  • Direct tensile tests were carried out for the tensile members of MMA-modified polymer concrete with different steel kinds and steel diameters and steel ratios to figure out the effect of tensile strength of polymer concrete. In the experiments, MMA-modified polymer concrete with $1000\;kgf/cm^2$ of compressive strength, steel with $5200\;kgf/cm^2$ of tensile strength, and the tensile members with 100 cm of constant length were used. Experimental results showed that, regardless of steel kinds, diameters and steel content, the strain energy exerted by concrete till the initial crack was $14-15\%$ of the total energy till the point of yield: The energy was much larger than the one of high-strength cement concrete. The behaviors of tensile members of MMA-modified polymer concrete were in relatively good agreement with the model suggested by Gupta-Maestrini (1990), which was idealized by the effective tensile stress-strain relationship of concrete and the load-strain relationship of members, while those showed a big difference from CEB-FIP model and ACI-224 equation suggested for the load-displacement relationship that was defined as the cross sectional stiffness of effective axis. Modified ACI-224 model code about the load-displacement relationship for the tensile members of MMA-modified polymer concrete and theoretical equation for the polymer concrete tensile stiffness of polymer concrete suggested through the results of this study are expected to be used in an accurate structural analysis and resign for the polymer concrete structural members.

  • This paper deals with introduction of testing equipments for the evaluation of dynamic tensile characteristics of auto-body steel sheets and the crashworthiness of auto-body members. The servo-hydraulic high speed material testing machine was developed for tensile tests at the intermediate strain rate to obtain the tensile material properties at the strain rate under 500/sec. The split Hopkinson bar apparatus using the elastic wave was developed for dynamic material characteristics at the high strain rate ranged from 1,000 to 10,000/sec. The servo-hydraulic high speed crash testing machine is the equipment for the evaluation of the collapse load and crashworthiness of auto-body members. High speed carrying truck crashes to specimen with the maximum velocity of 17 m/sec.

  • Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has high compressive and tensile strengths due to the particle packing, and its ductile behavior can be ensured by utilizing steel fibers. However, since the UHPC members exhibit different characteristics of crack behavior and tensile behavior from normal concrete, the tension stiffening and cracking characteristics of the UHPC should be accurately modeled for the design and analysis of the UHPC members. In this study, uniaxial tension tests was conducted on the UHPC members with strands, where the test variables were diameter and reinforcing ratio of strands. Detailed analyses were also conducted to identify the tensile characteristics and crack behavior of the UHPC members. By comparing the test results with current code provisions and other models proposed by existing researchers, their applicability for estimation of crack behavior of the UHPC members was examined.

  • This study presents similarities and differences between Turkish Building Code for Steel Structures, which are TS 648 and SDCCSS (Specification for Design, Calculation and Construction of Steel Structures) in terms of the design of the members. Hot-rolled I-shaped steel sections for symmetrical and U-shaped steel sections (i.e., channels) for monosymmetric sections were elaborated in detail. The design strength of tension members under tensile load, compression members under axial load and flexural members under flexure and shear were examined separately. Connection details for tension members, slenderness for compression members and distance between lateral supports for flexural members were considered as prime variables. Analysis results revealed the design strength of the tension members where at least one of the cross-sectional parts is not connected to the connection plates, I-shaped compression members where a slenderness ratio is below 39 (𝛌<39), U-shaped compression members and flexural members where Lb is between Lp and Lr (Lpb≤Lr) designed based on TS 648 are greater than those designed based on SDCCSS 2018. Strength differences between the specification can reach 79% for tensile members, 13% for compression members and 9% for flexural members.

  • Since concrete has a low tensile strength compared to the compressive strength, reinforced concrete flexural members represent easy crack occurance under a small load. In order to overcome this problem, steel fiber reinforced concrete has been developed to compensate the tensile strength and brittleness of members. However, in the design formula of the domestic building code, it is not specified in the design formula reflecting the material characteristics. Therefore, the field application of the steel fiber reinforced concrete have had many restrictions. In this study, a flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete is proposed by collecting and analyzing the material properties of material test results conducted by various researchers, and verified by the test results of cracking and stiffness evaluation of flexural members based on the proposed model. As a result of this study, the flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete which can reflect the mixing ratio and aspect ratio of the steel fiber was proposed and the validity of the proposed material model equation was evaluated from the load-deflection relationship in the flexural test of the slab member.

  • Exact application of the tensile force is critical to high-tension members in civil engineering structures, and thus actual tensile forces have often been estimated in field. To date, a few methodologies have been presented utilizing static and/or dynamic responses of tension members. Each of these methods has its disadvantages as well as advantages in its procedures, accuracy, and equipment requirements. In this paper, the feasibility of a sensitivity based methodology, based on the relationship between the natural frequencies and the applied tensile force, developed by the authors, is verified using the measured data from a cable-stayed bridge structure. From the results, it is shown that the proposed method can be utilized in estimating the tensile force in tension member of a real structure.

  • The purpose of the present study is to propose a realistic method to analyze the prestressed concrete members subjected to pure torsion. The present study device a method to realistically take into account the tensile stiffness of concrete after cracking. The effect of biaxial compressive and tensile loading on the compressive and tensile strength of concrete is also taken into account in the present model. The present model can predict not only the service load behavior, but also up to the behavior of ultimate load stages. The comparison of the present theory with experimental data indicates that the proposed model dipicts reasonably well the actual behavior of prestressed concrete members.

  • When designing reinforced concrete (RC) members, the rebar is assumed to resist all tensile forces, but the resistance of the concrete in the tension area is neglected. However, concrete can also resist tensile forces and increase the tensile stiffness of RC members, which is called the tension stiffening effect (TSE). Therefore, this study assessed the TSE, particularly after yielding of the steel bars and the effects of the steel ratio on the TSE. For this purpose, RC member specimens with steel ratios of 2.87%, 0.99%, and 0.59% were fabricated for uniaxial tensile tests. A vision-based non-contact measurement system was used to measure the behavior of the specimens. The cracks on the specimen at the stabilized cracking stage and the fracture stage were measured with the image analysis method. The results show that the number of cracks increases as the steel ratio increases. The reductions of the limit state and fracture strains were dependent on the ratio of the rebar. As the steel ratio decreased, the strain after yielding of the RC members significantly decreased. Therefore, the overall ductility of the RC member is reduced with decreasing steel ratio. The yielding plateau and ultimate load of the RC members obtained from the proposed equations showed very good agreement with those of the experiments. Finally, the image analysis method was possible to allow flexibility in expand the measurement points and targets to determine the strains and crack widths of the specimens.
