  • The elastic modulus is an important parameter to characterize the property of rock. It is common knowledge that the strengths of rocks are significantly different under tension and compression. However, little attention has been paid to the bi-modularity of rock. To validate whether the rock elastic moduli in tension and compression are the same, Brazilian disc, direct tension and compression tests were conducted. A horizontal laser displacement meter and a pair of vertical and transverse strain gauges were applied. Four types of materials were tested, including three types of rock materials and one type of steel material. A comprehensive comparison of the elastic moduli based on different experimental results was presented, and a tension-compression anisotropy model was proposed to explain the experimental results. The results from this study indicate that the rock elastic modulus is different under tension and compression. The ratio of the rock elastic moduli under compression and tension ranges from 2 to 4. The rock tensile moduli from the strain data and displacement data are approximate. The elastic moduli from the Brazilian disc test are consistent with those from the uniaxial tension and compression tests. The Brazilian disc test is a convenient method for estimating the tensile and compressive moduli of rock materials.

  • Potentially significant mechanical improvements in tension can be achieved by the incorporation of randomly distributed, short discrete fibers in concrete. The improvements due to the incorporation fibers significantly influence the composite stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) characteristics. In general incorporating fibers in a plain concrete has relatively small effect on its precracking behavior. It, however, alters its post-cracking behavior quite significantly, resulting in greatly improved ductility, crack controls, and energy absorption capacity (or toughness). Therefore, a thorough understanding the complete tensile stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) response of fiber reinforced concrete is necessary for proper analysis while using structural components made with fiber reinforced concrete. Direct tensile stress applied to a specimen is in principle the simplest configuration for determining the tensile response of concrete. However, problems associated with testing brittle materials in tension include (i) the problem related to gripping of the specimen and (ii) the problem of ensuring centric loading. Routinely, indirect tension tests for plain concrete, flexural and split-cylinder tests, have been used as simpler alternatives to direct uniaxial tension test. They are assumed to suitable for fiber reinforced concrete since typically such composites comprise 98% by volume of plain concrete. Clearly since the post-cracking characteristics are significantly influenced by the reinforcing parameters and interface characteristics, it would be fundamentally incorrect to use indirect tensile tests for determining the tensile properties of fiber reinforced concrete. The present investigation represents a systematic look at the failure and toughening mechanisms and macroscopic stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) characteristics of fiber reinforced concrete in the uniaxial tension test. Results from an experimental parametric study involving used fiber quantity, type, and mechanical properties in the uniaxial tension test are presented and discussed.

  • The effects of temperature, cooling surface tension on the fining were studied in alkali-alkaline earth-silica TV screen glassmelts containing ZnO. Sodium antimonate $(Na_2OSb_2O_5)$ was used as a fining agent. Viscosity and surface tension of the melts were determined. On the basis of these properties, fining tests for several batches were performed by "MF" (Melting and Fining) and "PMF" (Profiled melting and Fining) methods. The results of these tests showed an opposite behavior each other with increase in ZnO content. This hehavior has been discussed in terms of two fining processes-growth of bubbles and shrinkage of seeds. shrinkage of seeds.

  • Tension stiffening effects of reinforced concrete member with large diameter bar, mainly used at reactor building of nuclear power plant, are studied by uniaxial structural tests. Bond length and stress of steel bar, size of steel bar, and compressive strength of concrete are evaluated to tension stiffening by uniaxial tests. Problems and solution during the uniaxial test are suggested. The prevent splitting cracks, concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio $c/d_{b}$ is kept 2.6~2.8. Because the bond length is increased as the size of steel bar, the specimen length of the D35 steel bar is required at least 2.0 m. The specimen length must be decided with bond length as well as concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio to prevent splitting crack.

  • The low cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep-fatigue (hold time tension fatigue, HTTF) tests were performed on the modified 25Cr-13Ni cast stainless steel, which was selected as a candidate material for exhaust manifold in automotive engine. The exhaust manifold is subjected to an environment in which heating and cooling cycle occur due to the running pattern of automotive engine. Several types of fatigue behaviour such as thermal fatigue, thermal mechanical fatigue and creep-fatigue are belong to the main failure mechanisms. High temperature tensile test was firstly carried out to compare the sample with the traditional cast steel for the component. The low cycle fatigue and HTTF tests were carried out under the strain controlled condition with the total strain amplitude from ${\pm}0.6%$ to ${\pm}0.7%$ at $800^{\circ}C$. The hysteresis loops of HTTF tests showed significant stress relaxation during tension hold time. With the increase of tension hold time, the fatigue life was remarkably deceased which caused from the formation of intercrystalline crack by the creep failure mechanism.

  • A series of forced oscillation tests on a model mooring chain was carried out to investigate dynamic tension characteristics. The model test was conducted at two different water depths to gather basic data for a 'truncated mooring test' and 'hybrid mooring test'. The truncated and hybrid mooring tests are important for overcoming the limitation of water depth that existed in previous model tests. The resultant tension RAO provides a good possibility of approximation of dynamic tension by equivalent weight adjustment for different water depths. Because the hybrid mooring test is an adequate combination of model test and simulation, an accurate simulation model for the mooring system is essential. The simulation results show good agreement with model test results.

  • A lot of cargo accidents occurred due to insufficient securing in the case of marine transportation. If the residual tension of securing rope can be predicted, it will be very useful in the handling of cargo securing work of operators. It was confirmed in the previous study that the fluctuation tension cf securing rope by oscillation could be predicted. In this paper, in order to the prediction of residual tension of securing rope, the experiments were carried out to measure the residual tension of securing rope under the oscillation and cyclic loadings. The residual tensions of two tests were in good agreement with each other. It can be predicted through the cyclic loading test in the estimated fluctuation tension without oscillation test by ship motion simulator.

  • The tension stiffening in reinforced concrete member means increase of stiffness caused by the effective tensile stress between cracks and the tension softening behavior of concrete. This paper presents on the tensile behavior and tension stiffening of RC tension members. Direct tension tests were performed with a main experimental variables such as concrete strength, rebar diameter and strength. The tension stiffening was analyzed from the load-displacement relationship and was compared with ACI code, CEB model and the proposed by Collins & Mitchell. The results are as follows : The tension behaviors of RC members were quite different from those of bare bar and were characterized by loading and concrete cracking steps. The effect of tension stiffening decreased rapidly as the rebar diameter and strength increased, and the concrete strength increased. The proposed by Collins & Mitchell described well the experimental results, regardless of rebar types and concrete. But, ACI code and CEB model described a little differently, depending on the types. The effect of tension stiffening in RC member was the biggest near at concrete cracking step and decreased gradually to the bare bar's behavior as loading closed to the breaking point. Thus, tension stiffening in RC members should be taken into account when the load-deflection characteristics of a member are required or a precise analysis near the load of concrete clacking is needed.

  • The extensive use of composite insulators for transmission lines can ultimately be justified only on long-term qualification tests. The actual load working on the insulator in the field is not static load but cyclic load. So in this paper, we discussed an examination of aging degradation by mechanical performance of composite insulators under static tension load and cyclic tension load. and also described useful approaches for analyzing their long term performance so as to develop reliable composite insulators. The static and cyclic tension load-time test data were examined by Weibull distribution for their capability of presuming long term performance. It was found that cyclic tension loads were more severe than static tension loads. The results also indicate that it may be relevant for an user to select composite insulators on basis of their performance under cyclic tension loads than static tension loads.
