The main objectives of this study are to investigate the anisotropic characteristics of rocks and to evaluate the relationships between physical properties. A series of experiments were performed in three mutually perpendicular directions for three rock types, which are granite, granitic gneiss and limestone. The relationships of measured physical properties were evaluated. The results of ultrasonic wave velocity measurement show that granite of three rock types gives the largest directional difference, and that the wave velocity in a plane parallel to a transversely isotropic one is dominantly faster than that in a subvertical or vertical plane. It implies that ultrasonic wave velocity for rock could be used as a useful tool for estimating the degree of anisotropy. The ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to Brazilian tensile strength ranges approximately from 13 to 16 for granite. from 8 to 9 for granite gneiss, and from 9 to 18 for limestone. The directional differences for granite and granitic gneiss are very small, and on the other hand, is relatively large for limestone. It is suggested that strength of rock makes quite difference depending on the rock types and loading directions, especially for the anisotropic rocks such as transversely isotropic or orthotropic rocks. The ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to point load strength index ranges from 18 to 20 for granite, from 17 to 19 for granitic gneiss, and from 21 to 24 for limestone. These results show that point load strength index makes also a difference depending on rock types and directions. Therefore. it should be noted that the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to point load strength index could be applied to all rock types. Uniaxial compressive strength shows relatively good relationship with point load strength index, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength. In particulat, point load strength index is shown to be the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate an uniaxial compressive strength indirectly.

Hydrophilic reactive hot-melt polyurethane adhesive(HRHA) using a hydrophilic polyol having different molecular weight and NCO index was synthesized. This HRHA was synthesized using Polyethylene glycol(PEG) as a hydrophilic polyol, Polypropylene glycol(PPG) and Polycaprolactone diol(PCL) as hydrophobic polyols, and Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate(MDI) as an isocyanate. The changes in IR spectrum, viscosity and thermal properties of HRHA with different PEG molecular weights and NCO index were investigated, and the tensile strength and elongation of the HRHA casting film and the peel strength, moisture permeability and water pressure of the HRHA coated fabric were confirmed. In this experiment, as the molecular weight of PEG and NCO index increased, the adhesive strength, tensile strength, elongation and moisture permeability was increased but viscosity and Tg was decreased.
Tuff specimens were thermally treated with predetermined temperatures of 200, 400 and $600^{\circ}C$ to construct specimens simulating weathered tuff rocks. Specific gravity, absorption ratio, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and slake-durability index were measured for pre-heated specimens. Heating of rock specimens entailed the degradation of material properties except for slake-durability index. It was found that correlations among P-wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus and absorption ratio are high. Regression equations which use the P-wave velocity as an independent variable were presented to evaluate uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus and absorption ratio.

In this paper the effects of particle size and model scale of concrete have been investigated on point load index, tensile strength, and the failure processes using a PFC2D numerical modeling study. Circular and semi-circular specimens of concrete were numerically modeled using the same particle size, 0.27 mm, but with different model diameters of 75 mm, 54 mm, 25 mm, and 12.5 mm. In addition, circular and semi-circular models with the diameter of 27 mm and particle sizes of 0.27 mm, 0.47 mm, 0.67 mm, 0.87 mm, 1.07 mm, and 1.27 mm were simulated to determine whether they can match the experimental observations from point load and Brazilian tests. The numerical modeling results show that the failure patterns are influenced by the model scale and particle size, as expected. Both Is(50) and Brazilian tensile strength values increased as the model diameter and particle sizes increased. The ratio of Brazilian tensile strength to Is(50) showed a reduction as the particle size increased but did not change with the increase in the model scale.

