Reliability Updates of Driven Piles Based on Bayesian Theory Using Proof Pile Load Test Results (베이지안 이론을 이용한 타입강관말뚝의 신뢰성 평가)

  • For the development of load and resistance factor design, reliability analysis is required to calibrate resistance factors in the framework of reliability theory. The distribution of measured-to-predicted pile resistance ratio was obrained based on only the results of load tests conducted to failure for the assessment of uncertainty regarding pile resistance and used in the conventional reliability analysis. In other words, successful pile load test (piles resisted twice their design loads without failure) results were discarded, and therefore, were not reflected in the reliability analysis. In this paper, a new systematic method based on Bayesian theory is used to update reliability indices of driven steel pipe piles by adding more proof pile load test results, even not conducted to failure, to the prior distribution of pile resistance ratio. Fifty seven static pile load tests performed to failure in Korea were compiled for the construction of prior distribution of pile resistance ratio. The empirical method proposed by Meyerhof is used to calculate the predicted pile resistance. Reliability analyses were performed using the updated distribution of pile resistance ratio. The challenge of this study is that the distribution updates of pile resistance ratio are possible using the load test results even not conducted to failure, and that Bayesian updates are most effective when limited data are available for reliability analysis.

2D Numerical Simulation of a Dynamic Centrifuge Test for a Pile-Supported Structure (2차원 수치해석을 이용한 말뚝 지지구조물의 동적 원심모형실험 거동 모사)

  • Recently, as the seismic performance based design methods have been introduced, dynamic numerical analyses need to be performed to evaluate the actual performance of structures under earthquakes. The verification of the numerical modeling is the most important for the performance based design. Therefore, 2-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to simulate the seismic behavior of a pile-supported structure, to provide the proper numerical modeling and to determine of input parameters. A dynamic centrifuge test of a pile group in dry loose sand was simulated to verify the applicability of the numerical model. The numerical modeling was carefully made to reflect the actual condition of the centrifuge test including dynamic soil properties, soil-pile interaction, boundary condition, the modeling of the group pile and structure and so on. The predicted behavior of the numerical analyses successfully simulated the acceleration variation in ground, the moment and displacement of the pile, and the displacement and acceleration of the structure. Therefore, the adopted numerical modeling and the input parameters can be used to evaluate the seismic performance of pile groups.

Effects of Pile Diameter on the Plugging Rate and Bearing Capacity of Open -Ended Piles (말뚝직경이 재단말뚝의 폐색정도와 지지력에 미치는 영향)

  • Model pile tests, using a calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study the effects of pile diameter on the plugging rate and bearing capacity of open-ended pile. The model piles used in the test series were devised so that the bearing capacity of an open-ended pile could be measured out into three components. The test results showed that fully plugging depth of an open -ended pile increased with increase in pile diameter and soil density. Moreover, it was found that unit plug capacity decreased with increase in pile diameter, though the penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles was constant. However, the existing formulae for estimation of plug capacity give plug capacity which is constant or increased with increase in pile diameter, when penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles is equal. Thus, it is proposed that the effect of pile diameter as well as plugging rate on bearing capacity of pile must be considered in plug capacity estimation.

Design Efficiency Improvement Method Research for High Strength Steel Pipe Pile at Gwangyang Area (광양지역 고강도 강관 항타말뚝의 설계효율 향상 방안 연구)

  • Various pile load tests were carried out at Gwangyang district for 10 different piles in order to analyze the characteristcs of steel pile using high strength steel and high driving energy. Pile drivability results showed that PHC piles needed highest total blow count even with the shortest pile length and high strength steel pipe piles showed smallest total blow count eventhough driven to a more hard ground condition with longer pile length. Pile dynamic analysis results showed that for PHC pile and general steel pipe pile the allowable pile design load was decided by the allowable material strength but for high strength steel pipe pile the design load can be decided according to the ground bearing capacity. Static load test and load transfer test results showed that the pile design efficiency could be improved over 80% allowing lesser number of piles necessary for a more economical solution. Set-up effects was analyzed and regression equation for the site ground condition was derived. Bearing capacity was checked with widely used design equation and the limitation of current design method and future technology development on this subject is dicussed in this paper.

