Rainwater has been used in many countries as a way of minimizing water availability problems. Rainwater harvesting system (RHS) has been successfully implemented as alternative water supply sources even in Korea. Although RHS is an effective alternative to water supply, its efficiency is often heavily influenced by temporal distribution of rainfall. Since natural precipitation is a random process and has probabilistic characteristics, it will be more appropriate to describe these probabilistic features of rainfall and its relationship with design storage capacity as well as supply deficit of RHS. This study presents the methodology to establish the relationships between storage capacities and deficit rates using probability distributions. In this study, the real three-story building was considered and nine scenaries were developed because the daily water usage pattern of the study one was not identified. GEV, Gumbel and the generalized logistic distribution ware selected according to the results of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Chi-Squared test. As a result, a set of curves describing the relationships under different exceedance probabilities were generated as references to RHS storage design. In case of the study building, the deficit rate becomes larger as return period increases and will not increase any more if the storage capacity becomes the appropriate quantity. The uncertainties between design storage and the deficit can be more understood through this study on the probabilistic relationships between storage capacities and deficit rates.

Using kinematic wave equation, the influence of moving rainstorms to runoff was analysised with a focus on watershed shapes and rainfall distribution types. Watershed shapes used are the oblong, square and elongated shape, and the distribution types of moving storms used are uniform, advanced and intermediate type. The runoff hydrographs according to the rainfall distribution types were simulated and the characteristics were explored for the storms moving down, up and cross the watershed with various velocity. And the hydrographs were compared in the case of varing the rainstorm intensity and varing the rainstorm length in order to make the same total runoff volume. When the rainstorm intensity was varied the shape, peak time and peak runoff of a runoff hydrograph are significantly influenced by spatial and temporal variability in rainfall and watershed shapes. The peak time of down and upstream moving strorms appeared latest in the case of the elongated shape basin, meanwhile at cross stream moving storms, the peak time of elongated shape basin is earlier than the others. For storms moving downstream peak time was more delayed than for other storm direction in the case of elongated watershed. The runoff volume and time base of the hydrograph decreased with the increasing storm speed.

According to recent frequent local flash flood due to climate change, the very short-term rainfall forecast using remotely sensed rainfall like radar is necessary to establish. This research is to evaluate the feasibility of GIS-based distributed model coupled with radar rainfall, which can express temporal and spatial distribution, for multipurpose dam operation during flood season. $Vflo^{TM}$ model was used as physically based distributed hydrologic model. The study area was Yongdam dam basin ($930\;km^2$) and the 3 storm events of local convective rainfall in August 2005, and the typhoon.Ewiniar.and.Bilis.collected from Jindo radar was adopted for runoff simulation. Distributed rainfall consistent with hydrologic model grid resolution was generated by using K-RainVieux, pre-processor program for radar rainfall. The local bias correction for original radar rainfall shows reasonable results of which the percent error from the gauge observation is less than 2% and the bias value is $0.886{\sim}0.908$. The parameters for the $Vflo^{TM}$ were estimated from basic GIS data such as DEM, land cover and soil map. As a result of the 3 events of multiple peak hydrographs, the bias of total accumulated runoff and peak flow is less than 20%, which can provide a reasonable base for building operational real-time short-term rainfall-runoff forecast system.
In the past, the design flow of the urban storm drainage systems has been used largely on a basis of empirical and experience, and the rational formula one of empirical method has been widely used for our country, as well as world wide. But the empirical method has insufficient factor because minimal consideration is given to the relationship of the parameters in the equation to the processes being considered, and considerable use of experience and judgment in setting values to the coefficients in the equation is made. The postcomputer era of hydrology has brought an acceleration development of mathematical methods, thus mathematical models are methods which will greatly increase our understanding in hydrology. On this study, a simple mathematical model of urban presented by British Road Research Laboratory is tested on urban watersheds in Ju An Ju Gong Apartment. The basin is located in Kan Seog Dong, Inchon. The model produces a runoff hydrograph by applying rain all to only the directly connected impervious area of the basin. To apply this model the basin is divided into contributing areas or subbasins. With this information the time area for contributing is derived. The rainfall hyetograph to design storm for the basin flow has been obtained by determination of total rainfall and the temporal distribution of that rainfall determined on the basis of Huff's method form historical rainfall data of the basin. The inflows from several subbaisns are successively routed down the network of reaches from the upstream end to the outlet. A simple storage routing technique is used which involves the use of the Manning equation to compute the stage discharge curve for the cross-section in question. To apply the model to a basin, the pattern of impervious areas must be known in detail, as well as the slopes and sizes of all surface and subsurface drains.
The objective of this study is to develop the data driven model for the flood forecasting that are improved the problems of the existing hydrological model for flood forecasting in medium and small streams. Neuro-Fuzzy flood forecasting model which linked the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference theory with neural network, that can forecast flood only by using the rainfall and flood level and discharge data without using lots of physical data that are necessary in existing hydrological rainfall-runoff model is established. The accuracy of flood forecasting using this model is determined by temporal distribution and number of used rainfall and water level as input data. So first of all, the various combinations of input data were constructed by using rainfall and water level to select optimal input data combination for applying Neuro-Fuzzy flood forecasting model. The forecasting results of each combination are compared and optimal input data combination for real-time flood forecasting is determined.

