  • On a groupoid satisfying the Austin's identity, every n-ary linear term is essentially n-ary. That is, if a term has no variables appearing more than once, then the term depends on every variable it involves.

  • A laboratory-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) was continuously operated for 100 d at an infinite sludge retention time (SRT) with the aim of identifying possible relation between the filterability of mixed liquor and sludge properties, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), soluble microbial products (SMP), viscosity of mixed liquor, zeta potential of flocs and particle size distributions (PSD). Research results confirmed that MBR can operate with a complete sludge retention ensuring good treatment performances for COD and $NH_3-N$. However, the long term operation (about 40 d) of MBR with no sludge discharge had a negative influence on sludge filterability, and an increase in membrane fouling rates with the time was observed. There as a strong correlation between the sludge filterability and the fouling rate. Among the different sludge properties parameters, the concentration SMP and EPS had a more closely correlation with the sludge filterability. The concentrations of SMP, especially SMP with MW above 10 kDa, had a strong direct correlation to the filterability of mixed sludge. The protein fractions in EPS were biodegradable and available for microorganism metabolism after about 60 days, and the carbohydrates in EPS had a significantly negative effect on sludge filterability in MBR at an infinite SRT.

  • In this study, dynamic boundary element method using mass matrix is derived, using fundamental solutions for the semi-infinite domain. In constituting boundary integral equations for the dynamic equilibrium condition, inertia term in the form of domain integral is transformed into boundary integral form. Corresponding system equations are derived, and a boundary element program is developed. In addition, equations for free vibration is formulated, and eigenvalue analysis is performed. The results from the dynamic boundary element analysis for a tunnel problem are compared with those from the finite element analysis. According to the comparison, boundary element method using mass matrix is consistent with the results of finite element method. Consequently, in tunnel vibration problems, it results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed.

  • The turbulent hydrogen-air diffussion flame was studied experimentally and theoretically. Laser Doppler anemometer was used to measure the velocity field in the flame. Two mathematical models for the combustion reaction term, which are infinite rate model and finite rate to be derived eddy break-up model, were tested by comparing predictions with experimental data for coaxial turbulent diffusion flame. The agreement between the predictions and the data is, on the whole, very good in the case of employing the finite rate model rather than the infinite rate model. But, it was shown that the finite rate model was practically applicable to the predictions of the turbulent diffussion flame structure.

  • The problem of scalar wave scattering by a sphere on or near a planar substrate is analytically solved. The solution is a set of wave functions coming in the form of infinite series of spherical and plane waves. In air, the incident plane wave is either scattered by the sphere or reflected from the substrate. A part of these scattered or reflected waves propagate to the other object where it is reflected and scattered again. Such processes of scattering and reflection repeat in turn indefinitely to generate multiply scattered waves, which are represented in the corresponding terms in the infinite series. The term in the series can be arranged in a recognizable manner to explicitly reveal the involved process and the multiplicity of scattering.

  • An indefinite stochastic linear-quadratic(LQ) optimal control problem with cross term over an infinite time horizon is studied, allowing the weighting matrices to be indefinite. A systematic approach to the problem based on semidefinite programming (SDP) and .elated duality analysis is developed. Several implication relations among the SDP complementary duality, the existence of the solution to the generalized Riccati equation and the optimality of LQ problem are discussed. Based on these relations, a numerical procedure that provides a thorough treatment of the LQ problem via primal-dual SDP is given: it identifies a stabilizing optimal feedback control or determines the problem has no optimal solution. An example is provided to illustrate the results obtained.

  • This paper is concerned with investigating the asymptotic behavior of end effects for a generalized heat conduction problem with an added dissipation term defined on a three-dimensional semi-infinite cylinder. With homogeneous Dirichlet conditions on the lateral surface of the cylinder it is shown that solutions either grow exponentially or decay exponentially in the distance from the finite end of the cylinder. In particular, to render decay estimate explicit, we pattern after the analysis of Payne and Song [13, 15]. The continuous dependence effect of perturbing the equations parameters is also investigated.

  • We highlight the alternative presentation of the Cauchy-Riemann conditions for the analyticity of a complex variable function and consider plane equilibrium problem for an elastic transversely isotropic layer, in finite deformation. We state the fundamental problems and consider traction boundary value problem, as an example of fundamental problem-one. A simple solution of“Lame's problem”for an infinite layer is obtained. The profile of the deformed contour is given; and this depends on the order of the term used in the power series specification for the complex potential and on the material constants of the medium.

  • Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, governing 2-dimensional, time-dependent, viscous, incompressible fluid flow past a square cylinde in an infinite region, are presented for Reynolds numbers $10^2$, $10^3$and $10^4$. Finite-difference scheme, based on SOLA-VOF is adopted and a discretization of the convection term for irregular grid is newly suggested by altering the original nonconservation form into conservation one. Distribution of finer grids around the body reveals fairly reasonable consistency with the experimental variables : drag coefficient, lift coefficient, Strouhal number, fluctuating pressure coefficient, etc.

  • This paper provides a complex variable BIE for solving the periodic notch problems in plane plasticity. There is no limitation for the configuration of notches. For the periodic notch problem, the remainder estimation technique is suggested. In the technique, the influences on the central notch from many neighboring notches are evaluated exactly. The influences on the central notch from many remote notches are approximated by one term with a multiplying factor. This technique provides an effective way to solve the problems of periodic structures. Several numerical examples are presented, and most of them have not been reported previously.
