  • In this research, Octacosane($C_{28}H_{58}$) and Sodium Acetate Trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) were selected as latent heat storage materials to store off-peak electricity or waste heat of an industrial plant. Experimental analyses were performed in terms of the variation of phase change temperature and latent heat, phase change stability for the long term utilization. The results were as follows. 1. The phase change temperatures of industrial grade Octacosane and Sodium Acetate Trihydrate were $60.7^{\circ}C$ and $57.4^{\circ}C$, the latent heat were 60.6kcal/kg and 51.1kcal/kg respectively. 2. The latent heat quantity of Octacosane was decreased with the increasing number of phase change cycles. It decreased from 60.6kcal/kg to 47.2kcal/kg upto 200 cycles and then no variation was observed after 200 cycles. 3. To prevent the supercooling of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate, the nucleating agent, Sodium Pyrophosphate Decahydrate of 3 wt% was added, and then the supercooling temperature (Tm-Tsc) was decreased from $25.7^{\circ}C$ to $1^{\circ}C$. The phase separation was disappeared by the addition of CMC-Na of 3 wt% as a thickener. It was found that the optimal quantity of nucleating agent and thickener was 4wt% considering the stability of SAT as a latent heat storage material. 4. The phase change temperature of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) was adjusted from 57.4 to $46.2^{\circ}C$ by the addition of UREA. And then the latent heat quantity was decreased from 51.1 to 38.3kcal/kg. 5. When the heat storage capacities between the sensible and latent heat storage materials were analyzed and compared in heating process from 30 to $90^{\circ}C$, the heat storage capacity of Octacosane was 2.45 times larger than water and 12.5 times than granite at $60.7^{\circ}C$, and the heat storage capacity of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate was 2.53 times larger than water and 12.91 times than granite at $57.4^{\circ}C$.

  • The luminescence properties of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown on $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ buffer layers have been studied by using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL measurements. A$1-{\mu}m$ thick $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ buffer layers were deposited on a 500 nm thick GaAs layer, followed by the deposition of the InGaAs/InAlAs MQWs. In order to investigate the effects of InAlAs buffer layer on the optical properties of the MQWs, four different temperature sequences are used for the growth of InAlAs buffer layer. The growth temperature for InAlAs buffer layer was varied from 320^{\circ}C to $580^{\circ}C$. The MQWs consist of three $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}$As wells with different well thicknesses (2.5 nm, 4.0 nm, and 6.0 nm thick) and 10 nm thick $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}$As barriers. The PL spectra from the MQWs with InAlAs layer grown at lower temperature range ($320-580^{\circ}C$) showed strong peaks from 4 nm QW and 6 nm QW. However, for the MQWs with InAlAs buffer grown at higher temperature range ($320-480^{\circ}C$), the PL spectra only showed a strong peak from 6 nm QW. The strongest PL intensity was obtained from the MQWs with InAlAs layer grown at the fixed temperature of $480^{\circ}C$, while the MQWs with buffer layer grown at higher temperature from $530^{\circ}C$ to $580^{\circ}C$ showed the weakest PL intensity. From the emission wavelength dependence of PL decay times, the fast and slow decay times may be related to the recombination of carriers in the 4 nm QW and 6 nm QW, respectively. These results indicated that the growth temperatures of InAlAs layer affect the structural and optical properties of the MQWs.

  • We have investigated optical and structural properties of $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN and $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N/GaN/Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N/GaN$ heterostructures (HSs) grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, by means of Hall measurement, high-resolution X-ray diffraction, and temperature- and excitation power-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. A strong GaN band edge emission and its longitudinal optical phonon replicas were observed for all the samples. At 10 K, a 2DEG-related PL peak located at ${\sim}\;3.445\;eV$ was observed for $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN HS, while two 2DEG peaks at ${\sim}\;3.42$ and ${\sim}\;3.445\;eV$ were observed for $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N/GaN/Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N/GaN$ HS due to the additional $Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N$ layers. Moreover, the emission intensity of the 2DEG peak was higher in $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N/GaN/Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N/GaN$ HS than in $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN HS probably due to an effective confinement of the photo-excited holes by the additional $Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N$ layers. The 2DEG-related emission intensity decreased with increasing temperature and disappeared at temperatures above 150 K. To investigate the origin of the new 2DEG peaks, the energy-band structure for multiple AlGaN/GaN HSs were simulated and compared with the experimental data. As a result, the observed high- and low-energy peaks of 2DEG can be attributed to the spatially-separated 2DEG emissions formed at different AlGaN/GaN heterointerfaces.

