An efficient multi-objective optimization method is presented making use of neural network and a systematic satisficing trade-off method (STOM), in order to simultaneously improve both maneuverability and durability of tire. Objective functions are defined as follows: the sidewall-carcass tension distribution for the former performance while the belt-edge strain energy density for the latter. A back-propagation neural network model approximates the objective functions to reduce the total CPU time required for the sensitivity analysis using finite difference scheme. The satisficing trade-off process between the objective functions showing the remarkably conflicting trends each other is systematically carried out according to our aspiration-level adjustment procedure. The optimization procedure presented is illustrated through the optimum design simulation of a representative automobile tire. The assessment of its numerical merit as well as the optimization results is also presented.
Employing the Phan-Thien tanner (PTT) fluids model, dynamic behavior of the non-isothermal melt spinning has been investigated. Subjects such as draw resonance instability, the effects of spinline cooling and of the fluid viscoelasticity on the spinning dynamics have been studied using the governing equations of the system. In particular, the draw resonance criterion based on the traveling times of various kinematic waves in the spinline has been confirmed, the reason why the spinline cooling is stabilizing is analyzed, and the effect of fluid viscoelasticity on the spinline stability is summarized. It is believed that the same method as in this study can be applied with equal ease to other extension deformation processes like film casting and film blowing.

In this study, we fabricated Bi-2223/Ag high temperature superconducting tapes using PIT(Powder-In-Tube) process to apply the superconducting magnet, cable and etc. It is inevitable to deform the superconducting taps with axial strain for application. Therefore, for the characterization of the strain sensitivity of the superconducting properties, the degradation of Bi-2223/Ag tapes due to axial strain were investigated by measuring the critical current as a function of applied tension strain and external magnetic field. The critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes were decreased slightly up to 0.3∼0.4% applied strain but, drastically decreased more than these strains. Superconducting filament cores consisted of brittle ceramic fibers were broken easily by the large strain and current path were decreased simultaneously.
In order to improve automobile maneuverability and tire durability, it is very important for one to determine a suitable sidewall contour producing the ideal tension and strain-energy distributions. In order to determine such a sidewall contour, one must apply multi-objective optimization technique. The optimization problem of tire carcass contour involves several objective functions. Hence, we execute the tire contour optimization for improving the maneuverability and the tire durability using satisficing trade-off method. And, the tire optimization also requires long cup time for the sensitivity analysis. In order to resolve this numerical difficulty, we apply neural network algorithm.
The recent large-spatial structures are frequently made from light-weight structural system and it has a good mechanical efficiency and uses new materials. The large space is made by light-weight structural system using tension members mainly, and generally it is called a soft structure. The cable dome structures which are a soft structures are very flexible, the stresses and nodal coordinates of other members are changed when we control the stress of one member. Therefore, we have to do two kind of works for effective and accurate construction of the cable dome structures. The first work is making a working scenario to complete the final objective form and the second is revising constructional errors occurred in process of the actual works. These works are called constructional analysis. At this time, we have to consider geometric nonlinearity to reflect the sensitivity by the initial stresses of cable dome structures, and constructional analysis comes down to a nonlinear problem after all. In this study, we try to approach the constructional analysis of the cable dome structures using the numerical method, and then verify it.

The method based on various mathematical characteristic equations for identifying tensile forces in the cable structure system are used as response data to reflect the properties of the dynamic sensitivity. The vibration tests have been conducted with respect to levels of applied weight for the sagged cable. In this study, a set of natural frequencies are extracted from the measured dynamic data. Next, existing characteristic equation methods based these extracted natural frequencies are applied to identify tensil forces of the sagged cable system. Through several verification procedures, the proposed methods could be applied to a sagged cable system when the initial material data are insufficiency.

Glass fiber reinforced polymeric composites hold considerable promise for increased use in low cost high volume applications because of the potential for processing by solid phase forming. Unfortunately, because of the wide variety of such materials, inherent bariability in properties, and complex temperature and strain rate dependence, large strain behavior of these materials has not been well characterized. Of particular importance is failure during processing due to localized necking instability, and it is this phenomenon that is primary focus of this study. The strain rate and temperature dependence is used to predict limiting tensile strains, based on Mackinack imperfection theory. Excellent correlation was obtained between theory and experiment, and the results are summarized in the limit strains as a function of temperature and stain rate.

Fundamental issues in static finite element analysis of reinforced concrete panel subjected to biaxial tensile loads are discussed. This paper is trying to bring our attention to the appropriate use of concrete material models such as cracking criteria, tension stiffening model and the steel models which are basically used in the nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete panels. We mainly investigate the sensitivity of available material models and finite element technologies to the finite element analysis result using our recent reinforced concrete panel experiment result. Throughout this study, we found that the judicious use of the material models and finite element technologies with the sound understanding of structural characteristics can only guarantee the accurate prediction of panel behaviour.
Responding to the threat of terrorist attacks around the world, numerous studies have been conducted to search for new methods of vulnerability assessment and protective technologies for critical infrastructure under extreme bomb blasts or high velocity impacts. In this paper, a two-dimensional behavioral rate dependent lattice model (RDLM) capable of analyzing reinforced concrete members subjected to blast and impact loading is presented. The model inherently takes into account several major influencing factors: the progressive cracking of concrete in tension, the inelastic response in compression, the yielding of reinforcing steel, and strain rate sensitivity of both concrete and steel. A computer code using the explicit algorithm was developed based on the proposed lattice model. The explicit code along with the proposed numerical model was validated using experimental test results from the Woomera blast trial.
There is world wide concern for safety of nuclear power installations after the terrorist attack on World Trade Center in 2001 and several other civilian structures in the last decade. The nuclear containment structure in many countries is a double shell structure (outer shell a RCC and inner a prestressed concrete). The outer reinforced concrete shell protects the inner shell and is designed for external loading like impact and blast. A comparative study of non-linear response of reinforced concrete nuclear containment cylindrical shell subjected to impact of an aircraft (Phantom) and explosion of different amounts of blast charges have been presented here. A material model which takes into account the strain rate sensitivity in dynamic loading situations, plastic and visco-plastic behavior in three dimensional stress state and cracking in tension has been developed earlier and implemented into a finite element code which has been validated with published literature. The analysis has been made using the developed software. Significant conclusions have been drawn for dissimilarity in response (deflections, stresses, cracks etc.) of the shell for impact and blast loading.
