Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to assess the transition shock experienced by newly graduated nurses, and test the validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: The initial items were identified through a review of literature and in-depth interviews with nine newly graduated nurses. Content validation of the items was evaluated by five nurse professors and three nurses. Participants were 269 newly graduated nurses who worked at six acute care hospitals in Busan, Ulsan, and Yangsan, South Korea. Data were analyzed using item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, criterion related validity, and internal consistency. Results: The final scale consisted of 18 items and six factors (conflict between theory and practice, overwhelming workload, loss of social support, shrinking relationship with co-workers, confusion in professional nursing values, and incongruity in work and personal life), which explained 71.3% of the total variance. The six subscale model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach's alpha for the total items was. 89. Convergent validity was evaluated by analyzing total correlation with burnout (r=.71, p<.001) and turnover intention (t=5.84, p<.001). Conclusion: This scale can be used in the development of nursing interventions to reduce the transition shock experienced by newly graduated nurses.
ln this study, we analyzed 5 science textbooks currently used for the 7th graders quantitatively by using the science textbook rating system of Collette and Chiappetta(1986), making meta-analysis of the results of 17 graduate school students of Seoul National University. The rating system consists of 11 categories with detailed items respectively : content, organization, reading level, instruction approach, illustrations, end-chapter teaching aids, laboratory activities in text and/or accompanying manual, teacher aids, indices and glossaries and mechanical makeup of text. Each item in the checklist is to be given between one and five points and the total number of possible points in this rating system is 290. It was shown that 5 science textbooks currently used for 7th-year-students were all "poor" in terms of total points and had, at large, uniformed results especially in 10 items; 7 items concerning moral and ethical implications of science, vocabulary lists, accompanying laboratory manual, annotated editions for test, supply list for laboratory program, student workbook and glossary with low points, while 3 items concerning facilities needed for laboratory activities, activities relevant to the content and textbook size with high points. A Science teachers could get a broad view with a correct impression of the books usefulness in making an evaluation of available textbooks.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the somatotype variation & satisfaction with the fit of ready-to-wear for overweight women. For this study, questionnaires were administered to 154 overweight women in Andong & Daegu areas. Employing a sample of 116 data were analyzed by using F-test. And 10 overweight women's brands were analyzed for sizing system of women's ready-to-wear. Chiefly view program was about apparel and fashion items. The reason why they watched the home-shopping channel was to purchase more cheaper items. 2. Favor about Cable TV home-shopping was relatively affirmative, but purchasing intention through home-shopping was still negative. But affirmative response was gradually increasing a few years ago. 3. Purchasing experience through Cable TV home shopping was 61.0% and clothing purchaser within recently 6 months was 28.5% of total sample. Withspreading Cable TV widely; Cable TV home shopper was gradually increasing. Heavy purchasing items through Cable TV home-shopping were under-wear; muffler, shawl, because those items are standardized in size and style. When home shopping user made purchasing decision, the most significant factors were color; and size (fit), price in order of importance.
Purpose: The purpose was to develop a preliminary scale to measure Korean adolescents' health behaviors through a qualitative approach, to evaluate the scale psychometrically, and to develop a final scale. Methods: Participants were 61 adolescents for qualitative interviews and 1,687 adolescents for the psychometric evaluation. Procedure included content analysis of interviews to identify health behavior categories for Korean adolescents, pre-test to confirm that preliminary scale items were understandable, content validity by an expert panel, development of the web-based computer-assisted survey (CAS), and psychometric analysis to determine reliability and validity of the final scale. Results: A final scale was developed for both paper-and-pencil and CAS. It consisted of 14 health behaviors (72 items), including stress and mental health (10), sleep habits (5), dietary habits (12), weight control (4), physical activity (4), hygiene habits (5), tobacco use (5), substance use (2), alcohol consumption (4), safety (4), sexual behavior (9), computer use (3), health screening (4), and posture (1). Conclusion: The scale's strong points are: 1) Two thirds of the final scale items are Likert scale items, enabling calculation of a health behavior score. 2) The scale is appropriate to Korean culture. 3) The scale focuses on concrete health behaviors, not abstract concepts.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the gap between importance and performance in perceived sanitation management for general hospital foodservice operations. Data were collected through surveys given to 168 hospital dietitians in the Seoul-Incheon, Gyeonggi-do, Daegu, and North Gyeongsang province. The 65 questionnaires from total questionnaires were usable and the response rate was 38.7%. All statistical analyses were conducted using the SPSS package program (version 20.0) for t-test, ANOVA, and importance-performance analysis (IPA). According to the importance and performance analysis for 26 items, the importance score was significantly higher than the performance score for 22 items. In addition, the results of IPA showed the following areas as improvement priorities: handling foods on working table and management of distribution temperature. In conclusion, the performance level of prerequisite programs applying to the hospital foodservice needs improvement, especially cross-contamination prevention and temperature control for distribution. Additionally dietitians should be educated about sanitation management items that perceived to be less important than the others.
