  • Electromagnetic wave transmission through periodic metal-insulator-metal(MIM) waveguides as a function of plate thickness has not been extensively studied at various terahertz frequencies. In this paper, we investigate the transmittances through gold MIM slits when a normally incident wave with parallel polarization is considered at several terahertz frequencies. In addition, the results are compared to the case of a perfect electric conductor, and the differences are discussed.

  • The results of the experimental and theoretical studies conducted on terahertz filtering using two parallel-plate waveguides (PPWGs) are presented herein. The first PPWG with 355 ${\mu}m$ plate separation generates 4 THz bandwidth TM modes ($TM_0,\;TM_2,\;and\;TM_4$), whereas the second PPWG with 100 ${\mu}m$ plate separation operated the THz filter for the generated TM modes with 1.5 THz cutoff frequency. The outgoing THz wave of the two PPWGs was truncated until 1.5 THz, and the system was operated using a high-pass THz filter. The absorption and dispersion of the combined TM and TE modes for the filtering system were calculated. The theoretical calculation and measurement results for the cutoff and oscillation frequency in the spectrum domain agreed well.

  • We report efficient direct coupling of THz dipole antenna pulses onto air spaced two-wire transmission lines and Teflon covered two-wire lines. The air spaced two-wire lines show TEM mode propagation with very small group velocity dispersion (GVD) and relatively low attenuation. The Teflon covered two-wire lines showed comparatively much higher attenuation and GVD. However, the Teflon covered two-wire lines show a very good guiding property when the lines are curved. Although the lines are circled only 5.0 cm in diameter, there is no additional attenuation compared to straight the lines.

  • Air-guided single-mode propagation of THz radiation in a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time. The PCW has been fabricated by introducing an air defect at the center of an air/Si 1D photonic crystal. By using a THz time-domain spectroscopic technique, we have experimentally shown that the guiding mechanism of the air-guiding PCW is the photonic bandgap effect.

  • Eigenvalue distributions for a periodic metal-insulator-metal waveguide, classified into the point spectrum and the discretized continuous spectrum (DCS), are investigated as functions of frequencies, gap widths, and periods. Muller's method is suggested for solving exact eigenvalues, and we propose the scheme for finding proper initial values in the Muller's method by considering only ${\Re}e({\varepsilon}_r)$ in the dispersion equation. We then find that anti-crossing behavior, repulsive effect between the point spectrum and the DCS, becomes stronger when the real parts of the roots in the point spectrum have smaller values. Finally, we examine the transmittances of a single subwavelength slit for real metals using the mode matching technique. The transmittances in real metals similarly follow those of the perfect electric conductor (PEC) at low frequencies, while the patterns at higher frequencies begin to differ from the PEC.

  • In recent years, the field of THz photonics based on THz pulse technology has gained tremendous, world-wide interest as a new exciting research subject. With a possibility of many commercial applications as well as fundamental scientific achievements in the field, many advanced nations are stepping up their effort in advancing the field of THz photonics. This fact is supported by the observation of the significant increase in the number of papers on THz pulse technology presented in renowned international journals and conferences. The subject that is interesting for the THz application is the development of THz pulse sources and detectors, and other passive devices. In this paper, we present a brief review on some of the key devices and their relavant measurement techniques such as THz photoconductive antennas, optical rectification, difference frequency geneneration with quasi-phase matching structures, electro-optic sampling, high speed real time measurements, THz transmission lines, and other various waveguide structures.
