Estimation of rock tensile and compressive moduli with Brazilian disc test

  • The elastic modulus is an important parameter to characterize the property of rock. It is common knowledge that the strengths of rocks are significantly different under tension and compression. However, little attention has been paid to the bi-modularity of rock. To validate whether the rock elastic moduli in tension and compression are the same, Brazilian disc, direct tension and compression tests were conducted. A horizontal laser displacement meter and a pair of vertical and transverse strain gauges were applied. Four types of materials were tested, including three types of rock materials and one type of steel material. A comprehensive comparison of the elastic moduli based on different experimental results was presented, and a tension-compression anisotropy model was proposed to explain the experimental results. The results from this study indicate that the rock elastic modulus is different under tension and compression. The ratio of the rock elastic moduli under compression and tension ranges from 2 to 4. The rock tensile moduli from the strain data and displacement data are approximate. The elastic moduli from the Brazilian disc test are consistent with those from the uniaxial tension and compression tests. The Brazilian disc test is a convenient method for estimating the tensile and compressive moduli of rock materials.

  • This paper is concerned with a test method that can be used to investigate the parameters of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model. These parameters are essential for accurately analyzing material behavior under impact loading conditions in numerical simulation. Ti-6Al-4V alloy (HCP crytal structure) was used as a specimen for the experiments. In the $10^{-3}-10^3/s$ strain rate range, three types of experimental methods (convention, compression and tension) were employed to compare the differences using MTS-810, SHPB and SHTB. Finite element analysis results when applying these parameters were displayed along with the experiment results.

  • In this study, the experimental methods are compared for obtaining the parameters of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model. The parameters used for numerical simulation are very important in making an accurate estimation of numerical simulation. So, the testing method of obtaining the parameters is also very important. We compared the difference of conventional method, compression method and tensile method of AISI-4340 steel at various strain rate by using MTS, SHPB and SHTB. Taylor impact test and M&S were carried out to compare differences among these three types of JC constitutive parameter.

  • The static and fatigue tests have been carried out to verify the validity of a generalized residual strength degradation model. And a new method of parameter determination in the model is verified experimentally to account for the effect of tension-compression fatigue loading of spheroidal graphite cast iron. It is shown that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction on the statistical distribution of fatigue life by using the proposed method is very reasonable. Furthermore, it is found that the correlation between the theoretical prediction and the experimental results of fatigue life in case of tension-tension fatigue data in composite material appears to be reasonable. Therefore, the proposed method is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter than maximum likelihood method and minimization technique.

  • The non-linear properties of rubber material which are described as strain energy function are important parameter to design and evaluate of rubber spring. These are determined by material tests which are uni-axial tension and bi-axial tension. The computer simulation using the nonlinear element analysis program executed to predict and evaluate the load capacity and stiffness for chevron spring. In order to investigate the heat-aging effects on the rubber material properties, the acceleration test were carried out. Compression set results changes as the threshold are used for assessment of the useful life and time to threshold value were plotted against reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. By using the compression set test, several useful life prediction for rubber material were proposed.

Development of Design Method of Compression(SSC) Anchor (압축헝 앵커의 설계법 개발)

  • For the design of compression anchor, three things should be considered. The first is a resistance force by skin friction, the second is a tension strength of tendon, and the third is a compressive strength of grout. Especially, compressive strength of grout is the most important design parameter of compression anchor. When compression anchor is pulled out from the ground, the compressive strength of grout increases by confining pressure of ground($\sigma_{tg$). Here, $\sigma_{tg$ is the confining pressure which is produced by earth pressure at rest and by lateral expansion of grout. We call this phenomenon of increase of confining pressure "poisson effect". In this paper, the design method of compression anchor called SSC anchor and the computer program for the design are developed through compression tests of anchor body grout.ody grout.

  • A new method of parameter determination in the fatigue residual strength degradation model is proposed. The new method and minimization technique is compared experimentally to account for the effect of tension-compression fatigue loading of spheroidal graphite cast iron and graphite/epoxy laminate. It is shown that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction on the fatigue life and residual strength distribution using the proposed method is very reasonable. Therefore, the proposed method is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter than minimization technique for the prediction of the fatigue characteristics.

  • The damping force of shock absorber in an automobile is determined by the components which construct the S/A. In this study we investigate the individual effect of these components on damping force. In addition, opening of important valve doling compression and tension cycle due to up-down reciprocation movement is also researched. Thus we are to strictly control the properties and tolerance of components having important effects on tile damping force and to produce S/A of better quality.

  • The damping force is determined by four valves and the components which consist of the shock absorber for vehicle. In this study it is investigated the individual effects of four valves and these components on damping forces using dynamic behaviour analysis program of the shock absorber. In addition, opening of main valves are researched during compression and tension cycle due to up- down reciprocation movement of piston. We are to strictly control the properties and tolerance of componenets having important effects on the damping force. Thus we are intended to produce shock absorber of better quality.

  • The companion paper presents a new three-parameter model for the uniaxial rate-sensitive material response, which is based on a bilinear static stress-strain relationship with kinematic strain-hardening. This paper extends the proposed model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and discusses the implementation of the new models within an incremental-iterative solution procedure. For steel, the three-parameter rate-function is employed with a trilinear static stress-strain relationship, which allows the utilisation of different levels of rate-sensitivity for the plastic plateau and strain-hardening ranges. For concrete, on the other hand, two trilinear stress-strain relationships are used for tension and compression, where rate-sensitivity is accounted for in the strain-softening range. Both models have been implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used herein to provide verification for the models, and to demonstrate their applicability to the rate-sensitive analysis of steel and reinforced concrete structures.