  • For the investigation of the quality loss of mulberry during distribution, the deterioration rate, microorganism growth, and sensory quality of mulberry kept at 20, 10 and $0^{\circ}C$, respectively, were investigated. Based on the results, the optimum temperature for extending the freshness of mulberry was examined in the temperature range of -1.5 to $1.5^{\circ}C$. The level of mold in the mulberry kept at 20 and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively, was much higher than that kept at $0^{\circ}C$. The quality of the mulberry deteriorated seriously after two days at $20^{\circ}C$, after six days at $10^{\circ}C$, and after 12 days at $0^{\circ}C$. The marketability of mulberry as determined via sensory evaluation was much more prolonged by decreasing the keeping temperature from 20 to $0^{\circ}C$. To extend the freshness of mulberry using these results, the optimum temperature was evaluated at the range of -1.5 to $1.5^{\circ}C$ for 25 days. During storage, the changes in the color and pH of the berry were not significantly different by storage temperature, but the microbial levels and deterioration rate increased in the order of 1.5, 0, and $-1.5^{\circ}C$. In particular, the firmness of the mulberry decreased rapidly at $1.5^{\circ}C$, showing a significant difference from the others. The titratable acidity and sugar contents decreased gradually at all the applied temperatures. The anthocyanin content decreased sharply at $1.5^{\circ}C$ but gently changed at $-1.5^{\circ}C$. Through the sensory results of this study, it was adjudged that the marketability of mulberry could be maintained about 0.7 times at $1.5^{\circ}C$ and 1.3 times at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ compared with the marketability at $0^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • To verify the multiplication of microorganisms on the surface of strawberries, the fate of E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ at different temperatures, times and strawberry extract concentrations were measured. The population of E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ rapidly increased by 7.36~7.78 log CFU/g at $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr and slowly increased by 6.49~8.49 log CFU/g at $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ for 48 hr. However, E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ did not grow at $10{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ on the surface of the strawberries, regardless of the contact times with the bacterial suspension. E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ reached 1.52~3.26 log CFU/g at $20^{\circ}C$ as the contact frequency increased from two to six times. The contact frequencies did not significantly differ. In the case of the six-time contact on the surface of the strawberry at 25 and $30^{\circ}C$, the E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ increased by 5.17 and 5.01 log CFU/g. The effects of the strawberry extracts on the growth of E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ showed that sterilization and non-sterilization do not affect the growth of microorganisms for 96 hr. In the minimal broth, the growth of E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ increased by 1 log CFU/g for 96 hr. In less than 50 percent of the strawberry extracts, the growth rate of E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ was higher than in the control and increased by 4 and 5 log CFU/g at 50 and 25 percent of strawberry extracts, respectively. Therefore, E. coli $DH5{\alpha}::gfp$ can multiply and survive on the surface of strawberries when it comes into contact with the fruit extract.

  • In order to improve the storage stability of spray and freeze dried red ginseng extract powder packed in a bottle, the water vapor permeability of Al-foil laminate paper used for cap closure and shelf life of those products on various storage temperatures and relative humidities were investigated. The thickness of the laminate paper was $93{\pm}3\:{\mu}m$ and its physical properties were equal to standard of ASTM (B-377-66) The absorption rate of the freeze dried powder was 2-6 times greater than that of the spray dried powder at $37^{\circ}C$. Therefore it was considered that the laminate could be used for cap closures for the spray dried powder but unsuitable for the freeze dried powder. The shelf life of the spray dried powder was longer than that of the freeze-dried powder at $37^{\circ}C$.

  • Chungkook-jang Koji was fermented with rice straw at $40^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours. The changes of proximate composition, pH, titrable acidity, nitrogen compounds, protease activity and free-amino acids during the fermentation were investigated. Moisture, lipid and protein contents remained essentially unchanged during the fermentation. The pH was gradually increased from 6.4 to 7.46 and 7.82 at $40^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C$, respectively, after 72 hour fermentation. Amino type and water soluble nitrogen increased as fermentation progressed. however, the former slightly decreased after 60 hour fermentation. Chungkook-jang fermented at $40^{\circ}C$ showed somewhat higher protease activity than $50^{\circ}C$. However, protease activity at both fermentation temperatures showed the same trend; that is, it increased until 48 hour fermentation and thereafter decrease. Free amino acid content of Chung-kook-jang after 72 hour fermentation at $40^{\circ}C$ was 6 times greater than that of the steamed soybean, while it was 2.5 times greater at $50^{\circ}C$. Based on these results. it seems that the optimum fermentation conditions for Chungkook-jang were $40^{\circ}C$ and 72 hours.