This study was performed to investigated the application of mixed resins for corrugated container board. The corrugated container board yields a sandwich structure in which a linerboard material is glued to a corrugated medium . Now, manufacturing corrugated container boards don't provide sufficient strength, and result in box failure during shipping . Therefore improvement of box strength is necessary . In this study, we intend to improve box strength by improving corrugated medium strength with mixed resins and to find the optimum treatment condition of this resins. First, we tried to mixed resins as Starch+CMC, Starch_Irea, CMC+Urea, Second, investigated to applicability of this resins for corrugated medium , and the third, measured tensile index, burst index, and edgewise compression index on liner, medium paper, and single faced corrugated container board. In this test results, we obtained that the improvement ratios of tensile index in liner and medium paper were approximately 80-185%, 60-118% , respectively. The respecting improvement ratios of edgewise compression index of single faced corrugated container board was approximately 91-124%, relatively. In addition, we concluded that optimum condition in mixing ratio was 1 :3 with CMC + Urea and the ap[plication amounts was 9% on materials. Fro manufacture of corrugated container board, optimum condition in mixing ratio was 1 : 3 with 5% CMC +Urea , because of considering to improvement of strength on cost.
Strength, elongation and elasticity are essential properties with regard to the tensile properties of raw silk thread. The reasonable harmony of the above three physical characters appears to be the specific nature of the raw silk thread and the dynamical functions are determined by the cocoon filament forming the raw silk. From such viewpoint, the author has studied the tensile property of the thread when the cocoon filament is stretched and transformed. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The stretching strength of the inner layer filament is stronger than that of the outer and medium layer ones. 2) The stretching strength of the filaments is influenced by the moisture-heat denaturalization of cocoon layer sericin in the drying process. 3) The more transformed functions by the stretching become, the lower the elasticity index of the cocoon filament was shown. 4) When cocoon layer sericin is denatured by moisture and heat, elasticity index of the filament is decreased.
Polyurethane resin containing isocyanate is marked by excellent tensile and mechanical strengths and this test aims to gauge its applicability as a medical high polymer. Tris [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]isocyanurate and hexamethylenediisocyanate were added to a basic mixing ratio of HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), NVP (n-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and crosslink agent, EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) with increasing proportions and copolymerized respectively. Also, the basic physical properties of the polymerized high polymers including refraction rate, tensile strength, light transmission and water content were measured to confirm that they are appropriate as hydrogelcontact lenses. After measuring the physical properties of high performance polymers produced by adding tris [2-(acryloyloxy) ethyl]isocyanurate, it was found that the average tensile strengths of sample TRIS1 to TRIS10 were between 0.285 and 0.612 kgf, while the average values of refractive index were ranged from 1.441 to 1.449 with water content from 30.00 to 37.35%.The measurement of physical properties of the copolymers generated by adding hexamethylenediisocyanate showed that the average tensile strength of sample HEXA1 to HEXA10 ranged from 0.267 to 1.742 kgf, the refractive index ranged from 1.443 to 1.475 and water contents were in the range of 21.22 to 35.58%. In all combinations the transmission rates satisfied the transmittance of general hydrogel contact lenses. From theresults, it is possible to conclude that the produced copolymers can be used as contact lens materials with excellent tensile strength.

In this study, six mortar mixes were tested in order to examine the significance and limitations of hydrophilic fiber in terms of its capacity to enhance the tensile resistance of Hwangtoh mortar. Lyocell, polyamide and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were selected for the main test parameters. The tensile capacity of mortars tested was evaluated based on the splitting tensile strength and the modulus of fracture, while their ductility was examined using the toughness indices specified in ASTM. Test results showed that the addition of lyocell and PVA fibers had little influence on the flow of the Hwangtoh mortars. To enhance the tensile capacity and toughness index of Hwangtoh mortar, it is proposed that fiber spacing above 0.0003 is required, regardless of the type of fiber.

The effects of refining either SwBKP or HwBKP, and both of SwBKP and HwBKP on the physical properties of paper were investigated in order to elucidate if the non-conventional refining and blending method can be used for the optimizing the paper properties. The blending ratio of SwBKP and HwBKP was 15:85. The highest bulk was obtained with the refining of SwBKP only. Any differences of opacity were not observed in unfilled paper, while the highest opacity of PCC filled paper was obtained at same bulk when the only HwBKP was refined. However burst index and tensile index did not showed any differences in the relationship with bulk. Therefore this result can be applied to improve the opacity of paper without sacrificing of strength properties.

Frankincense resin was applied to Hanji to improve its physical properties. The resin-treated paper showed the increasement of physical properties such as weight, thickness, and density. The highest increasement in weight and density of resin-treated paper were found at 30% treatment concentrations and the largest values of density were $41g/m^2$ Hanji. With the increasement of concentration, the brightness was decreased and transparency was improved. Of the mechanical properties of the paper, the tensile index and burst index showed the improved values. The tear index, however, was decreased. The frankincense resin showed the highest result in the tensile index of resin-treated paper and the basis weight of $41g/m^2$ Hanji. The air resistance of the resin-treated paper got improved with the increase of the concentration and $105g/m^2$ Hanji showed the highest values. The highest improvement in air resistance may make the resin-treated Hanji possible to use for semipermeable materials.