  • Many economical and efficient methods such as sand drain method(SD), plastic board drain(PBD), sand compaction pile, vacuum consolidation method, etc., have been used for soft grounds. The case of sand compaction pile has an effect on accelerating consolidation and increasing bearing capacity by penetration at regular intervals under soft grounds for reducing the drainage path. But, this method has caused not only the nature damage by extracting the sands indiscreetly but also the economical problem for importing the sands because it needs so much sand to make the sand compaction pile. Thus, this study choosed the bottom ash which has similar engineering characteristics with sand. It was performed that clogging test and large direct shear test changing the bottom ash replacement ratio in soft ground for studying strength characteristics of soft ground using bottom ash compaction pile. As a result of the test, the internal friction angle was largely increased and the cohesion was decreased as the replacement ratio increased.

Lateral Resistance Analysis of Single Pile Using Strain Wedge Model in Sand (모래지반에서 쐐기모델을 이용한 단독말뚝의 수평저항력 해석)

  • The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The results of this equation is compared with results of model test, field test, p-y curve and other methods. It is found that the result of proposed equation is smaller than the result of model test. The results of loading test considerably coincide with those of proposed equation; however, a few of deviations are generated as the displacement of pile head increases. Moreover, coincidences exist between the results of the proposed equation and those of finite difference method.

Utilization of Waste Concrete as Vertical Drain Material (연직배수재료로 폐콘크리트 활용에 관한 기초연구)

  • This paper presents the utilization of waste concrete as vertical drain material. The materials used as vertical drain material were the waste concrete, obtained from the demolished apartments or concrete structure and sand. In this study, laboratory model test was performed to investigate settlement and bearing capacity between sand compaction pile and waste concrete compaction pile. The results of laboratory model test showed that the improvement efficiency of soft ground by waste concrete compaction pile was better than sand compaction pile.

Evaluation of Skin Friction Using Tensile Load Testing of CPR Piles (CPR 말뚝의 인발재하시험을 통한 주면마찰력 평가)

  • Pull-out load tests were performed on a CPR (Compaction grouting compound Pile with Reinforce) test pile, with skin friction being evaluated by the yield load and allowable bearing capacity after analyzing load-displacement curves and load-settlement curves. Results of the CPR test piles analyzed from the load-displacement curves show that the yield load and allowable bearing capacity of the large-diameter CPR test pile were about 1.4 times larger than that of the small-diameter pile. Results of the load-settlement curves reveal that the allowable bearing capacity of the CPR test pile with diameter of D500 was 1.2~2.1 times greater than that of the pile with diameter of D400. However, the allowable bearing capacity calculated using Fuller's analysis differed substantially from that determined using the P (Pull-out load) - S (Settlement) and log P - log S curves. Therefore, calculation of the allowable bearing capacity using Fuller's analysis is shown to be inappropriate.

  • In this study, the economic pile design procedure using the proof test results was proposed. In order to improve the inappropriate pile design routine, the proof test for 6 pile cases were performed and the construction saving effect were analyzed. The saving rate of construction cost with the small diameter piles and the large diameter drilled shafts were 34 - 47 and 0 - 55 %, respectively.

  • The in-pile Section (IPS) is subjected to flow-induced vibration(FIV) due to the flow of the primary coolant and then the structural integrity. The in-pile Section (IPS) of 3-pin Fuel Test Loop(FTL) shall be installed in the vortical hole call IR1 of HANARO reactor core. In order to verify the velocity and displacement both the inside region of IPS at the annular region of IPS, the vibration was measured by varing the flow rate on both regions. The displacements of fuel assembly in the in-pile Section (IPS) were found to be lower than the values of allowable design criteria.