Purpose: This study attempted to develop a scale that measures the level of patients' recognition of the nurses' care, based on Watson's caring theory, and confirmed its reliability and validity. Methods: The items were developed through a literature review and an expert content validity test. The questionnaires were administered to 285 inpatients of internal medicine and surgical units at two general hospitals. Construct validity was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha. Results: This process resulted in a preliminary scale composed of 34 items; We used item analysis and five exploratory factor analyses, and consequently selected 14 items composed of three factors (respect, genuineness, and relationality). The confirmatory factor analysis verified the model fit and convergent and discriminant validity of the final items; criterion validity was confirmed with the positive correlation with the measurement scale of the patient-perceived quality of nursing. The overall scale reliability had a Cronbach's alpha of .92, which indicated internal consistency and reliability. Conclusion: The developed scale showed content, construct, and criterion validity, and reliability, as well as convergent validity for each item and discriminant validity between the factors. This makes it suitable for use in a diverse range of future studies on nurse communication using structural equation models.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop an instrument to showcase Dignity in Care of Terminally Ill Patients for Nurses and to examine its validity and reliability. Methods: A total of 58 preliminary items on dignity in care of terminally ill patients for nurses were selected using content validity analysis and expert opinions on 97 candidate items derived through a literature review and qualitative focus group interviews. Questionnaires were administered to 502 nurses caring for terminally ill cancer patients at hospice and palliative care institutions. The data were analyzed using item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, convergent and discriminant validity, and Pearson correlation for criterion validity, reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha. Results: The final instrument consisted of 25 items, with four factors identified through confirmatory factor analysis. Four factors-ethical values and moral attitudes, interaction-based communication, maintaining comfort, professional insight and competence-accounted for 61.8% of the total variance. Cronbach's α for total items was .96, and test-retest reliability of intraclass correlation coefficient was .90. Conclusion: Since its validity and reliability have been verified through various methods, the Dignity in Care Scale of Terminally Ill Patients for Nurses can be used for develop nursing interventions and improve dignity in care of terminally ill patients.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop and test a reward scale for hospital nurses. Methods: The initial items were identified through a literature review and focus group interviews with ten hospital nurses. The content validity of the items was evaluated by ten experts. Fifty-one items were derived from the pilot survey. Four hundred eighty-eight nurses participated in the study: 248 for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and 240 confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Data were analyzed using item analysis, EFA, CFA, convergent validity, known-group validity, and internal consistency using IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 and IBM SPSS AMOS 29.0. Results: The final scale consisted of 31 items and eight factors (decent wage, opportunity to grow and develop, support for special situations, various benefits, flexibility of work, job-related achievement, reflecting career and performance, and recognition), which explained 67.3% of the total variance. The eight-subscale model was validated by CFA. Convergent validity was evaluated by analyzing correlation with intention to leave (r = - .63, p < .001) and job satisfaction (r = .54, p < .001). The known-group validity was evaluated by comparing the reward scales according to age, clinical career, income level and hospital type. The scale was found to be reliable with a Cronbach's α of .89. Conclusion: Both the validity and reliability of the reward scale for hospital nurses are verified, which can enhance the understanding of the range of rewards and may assist nurse managers in establishing an effective reward system.
