  • The structural wooden members of the ancient building are deteriorated by fungi and termite over time. The deteriorate of the members causes the decrease of the specific gravity and the strength of it, so the stability of the building is threatened. Therefore, in this study, the evaluation of the specific gravity, which is correlated with the strength of the wood, was conducted in the post member using Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) - Drilling Resistance Test (DRT). For the purpose of it, the specific gravity and drilling resistance of small specimens was measured to obtain the correlation between the specific gravity and the drilling resistance. And then, the drilling resistance test of the post members, which were expected to have the deteriorated parts, was performed. Consequently, the correlation between the specific gravity and the drilling resistance was very high ($R^2=0.89$) and the distributions of the specific gravity were evaluated for the each member. Also, the results were verified by the visual inspection of the cross section of it. Especially, the various variations of the wood member such as the deteriorated parts with termite or fungi and the crack could be detected exactly but the knot couldn't because the drill could pass by or could not penetrate the knot.

  • So far,in deep drilling process there are several manufacturing problems such as hole deviation, hole over size, circularity, straightness and surface roughness. Whit regard to these problems, we atudied the abrasion process on carbided tip of BTA drill and got the follow test results through the abrasion characteristic test and analysis on cutting mechanism for the drill tooth and guide pad. 1) In SM55C drilling process, the most stable and reasonable drilling speed range for optmum abrasion characteristic of drill tooth was 60m.min. 2) The total drilling torque was about 60kg .deg.cm on condition drilling speed 60m/min and 0.15mm/rev. These results show that the theoretical burnising torque is well accord with the tested torque which is working on guide pad.

  • Bottom hole assembly(BHA) is a key component of the drilling system, consisting of various components and tools(including the drill bit and mud motor) which operate at the bottom of the wellbore and physically drill the rock. This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of the mud motor which is a drilling propulsion tool. And computational structural analysis is performed to calculate the von-Mises stress and the safety factor of components constituting the mud motor. In this process, the field test data of onshore drilling are used for analysis.

  • The density and strength of wood is affected by degradations and defects, such as voids and knots. Old wooden structures such as traditional cultural properties have been deteriorated by these types of defects. They were evaluated by a visual observation that is difficult to evaluate the inner deterioration in structures. In this study, three nondestructive testing techniques were investigated to detect the wooden structural members. Ultrasonic stress wave tests, drilling resistance tests and visual inspections were used to examine the structural wood members. Patterns of Resistograph using by drilling resistance tests could indicate the features of internal wood such as voids, knots, decay, fungi, and so on. The technique just like as ultrasonic stress wave tests, however, difficult to detect exactly area where small amounts of internal deterioration in logs are. In spite of results of ultrasonic stress wave test, the internal deterioration of wooden structural members could be evaluated by the relationship between ultrasonic stress wave tests and drilling resistance tests.

  • When evaluating the general subgrade states such as geology, stiffness, underground water, compaction and deformation in the Gyeongbu high speed railway, some applicable testing methods should be selected because lots of trains are currently running. The applicable methods includes not only non-destructive tests such as GPR test, electricity resistivity test, MASW proving, but also standard penetration test (SPT), core test, elastic wave tomography through drilling boreholes and measurements using settlement measuring system or inclinometer, etc. In order for evaluating the subgrade states in the Gyeongbu high speed ralway, this study performed GPR test in several sections and drilling boreholes whose locations were chosen after comparing GPR test results and track maintenance history. Furthermore, the progress of subgrade deformations was analysed by comparing previous and this time GPR test results. The results of this study shall be used to understand the general states of currently operating Gyeongbu high speed railway.

  • To develop a new nuclear fuel, it needs to make a test fuel rod and carry out burn-up test in the test loop of a research reactor to check the irradiation characteristics of the nuclear fuel. At that time, several sensors such as thermocouples, LVDTs and SPNDs are needed to be attached in and out of the fuel rod and connect them with instrumentation cables. Then, the instrumentation cables deliver the signals measured by the sensors to the measuring device located outside of the reactor pool. In particular, to install a thermocouple in a fuel rod, it needs to drill off holes on the alumina blocks and sintered $UO_2$ pellets. However, because the hardness of a sintered $UO_2$ pellet is 700 Hv (or HRC 61) and that of an alumina block is 1480 Hv, a special drilling machine which adapts a diamond coated drill bit had developed. In this study, several case experiments have been carried out to find an optimal drilling condition of the drilling machine. And, using the optimal drilling condition, minimum numbers of the holes that a drill bit can drill off are verified.

  • Recently, the trends toward reduction in size and weight of industrial products increased the application of micro hole for manufacturing gadgets of high precision and gave rise to a great deal of interest for micro hole drilling M/C. Quite a few research work is performed on micro drilling on domestic basis compared with the tendency of analyzing cutting mechanism, adaptive control, monitoring of generally available drills of diameter greater than 1mm. This study adresses the design, manufacturing and controlling a micro hole drilling M/C with the overload detection instrument and the step feed mechanism. Controlling and monitoring of the drilling process are acomplished on PC basis for more user interfaces and effectiveness. The test machine of the results of this research shows a good foundation for extending further micro hole machining technique.

  • Objectives: In this study we evaluated heat generation during the low-speed drilling procedure without irrigation. Materials and Methods: Ten artificial bone blocks that were similar to human D1 bone were used in this study. The baseline temperature was $37.0^{\circ}C$. We drilled into 5 artificial bone blocks 60 times at the speed of 50 rpm without irrigation. As a control group, we drilled into an additional 5 artificial bone blocks 60 times at the speed of 1,500 rpm with irrigation. The temperature changes during diameter 2 mm drilling were measured using thermocouples. Results: The mean maximum temperatures during drilling were $40.9^{\circ}C$ in the test group and $39.7^{\circ}C$ in the control group. Even though a statistically significant difference existed between the two groups, the low-speed drilling did not produce overheating. Conclusion: These findings suggest that low-speed drilling without irrigation may not lead to overheating during drilling.

  • Ground drilling is a common method to conduct site investigation, soil improvement, and pile installation. In the point of construction ground drilling requires electrical energy to drill a hole in ground in which the energy exerts into the motor located on the head of auger and generates rotational power. In this paper it is verified that the exerted electrical energy is closely related to the strength characteristics of ground. Measurement sensors, recording system, and drilling system were developed to obtain exerted motor current and drilling depth and laboratory soil box tests were carried out. The measured motor current and boring depth were applied to predict SPT N-value and the prediction results were compared to SPT N-value of laboratory tests. The test results show that the exerted electrical energy to bore ground be a good index to estimate SPT N-value.

  • The main objectives of this research are to experimently explain the drilling mechanism for the production of bad holes and good holes during the drilling operation, to investigate how a wide range of drilling parameter affect composite laminate strength reduction, and to find which type of test provides the greatest interrogation of notched composite laminates. To achieve these objectives, a bulk of test specimens have been drilled with 5 different drilling parameters and tested with compressive, tensile, and flexural loads. It was found that the drilling parameters had a measurable effect on specimen hole quality as measured by static strength. The specimens, which were well supported, which had the higher spindle speed and lower feed rate, and which were well clamped gave the best hole qualities. The flexural test results presented the most clear and consistent failure strengths relating to the drilling parameters and associated hole quality.
