In the literature on the tense consonants in Korean, it has been proposed that this consonant is underlyingly represented by a single consonant (the singleton hypothesis) and that it is represented by a sequence of two lenis consonants (the geminate hypothesis). One piece of the empirical evidence supporting the geminate hypothesis is that the closure duration of tense consonants in intervocalic position is more than twice as long in comparison with their lenis counterparts. In this paper, we report on the closure duration of three types of plosives in various phonotactically permitted contexts in Korean. The results of the measurement show that the duration of the tense consonants in post-sonorant contexts is reduced by a third in comparison with that of the intervocalic ones. These temporal differences suggest that the measurement of closure durations in intervocalic position alone is not sufficient to sustain the geminate hypothesis.
This paper tests whether the VOT (Voice Onset Time) contributes to the perception of tense and plain stops in Korean in the initial position. Previous studies have yielded opposite results regarding the role of the VOT in the distinction of these two stop categories. One the one hand, Lisker and Abramson (1964), Kim (1965), and Han and Weitzman (1970) suggest that the Korean plain and tense stops exhibit overlapping values of VOT and thus that, unlike many other languages, the VOT fails to serve as a cue to separate these stop categories. On the other hand, Silva (1991, 1992), and Lee (1991, 1994) use similar methods, but find that the VOT serve as the cue. In this study, the differences in the acoustic measurement with respect to the VOT of Korean plain and tense stops in initial prevocalic position will be tested preceptually, in seeking to determine whether these acoustic differences are used by listeners to distinguish these two stop types.
The purpose of this paper is to expand Stowell (1993), Stowell (1995), Stowell (1996)'s syntactic analysis of tense in English. Stowell treats Tense as a dyadic predicate of temporal ordering which takes those two time-denoting phrases as its arguments. He further argues that those two morphemes 'resent' and 'past' are polarity-sensitive elements encoding an LF-scope relation with respect to true PAST tense. This paper proposes that English future 'will' should be treated as a true tense and that its future morpheme is an anti-PAST polarity item. It also provides a syntactic interpretation of a peculiar morphological aspect of English that it has no future form of the verb. To this end, Stowell's analysis is incorporated into the Minimalist program of Chomsky(1995). It is proposed that, unlike in other languages like French and Spanish, FUTURE in English is of an affix. This provides an intuitively correct description of why English verbs do not have a future form like other languages. The last but not least point which this paper will discuss is that Ogihara (1995a)'s claim that the referential theory of tensed sentences is inadequate is untenable.
The purpose of this paper is to show their distinctive auditory cues. Until now research of acoustic characteristics has been confined to simple experiments concerning the restricted conditions. Therefore this paper examines all of the acoustic characteristics of the lax and tense Fricative Consonants and shows to how acoustic characteristics can be used to differentiate lax and tense Fricative Consonants. The results of this paper are (a) auditory cues are especially important if there is a large difference between acoustic characteristics, (b) the lax and tense Fricative Consonant's distinctive auditory cues contain a hierarchy, and (c) there is a different hierarchy between CV and VCV.
A video-work story analysis system based on emotional state measurement includes a content provision unit which provides story content of a video-work, a display unit which displays content provided by the content provision unit, an emotional state measurement unit which measures a tense-relaxed emotional state of a viewer viewing the displayed story content, a story pattern analysis unit which analyzes the tense-relaxed emotional state measured from the emotional state measurement unit according to a scene in the story content provided by the content provision unit, and a story pattern display unit which prints out an analysis result or displays the analysis result as an image. The emotional state measurement unit measures a tense or relaxed emotional state through one or more analyses among a brainwave analysis, a vital sign analysis, or an ocular state analysis. A writer may obtain support in an additional scenario modification work, and an investor may obtain support in making a decision through the above description. Furthermore, the video-work story analysis system and analysis method based on emotional state measurement may extract a particular pattern with respect to a change in an emotional state of a viewer, compile statistics, and analyze a correlation between a story and an emotional state.