  • To investigate the preservability of Tongil, three types(rough, brown and milled rice) of Tongil and the common variety (being composed of typical varieties) in Korea were stored at a ambient and a low temperature $(15^{\circ}C)$ warehouse from April to October of each year for three years (1972-1974). The results obtained are described as follows; 1) Temperatures of atmosphere and the natural temperature warehouse changed in the same way. 2) Similar changes of relative humidity were observed in atmosphere and both warehouses. 3) Equilibrium moisture content of Tongil at $25^{\circ}C$ was 0.55 % lower in rough and brown rice. 0.33% lower in milled rice than each type of the common variety. 4) Weight loss rate in the natural temperature storage and in the low temperature storage was 1.35% and 0.74% after 6 month storage. 5) The change of fat acidity in browe rice was greater than any others (rough and milled rice). 6) Hardness of Tongil was 1.64kg higher than that of the common variety. 7) Germination rate was about the same during the low temperature storage, but that of brown of the natural temperature storage was abruptly decreased to $23%{\sim}37%$ after August. As a result, it is possible Tongil is applicable to the long-term storage of rice due to Tongil's superior preservability.

  • Forage grasses and legumes ar$\varepsilon$ the mam component of livestock diets in Canada. There are over 30 million ha of grassland in Canada and there is a large, undeveloped land base in fringe areas suitable for forage production. The short growing s season limits the grassland farming to the southern p parts of Canada. The win!er season is long and in most parts of Canada cold temperatures, fr$\varepsilon$ezmg, and thawing, and diseases exert sever$\varepsilon$ stress on overwintering forage plants. The development of persistent cultivars is essential for sustained production particularly in the fringe areas with short growmg s$\varepsilon$ason. The seasonality of dry matter production is a result of high growth rates in early summ$\varepsilon$r and low dry matter accumulation in late summer and fall. Innovative management practIces a and cultivars with improved regrowth capacity are n necessary to overcome such skewed production pattern and to extend effiectlVe grazmg season l Improved pasture production is an important part of reducing costs in livestock operations and remaining competitive. It is suggested that applying available technology would increase pasture productivity and reduce d$\varepsilon$pendence on stored feeds thus improving profitability of small producers in particeular. Reducing nutrient losses during harv$\varepsilon$stmg, s storage, and feeding is essential for improved production efficiency during confinement. The devclopment of low cost and labor saving methods of ensiling is critical for improved efficiency and profitability of forage based enterprises Livestock industries must respond to consumer preferences for low fat and cholesterol foods. Research and development of entire production systems is emphasized for dev$\varepsilon$loping viabl$\varepsilon$ enterprises. It is increasingly difficult to secure resources for r$\varepsilon$search, education, and extension, and alliane$\varepsilon$s and cooperation must expand among organizations with interests in forage based livestock systems.

  • This experiment was designed to gain information on factors affecting stubble death of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) during the first rainy season. According to the experimental plan, the effects of sowing methods, drainages and cutting dates on the stubble carbohydrate content of orchardgrass, available soil moisture content of experimental plots, temperatures at the ground level and in the soil, and relative light intensity and humidity at the base of orchardgrass canopy were measured during the rainy season. The carbohydrate content of orchardgrass was sharply decreased to 2.9 % at 3rd day after cutting in the plots cut before rainy season and a gradural recovery was noted following the sharp reduction, but in the plots cut after rainy season, orchardgrass showed 5.5% of carbohydrate content before cutting and 3.0% at the 3rd day after cutting. The same pattern in both carbohydrate reduction and recovery was found between two cutting treatments. The available soil moisture content in the plots cut before rainy season was slightly higher than that in the plots cut after rainy season. But after the rainy season, the available soil moisture content in the plots cut after rainy season was higher than that in the plots cut before rainy season. Soil temperature at lOcm depths in the plots cut before rainy season was higher than that in the plots cut after rainy season. Daily maximum air temperature at the ground level in the plots cut before rainy season was higher than that in the plots cut after rainy season and changeable. Relative humidity at the ground level was below 70% in the plots cut before rainy season, but 75 to 90 % was observed in the plots cut after rainy season. Relative light intensity at the ground level in the plots cut before rainy season was much higher, recorded 50 to 90 %, than that in the plots cut after rainy season showing less than 10%. The results of this study suggest that the stubble death of orchardgrass during the rainy season is due to plant diseases influenced by a decrease of light penetration and increase of relative humidity at the base of the grass canopy.
