  • The interaction of para-halogenated benzoic acid isomers with the micellar system of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of benzoic acid isomers into the micellar system of TTAB and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from those measurement. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^{\circ}{_s}$ for the solubilization of all isomers are negative and the values of ${\Delta}H^{\circ}{_s}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}{_s}$ are all positive within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of benzoic acid isomers have been also measured. There was a great decrease on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of each isomers in the TTAB micellar system are the surface or the palisade region of the micelle.

  • The interaction of monochlorophenol isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of monochlorophenol isomers into this micellar system have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^{\circ}_s$, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_s$, and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}_s$) have been calculated and analyzed from the dependence of $K_s$ values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^{\circ}_s$ and ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_s$ are all negative but the values of ${\Delta}S^{\circ}_s$ are all positive for the solubilizations of all isomers within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of monochlorophenol isomers by the same surfactant system have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate the solubilization sites of each isomer in the micellar system of TTAB.

  • A convenient synthetic route has been developed to synthesize 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl) methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-sustituted phenyl)pyrazolines (5a-f) and 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-substituted phenyl)isoxazolines (6a-f) starting from 2-phenyl-4-chloromethylthiazole (1). The chloromethylthiazole (1) was first condensed with 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde (2) for obtaining 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3). Claisen-Smidth condensation of 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3) and acetophenones has been carried in alkaline alcohol and obtained 3-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-1-(4-substituted phenyl)prop-2-en-1-ones (4a-f). The cyclocondensation of 2-propen-1-ones has been first time carried separately with hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in aqueous micellar tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) medium for getting the titled heterocycles with good to excellent yields.

  • The interaction of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers into the TTAB micellar system and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from those measurements. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o{_s}$ for the solubilization of all the isomers are negative and the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_s}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_s}$ are all positive within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of 4-alkylbenzoic acids are the core or deep palisade region of the TTAB micelle.

  • The critical micelle concentration $(CMC^{\ast})$ and the counterion binding constant (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB) were determined at $25^{\circ}C$ as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall molc fraction of DPC) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters $(X_{i},\;{\gamma}_{I},\;C_{i},\;a^{M}_{i}, \beta,\;{\Delta}H_{mix}, \;and\; {\Delta}G^{o}_{m})$ for the micellization of DPC/DTAB, DPC/TTAB, and DPC/CDEAB mixtures were calculated and analyzed for each system by means of the equations derived from the pseudophase separation model. The results show that the DPC/DTAB mixed system has the greatest deviation and the DPC/CDEAB mixed system has the smallest deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model.

  • Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 was grown in BHIB medium supplemented with $Mn^{2+}$ for 96 h at $37^{\circ}C$ in a shaker incubator. After removing the microbial biomass, a lipopeptide biosurfactant was extracted from the supernatant. Its structure was established by chemical and spectroscopy methods. The structure was confirmed by physical properties, such as Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HLB), surface activity and erythrocyte hemolytic capacity. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) and erythrocyte hemolytic capacity of the biosurfactant were compared to those of surfactants such as SDS, BC (benzalkonium chloride), TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) and HTAB (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide). The maximum hemolytic effect for all surfactants mentioned was observed at concentrations above cmc. The maximum hemolytic effect of synthetic surfactants was more than that of the biosurfactant produced by B. subtilis ATCC 6633. Therefore, biosurfactant would be considered a suitable surface-active agent due to low toxicity to the membrane.

  • The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the counter ion binding constants (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) with Polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether (Brij 35) in water were determined as a function of α1 (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method from 15 oC to 35 oC. Values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔGom, ΔHom, and ΔSom) for the micellization of TTAB/Brij 35 mixtures were calculated and analyzed from the temperature dependence of CMC values. The results say that the measured values of ΔGom are all negative at the whole measured condition but the values of ΔSom and ΔHom are positive or negative, depending on the measured temperature and α1.

  • The interaction of benzenesulfonate anion and its derivatives ($C_6H_5SO_3^-, p-$CH_3C_6H_4SO_3^-, and $p-C_2H_5C_6H_4SO_3^-$) with the micellar system of cationic surfactant TTAB(tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants($K_s$) of benzenesulfonate anions into the micellar phase of this surfactant have been measured with the change of temperature. The effects of additives(n-pentanol and NaBr) on the solubilization of benzenesulfonate anions by this surfactant system have been also measured. There was a great decrease on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives so that the measured values of ln$K_s$ were linear relationships with the values of lnCMC. For the thermodynamic study, various thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}G^0_s$, ${\Delta}H^0_s$ and ${\Delta}S^0_s$) have been calculated and analyzed from the dependence of Ks values on temperature.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counterion binding constant (${\beta}$) at the CMC of the mixtures of Dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) and Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) have been determined from the concentration dependence of electrical conductance at various temperatures from $4^{\circ}C$ to $36^{\circ}C$. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}C_p$, ${\Delta}G^o_m$, ${\Delta}H^o_m$ and ${\Delta}S^o_m$), associated with the micelle formation of DPC/TTAB mixtures, have been estimated from the temperature dependence of CMC and ${\beta}$values. The measured values of ${\Delta}C_p$ and ${\Delta}G^o_m$ are negative but the values of ${\Delta}S^o_m$ are positive in the whole measured temperature region. The values of ${\Delta}H^o_m$ are positive at low temperature region and negative at high temperature region. The results show that all of the thermodynamic parameters are dependent on temperature and mole fraction of DPC(${\alpha}_DPC$).

  • The micellization of TTAB(tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) and the solubilization of 4-halogenated phenol isomers in aqueous solution of that surfactant in water have been studied by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. Those properties in aqueous solutions of NaCl and n-butanol have been also measured to determine the interactions between the micelle and 4-halogenated phenols and the solubilized sites of those molecules in the micelle. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o_m$ and ${\Delta}G^o_s$ are all negative and the trends of those values depend on both the kinds and the concentrations of additives. Namely, by adding NaCl both ${\Delta}G^o_m$ and ${\Delta}G^o_s$ values are all decreasing, but by adding n-butanol the ${\Delta}G^o_m$ value decreases and the ${\Delta}G^o_s$ value increases.