In this paper, I attempt to define the semantics of cikum 'now' in Korean. To define it precisely, we need to look at how it interacts with different aspectual classes of verbs and with the semantics of tenses and aspects. In doing this we need to define the semantics of tenses and aspects. Here we run into the question of whether ess is a tense marker or an aspect marker. I assume that it is ambiguous. There are still cases where it is not clear whether ess is used as a tense marker or an aspect marker in an actual sentence. I discuss two such cases: one in which it is used with verbs like tochakha 'arrive' which have no salient resulting states, and one in which a state verb is used with cikum-kkaci 'until now'. The semantics of cikum can be defined differently depending on whether ess is a tense or an aspect. By discussing ko iss, which is an imperfect marker, I conclude that cikum means ${\lambda}P{\lambda}i[u{\subseteq}i{\wedge}P(i)]$, that is, a relation between a set of times which include an utterance time and a set of properties of times.
This study explored the relationship between accurate vowel production and proficiency levels in L2 English produced by Korean EFL adult learners. To this end, nine English vowels /i, ɪ, ɛ, æ, ʌ, ɔ, ɑ, ʊ, u/ were selected and adjacent vowels paired up (e.g., /i/-/ɪ/, /u/-/ʊ/, /ɛ/-/æ/, /ʌ/-/ɔ/, /ɔ/-/ɑ/). The spectral features of the pairs were measured instrumentally, namely F1 (indicating tongue height) and F2 (indicating tongue backness). Meanwhile, the durations as well as spectral features of the tense and lax counterparts in /i/-/ɪ/ and /u/-/ʊ/ were measured, as both temporal and spectral features are important in distinguishing them. The findings of this study confirm that higher-rated speakers were better able to distinguish the contrasts in the front vowel pairs /i/-/ɪ/ and /ɛ/-/æ/ than lower-rated learners, but in the central and back vowel pairs /u/-/ʊ/and /ʌ/-/ɔ/ (though not /ɔ/-/ɑ/), Korean EFL learners generally showed difficulty distinguishing adjacent vowels with spectral cues. On the other hand, the durations of the tense and lax vowels showed that the lower-rated speakers were less able to use the temporal feature to differentiate tense vowels from their lax counterparts, unlike previous studies that found that in general Korean learners depend excessively on the temporal cue to distinguish tense and lax vowels.

The primary aim of this paper is to discuss the historical development or grammaticalization of English adverbial -ly suffix and provide a diachronic analysis of manner adverbs and sentence adverbs from the perspective of secondary grammaticalization. The grammaticalization includes both the primary grammaticalization from a lexical to a grammatical and the secondary grammaticalization from a less grammatical to a more grammatical status. The emergence of the manner adverbs is due to the primary grammaticalization from OE adjectival suffix -lic to ME adverbial suffix -ly. In contrast, the emergence of sentence adverbs is due to the secondary grammaticalization from manner adverbs in VP domain to sentence adverbs in TP domain with grammatical features of tense and modality. This paper concludes that the secondary grammaticalization of the English adverbial -ly suffix includes the change from manner adverbs to sentence adverbs which obtain a new grammatical function of tense and modality.
This study was designed to determine (1) the effects of the following stop consonant on the vowel length in isolated bi-syllabic words, (2) the mechanism which renders vowels longer in duration before lax stops than tense stops, (3) where the aspiratory interval is included, in the vowel portion or the preceding consonantal portion and (4) the influence of the preceding consonants upon the duration of the following vowel. Measurements were made of five timing variables on acoustic signals as three native Korean speakers uttered isolated bi-syllabic /VCV/ words in which the vowel was identical, /$\alpha$/, and the C slot was filled with bilabial stops. Findings: (1) the vowel length before the lax stops was significantly longer than before the tense stops, while the difference in the vowel duration between the tense stops was insignificant or negligible, (2) the vowel length varied as a function of the articulatory force of the following consonants, regardless of the phonological unit of syllable, (3) The aspiratory interval is interpreted as a portion of the preceding consonant and (4) The effects of the preceding consonants on the final vowel length were not rule-governed.
Two identical experiments are conducted at a six month interval in order to examine the VOT and its effect on the whole syllable duration or the rest portion of the syllable in Busan Korean. Just like the general characteristics of VOT, the aspirated stops consistently exhibit the longest VOT while tense stops have the shortest VOT. However, alveolar stops exhibit shorter VOT than labial stops, and it is contrary to the previous studies which claim that VOT values of labial stops are shorter than VOT values of alveolar stops. Moreover, there is a relationship between VOT and syllable/VC duration across stops. While VOT and syllable/VC duration have symmetric relationship for the aspirated velar and bilabial stops, other lax and tense stops exhibit the inverse relationship between the VOT and syllable/VC duration.