An analog to digital converter(: ADC) has been designed to extract video signals of marine X-band radar and convert to digital signals in order to produce rainfall information. X-band weather radars are suitable for high temporal-spatial resolution observations of rainfall over local ranges but they are very expensive and require professional management. The marine radars with 10-2 cost facilitate data collection and management as well as economic benefits. To validate the usefulness of the developed ADC, comparative observations were made with weather radar for short term precipitation cases. The rainfall distribution of marine radar observations are consistent with that of weather radar within a radius of 15 km. This demonstrates the usability of marine radar for rainfall observations.
Landslides are one of the most common natural hazards causing significant damage and casualties every year. In Korea, the increasing trend in landslide occurrence in recent decades, caused by climate change, has set off an alarm for researchers to find more reliable methods for landslide prediction. Therefore, an accurate landslide-susceptibility assessment is fundamental for preventing landslides and minimizing damages. However, analyzing the stability of a natural slope is not an easy task because it depends on numerous factors such as those related to vegetation, soil properties, soil moisture distribution, the amount and duration of rainfall, earthquakes, etc. A variety of different methods and techniques for evaluating landslide susceptibility have been proposed, but up to now no specific method or technique has been accepted as the standard method because it is very difficult to assess different methods with entirely different intrinsic and extrinsic data. Landslide prediction methods can fall into three categories: empirical, statistical, and physical approaches. This paper reviews previous research and surveys three groups of landslide prediction methods.

North Korea is one of the most vulnerable countries of the world for drought but still it is difficult to find scientific researches for understanding of the drought characteristics. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution of meterological drought severity and classified the drought development types in North Korea. All eleven drought indices were tested such as seasonal rainfall, PDS, SPI and so on, and then drew the drought risk map by each indicator using frequency analysis and GIS(Geographic Information Systems) for twenty one meteorological stations. In addition meteorological drought characteristics in North Korea was classified to six patterns on Si/Gun administrative units using cluster analysis on the drought indicators. The cluster III has the strongly drought-resistant area due to sufficient rainfall and the cluster V was considered as the most drought-vulnerable area, Pungsan and Sinpo, because of the severest drought condition for eight drought indicators. The results of this study are expected to be provided for the basic understanding of regionalized drought severity and characteristics confronting the risk of drought from climate variations in North Korea.

Various methods have been applied for the research to model the relationship between rainfall-runoff, which shows a strong nonlinearity. In particular, most researches to model the relationship between rainfall-runoff using artificial neural networks have used back propagation algorithm (BPA), Levenberg Marquardt (LV) and radial basis function (RBF). and They have been proved to be superior in representing the relationship between input and output showing strong nonlinearity and to be highly adaptable to rapid or significant changes in data. The theory of artificial neural networks is utilized not only for prediction but also for classifying the patterns of data and analyzing the characteristics of the patterns. Thus, the present study applied self?organizing map (SOM) based on Kohonen's network theory in order to classify the patterns of rainfall-runoff process and analyze the patterns. The results from the method proposed in the present study revealed that the method could classify the patterns of rainfall in consideration of irregular changes of temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall. In addition, according to the results from the analysis the patterns between rainfall-runoff, seven patterns of rainfall-runoff relationship with strong nonlinearity were identified by SOM.

The river master plan was established every 10 years in Korea. The basin characteristics of 62 small and medium size rivers of which master plans were recently established during the past three years in Gyeonggi-do were investigated, and design rainfalls and design floods in the past and the latest were compared and analyzed. It was predicted that basin data and flood estimating method changed design flood. The quantitative amount of design floods were analyzed for 6 basins like Gungunchen etc. As the results, the increasing factors of design flood were the application of critical duration time, temporal time of rainfall and the increase of CN value. The decreasing factors of design flood were the application of Huff's rainfall distribution instead of Mononobe one and the ARF. The application of critical duration time increased flood about 60% whereas the application of Huff's rainfall distribution method estimated less flood than Mononobe about 62%. Considering critical duration time and changing rainfall distribution were the most important factors of increasing or decreasing design flood. However, trends of flood variation were differently analyzed by factors in 6 basins because characteristics of topography, weather, hydrology and hydraulic were different, now that correlations were not found between factors and flood variation. Flood variation is evaluated by complex effects of factors so new flood recalculated by reasonable methods should be considered as design flood.
