  • Previous research indicates that depressive symptoms and alcohol consumption are highly correlated with each other. However, there is lack of consensus on the causal relationship between depressive symptoms and alcohol use. In order to address this limitation, this paper examines causal relationship between the two variables using non-recursive structural equation modeling, controlling sociodemographic and psycho-socio-behavioral variables. Data included 14,469 community dwelling individuals who participated in Korea Welfare Panel Study in 2006. Results showed that the effects of alcohol consumption on depressive symptoms was statistically significant, whereas the effects of depressive symptoms on alcohol consumption was not. Significant portions of the effects of psycho-socio-behavioral variables on depressive symptoms were indirect through their effects on alcohol consumption. Based on the results, implications for intervention and future research were discussed.

  • The measured longitudinal reinforcement tensions in the shear-critical RC beams were significantly higher than the calculated values by the beam theory. This may be attributed to the reduction of the internal-moment arm length by the development of the arch action. In this paper, the measured longitudinal reinforcement tensions in the test performed by $Kim^4$ were compared with those predicted by the various truss model.

  • In this work, the multiple dynamic absorber( MDA ) is introduced to reduce several vibration modes of shadow mask simultaneously and its design method is developed from the theory of the simple dynamic absorber. When designing the dynamic absorber, there are three significant design parameters such as mass, damping ratio and tuning frequency. Therefore the sensitivity analysis for those parameters has been executed in order to find out the design criteria of multiple dynamic absorber using the finite element model of shadow mask. The multiple dynamic absorber(MDA) designed by the proposed method is tested theoretically and experimentally to estimate the efficiency of vibration reduction. From the results, it is verified that the method is feasible to apply the system having the multiple nitration modes and more efficient than the thin wire-type damper used commercially to reduce the vibration of shadow mask.

  • When evaluating pillar stability in very closely spaced tunnels, a local safety factor (strength/stress ratio) at the minimum width has been widely used. Tension bolts have been frequently applied as reinforcement for the cases where safety factors are less than 1.0 from FEM stress analysis. However, the local safety factor shows a constant value irrespective of the change in pillar width/tunnel diameter (PW/D) and the safety factor of the pillar is underestimated because the variation of deviation stress is relatively small even when the pre-stressing is applied to the tension bolt. In addition, the average safety factor proposed by Hoek and Brown(1980) was reviewed, but the pillar safety factor was relatively overestimated when the width of the pillar was increased. As an alternative, the SRM safety factor using shear strength reduction method shows the effect of changing the safety factor in the case of no reinforcement and tension bolt reinforcement as the pillar width/tunnel diameter(PW/D) changes. The failure shape is also similar to the previous limit theory result. In this study, the safety factor was evaluated without considering rock bolt and shotcrete to distinguish reinforcing effect of tension bolt.

  • The change of the global performance of a turret-moored FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) with DP (Dynamic Positioning) control is simulated, analyzed, and compared for two different internal turret location cases; bow and midship. Both collinear and non-collinear 100-yr GOM (Gulf of Mexico) storm environments and three cases (mooring-only, with DP position control, with DP position+heading control) are considered. The horizontal trajectory, 6DOF (degree of freedom) motions, fairlead mooring and riser tension, and fuel consumptions are compared. The PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller based on LQR (linear quadratic regulator) theory and the thrust-allocation algorithm which is based on the penalty optimization theory are implemented in the fully-coupled time-domain hull-mooring-riser-DP simulation program. Both in collinear and non-collinear 100-yr WWC (wind-wave-current) environments, the advantage of mid-ship turret is demonstrated by the significant reduction in heave at the turret location due to the minimal coupling with pitch mode, which is beneficial to mooring and riser design. However, in the non-collinear WWC environment, the mid-turret case exhibits unfavorable weathervaning characteristics, which can be reduced by employing DP position and heading controls as demonstrated in the present case studies. The present study also reveals the plausible cause of the failure of mid-turret Gryphon Alpha FPSO in milder environment than its survival condition.

  • An efficient method for the calculation of wave forces on a tension leg platform(TLP) is presented in this paper. It is based on the Morison's equation with two corrective terms. One is the reduction of the inertia forces on the vertical columns in order to include the wave diffraction effect particularly for small wave conditions. The other is the inclusion of the hydrodynamic forces acting at the bottoms of the columns. Numerical studies are carried out for a TLP in 1000 ft water with two different wave heading angles($0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$). The reponse amplitude operators(RAO's) for the TLP motions and top tether tension variations are obtained by the present method and the theoretically more accurate method based on the diffraction theory. A comparison has been made between the results obtained by two methods.

  • The mechanical properties of generally orthotropic materials are conventionally measured by performing off-axis tensile and flexure tests. However, the inevitable coupling between tension and shear in case of tensile test or bending and twisting in flexure test case induces nonuniform displacement and stress fields. Consequential stress concentration along the boundary of specimens would result in inaccurate modulus and underestimated strength. This paper proposes the variation of specimen geometry in terms of appropriate obliquity of loaded boundary. For the purpose, classical lamination theory is transformed into skewed coordinate, and characteristic equations for both of unidirectional and laminated composite specimens are formulated. Finite element analysis is employed to show the validity of the skewedness in tensile and bending test specimens.

  • In this study, to evaluate the long-term behavior characteristics and the loss of prestress force, the long-term measurement of the tensile anchors in the actual construction was performed and the results were analyzed comparing with the existing estimation. As the reinforcement member used for the purpose of slope stability or uplift-resisting of the permanent structure, etc, the permanent anchor should maintain the functions during the performance period of the structure differently from the temporary anchor. However, as the time passes by, since the relaxation and the creep of the anchor occur constantly, the management for the loss of tensile force is essential to perform the functions stably. So far, the loss of the tensile force has been estimated according to the reduction of the prestress using elasticity theory and using the relaxation value according to the type of tension member and the test using the long-term measurement is limited. Therefore, in this study, the site condition and the ground were investigated for the tensile anchor in the actual construction and the long-term measurement results more than 500 days was analyzed by installing the loadcell, inclinometer and the groundwater level gauge. In addition, the long-term behavior characteristics were evaluated by comparing the disposition of the measured earth retaining wall and the tension force loss of the anchor with the existing interpretation results. In the evaluation results, the most of the tension force loss occurs within 90 days and the loss was measured less than the estimated values.

  • This research examined influence of job stress and drinking subculture on the drinking of white collar employees. The results are as follows: First, there are a higher percentage of population among white collar employees who hold drinking problems in terms of frequency of drinking, amount of drinking, frequency of binge drinking comparing with general populace. The results of research revealed that drinking problems of white collar employees is quite close to dangerous level. Second, job stress didn't display a consistent relationship with drinking and drinking problem, however, drinking subculture revealed that it was related with drinking and drinking problem exhibiting significant influence. And, the results of research didn't support tension reduction hypothesis, and it was identified that social learning theory is main factor that will explain drinking and drinking problem of white collar employees. Therefore, researcher suggested as follow; First, practitioners and researchers exert their efforts for studying about drinking in the relationship to white collar employees. They should also have more interests in the topic from a practical perspective. Second, suggest that EAPs be introduced in order to prevent white collar employees from drinking problem and to promote increase of entire welfare. Third, suggest that succeeding research endeavors be required, which shall embrace all of white & blue collar employees.
