonJinri (대순진리의 도가적 배경에 관한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mutual similarities between DaesoonJinri(大巡眞理) and Taoism thought as well as the thought mechanism of DaesoonJinri based on contents of the four tenets of DaesoonJinri (EumYangHapDeok(陰陽合德), SinInJoHwa(神人調化), HaeWonSangSaeng(解冤相生), DoTongJinGyeong(道通眞境)). DaesoonJinri attached a lot of importance to Taoism among traditional thought such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism. This study will check out the clues from the major texts of Taoism. To do this, this study kept an aye on the Taoism texts such as Laozi, Zhuangzi, Taipingjing, etc. The significant implication of this study is only contextual similarities between DaesoonJinri and Taoism Philosophy. Therefore, this study will provide the preliminary data to researcher searching for the directly ideological contact point between DaesoonJinri and Taoism thought.

Meme Analysis using Image Captioning Model and GPT-4

  • We present a new approach to evaluate the generated texts by Large Language Models (LLMs) for meme classification. Analyzing an image with embedded texts, i.e. meme, is challenging, even for existing state-of-the-art computer vision models. By leveraging large image-to-text models, we can extract image descriptions that can be used in other tasks, such as classification. In our methodology, we first generate image captions using BLIP-2 models. Using these captions, we use GPT-4 to evaluate the relationship between the caption and the meme text. The results show that OPT6.7B provides a better rating than other LLMs, suggesting that the proposed method has a potential for meme classification.

Evaluation of Similarity Analysis of Newspaper Article Using Natural Language Processing

  • Comparing text features involves evaluating the "similarity" between texts. It is crucial to use appropriate similarity measures when comparing similarities. This study utilized various techniques to assess the similarities between newspaper articles, including deep learning and a previously proposed method: a combination of Pointwise Mutual Information (PMI) and Word Pair Matching (WPM), denoted as PMI+WPM. For performance comparison, law data from medical research in Japan were utilized as validation data in evaluating the PMI+WPM method. The distribution of similarities in text data varies depending on the evaluation technique and genre, as revealed by the comparative analysis. For newspaper data, non-deep learning methods demonstrated better similarity evaluation accuracy than deep learning methods. Additionally, evaluating similarities in law data is more challenging than in newspaper articles. Despite deep learning being the prevalent method for evaluating textual similarities, this study demonstrates that non-deep learning methods can be effective regarding Japanese-based texts.

  • Various new technologies and aiding instruments are always being introduced for the betterment of the challenged. This project focuses on aiding the mute in expressing their views and ideas in a much efficient and effective manner thereby creating their own place in this world. The proposed system focuses on using various gestures traced into texts which could in turn be transformed into speech. The gesture identification and mapping is performed by the Kinect device, which is found to cost effective and reliable. A suitable text to speech convertor is used to translate the texts generated from Kinect into a speech. The proposed system though cannot be applied to man-to-man conversation owing to the hardware complexities, but could find itself very much of use under addressing environments such as auditoriums, classrooms, etc

Artificial intelligence approach for linking competences in nuclear field

  • Bridging traditional experts' disciplinary boundaries is important for nuclear knowledge management systems. However, expert competences are often described in unstructured texts and require substantial human effort to link related competences across disciplines. The purpose of this research is to develop and evaluate a natural language processing approach, based on Latent Semantic Analysis, to enable the automatic linking of related competences across different disciplines and communities of practice. With datasets of unstructured texts as input training data, our results show that the algorithm can readily identify nuclear domain-specific semantic links between words and concepts. We discuss how our results can be utilized to generate a quantitative network of links between competences across disciplines, thus acting as an enabler for identifying and bridging communities of practice, in nuclear and beyond.

  • This paper examines the complexities and creative opportunities brought about by the transnational circulation of texts specifically in the areas of transmission, consumption, and adaptation. The circulation of texts and along with it creative elements such as generic forms, tropes, and frameworks for consumption form an integral part in the production and advancement of any form of popular culture. In the process of such circulation, adaptation becomes a form of social and political process necessary for domestic palatability. In this paper, I examine how these complexities can be illustrated in the circulation of one emerging popular form in East and Southeast Asia: Boys Love (BL) television and web series. Using the transnational movement of the BL genre from South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines, I examine how the circulation and adaptations are inflected by considerations related to regional geopolitics and domestic issues concerned with the creative praxis of representing gender and sexuality.

Traveling televisual texts: transnational adaptations of "Doctor Foster" into Korea's "The World of the Married" and the Philippines' "The Broken Marriage Vow"

  • Korean dramas, commonly referred to as Koreanovelas or K-Dramas in the Philippines, have significantly influenced and reshaped Philippine television culture since the early 2000s. Their impact persists in contemporary television programming, reflecting the transnational flow of media texts across borders. As media content transcends geographical boundaries, local media companies have adopted the practice of producing adaptations of foreign television series for their audiences. This paper examines the adaptation of the Koreanovela The World of the Married into the Philippine series The Broken Marriage Vow, both of which are adaptations derived from the British show Doctor Foster. Through this comparative analysis, I argue that the process of localizing these television shows to suit the preferences of the target audience serves as a tangible manifestation of transnational adaptation. Particularly in an era of globalization, where entertainment is still a thriving enterprise, thus traversing international borders, this phenomenon demonstrates the evolving nature of television content as it adapts and caters to diverse cultural contexts let alone a profitable means to generate an ailing entertainment industry, especially in the time of the pandemic.

Effects of Text Types and Working Memory on Text Comprehension in Reading Normal and Reading Deficient Children (텍스트 유형과 작업기억이 읽기 정상 아동과 읽기 지진 아동의 텍스트 이해에 미치는 영향)

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of verbal working memory and the spatial working memory on children's text comprehension. The reading span and the operation span of the reading deficient children were smaller than that of the reading normal children, but the two groups did not differ in the visual span. Reading deficient children got lower score in the comprehension tests than reading normal children, and the difference was larger for the expository text than the narrative text. The involvement of visual working memory in reading narrative texts were more directly tested in Experiment 2 by asking the children do a secondary memory task before they answered the comprehension test. Reading normal children suffered more under auditory secondary memory condition for both narrative and expository texts, whereas reading deficient children suffered under visual secondary memory condition for narrative texts as well. The results of the two experiments suggested that the spatial working memory can be involved in text comprehension process, especially with reading deficient children.
