A Design of Adaptive Equalizer for Terrestrial Digital Television Receivers (지상파 디지털 TV 수신기의 적응등화기 설계)

  • This paper describes a structure of adaptive equalizer to improve reception performance of ATSC digital television (DTV) for 8-VSB receivers. There are many strong and dynamic echoes affecting reliable reception of DTV signal. Conventional DFE based least mean square (LMS) algorithm is readily implemented and has good Performance. There are still problems to be solved, however, in handling strong echoes and indoor reception. In this paper, structure of adaptive equalizer to mitigate these Problems in strong multipath interference conditions and indoor reception environment is first presented. Methods to reduce error propagation effects on DFE and initialization scheme of filter coefficients for fast convergence are then introduced. Computer simulation results prove that an adaptive equalizer with proposed design methods can combat with Brazil Ensemble and the Threshold of Visibility(TOV) is improved.

Audio Transcoding for Audio Streams from a T-DTV Broadcasting Station to a T-DMB Receiver

  • We propose an efficient audio transcoding algorithm that can convert audio streams from terrestrial digital television broadcasting service stations to those for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting hand-held receivers. The proposed algorithm avoids the complicated psychoacoustic analysis by calculating the scalefactors of the bit-sliced arithmetic coding encoder directly from the signal-to-noise ratio parameters of the AC-3 decoder. The bit-allocation process is also simplified by cascading the nested distortion control loop. Through subjective evaluation, it is shown that the proposed algorithm provides comparable audio quality to tandem coding but it requires much smaller complexity.

  • In this paper, we propose a calculation methodology of the service distance to assure the satisfactory quality of service for analogue and digital TV receivers. Using the field strength formulation for TV receiver based upon Rec. ITU-R P.1546, computational results are presented and discussed for both systems, and some important factors are reviewed in terms of the equivalent level of service, which must be kept due to ATV to DTV conversion. The presented method provides the predicted values of field strength at receiver areas to check whether transmission quality can be satisfied or not, and it can be also used for obtaining the protection ratio or separated distance from co-channel or adjacent interference signal.

  • 2012년 지상파 아날로그 TV 방송의 종료 및 디지털 TV 전환에 따라 디지털 TV를 활용한 차세대 방송서비스에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 2005년 전국 방송을 시작으로 현재 5000만대 이상의 수신기가 보급되어 있는 지상파 DMB(T-DMB:Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting)의 효과적인 활용을 위한 연구도 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이러한 서비스 중 안전에 대한 인식이 증대되면서 재난 발생시 최단시간에 관련된 정보를 수신할 수 있는 방송서비스에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 특히 재난 시 방송을 시청하지 않더라도 자동으로 재난상황을 인지하여 Wake-up할 수 있는 기술에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 고에서는 기존의 국내 및 해외의 재난 경보 방송시스템에 대해 검토하고 지상파 디지털 TV와 T-DMB를 통한 차세대 방송서비스로 연구되고 있는 자동인지 Wake-up기술에 대해 소개한다.

  • The Terrestrial DTV service compliant with ATSC has been advancing for years. In KBA(Korean Broadcasters Association), a multi-channel service was broadcasted on air during the period of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany with the various type of MMS(Multi Mode Service) using MPEG-2 encoding method. MMS Service can provides not only one HD channel but also serveral additional services within 6MHz bandwidth. Using digital video compression technology(MPEG-2), many various programs such as HDTV, SDTV, Audio and Data are able to be transmitted within the same bandwidth. From November 2009, KBS has been preparing an advanced MMS service, 'Korea-View' which has both methods of encoding, MPEG-2 and H.264 that is compliant ATSC mobile standard, A/153. Korea-View is a kind of multi-channel broadcast service to provide one HD and 3 SD programs with the bandwidth of 6MHz. Terrestrial multi-channel service is required to focuse on expanding viewer service. Such Terrestrial multi-channel services will contribute to transferring to digital broadcasting and to extending the viewers' welfare. Due to advances in digital technology, Pay-TV channels has increased to hundreds. Even though digital switchover is being proceeded, terrestrial broadcasters have been unable to deliver multi-channel services. In this paper, technical features and differences of MMS and Koreaview will be analyzed regarding terrestrial multi-channel broadcasting services, and the politic direction will be proposed in accordance with introduction of future service.

  • According to the recent developments of computer, terrestrial broadcasting, satellite broadcasting and CATV technologies, Multimedia TV application combined with such technologies will emerge. Therefore, it is demanded that high-power, wide-band, and high-frequency performance. In this paper, HPA(high power amplifier) for digital TV transmission system is proposed. The analysis and evaluation on the proposed amplifier have been performed by 2-tone signal for general performance evaluation and by 8-VSB signal for comparison with real system. In result, proposed HPA satisfies requirements of high-power, wide-band, and high-frequency performance.

  • In this paper, a design method for a broadband planar dipole antenna for the terrestrial digital television (DTV) reception is studied. The proposed antenna is an asymmetrical planar dipole consists of a rectangular patch with an embedded t-shaped slit, and the antenna shape is printed on a side of an FR4 substrate. The effects of geometrical parameters on the antenna performance are examined, and the parameters are adjusted to operate in the DTV frequency band of 470-806 MHz. The prototype antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a size of $260mm{\times}30mm$. The performance of the antenna is tested experimentally to verify the results of this study.

  • The Korea terrestrial broadcasting has TV and Radio, DMB. The TV broadcasting was converted from the analogue method to the digital method at the end of 2012. However the radio broadcasting is still in analogue method. The introduction of digital radio technology will bring many benefits such as high-quality of sound, various additional services and increase of efficiency in frequency utilization. In many countries, the radio broadcasting is been servicing in digital method. The discussion was begun on this year for the introduction of digital radio technology in Korea. So, to prepare against introduction of DAB system among digital radio technology, this paper proposes channel allocation method for each local radio broadcasting and the composition of national SFN, and proves the proposed method through the interference analysis.

  • ATSC terrestrial DTV system can support high data rates for HDTV(High Definition Television) service, but it suffers from significant performance degradation caused by multipath fading. Thus, it is necessary to analyze multipath fading effects in order to enhance the DTV reception performance. Generally, DTV channel profile can be obtained by auto-correlation between reference pseudo random signal and received DTV signal. However, in the ATSC terrestrial DTV system, the estimation performance of DTV channel profile may be decreased due to the VSB modulation features. In this paper, improved DTV channel profile measurement technique is analyzed and proposed.

  • In a Single Frequency Network (SFN) for Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) terrestrial digital television (DTV) system, the interferences induced by the multiple transmitters and/or repeaters using same frequency are unavoidable. To ease the interference handing in the SFN for ATSC DTV system, transmitter identification (TxID) signal is recommended in the ATSC terrestrial DTV system. The TxID signal is embedded in the ATSC DTV signal and transmitted from each transmitter and repeater within the SFN and in ATSC recommended practice (RP) A/111, Kasami sequence is recommended as the TxID signal. In this paper, we propose an additional data transmission scheme using the TxID signal. In the proposed scheme, the Kasami sequence not only acts as the conventional TxID of the SFN for ATSC terrestrial DTV system but also carriers the additional data bits on its polarity and the code phase.
