An analysis program for the evaluation of pressure vessel integrity under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) is developed. For given material properties and transient history such as temperature and pressure, the stress distribution is calculated and then stress intensity factors are obtained for a wide range of crack sizes. The stress intensity factors are compared with the fracture toughness to check if cracking is expected to occur during the transient. Using this program a round robin problem of PTS during a small break loss of coolant transient has been analyzed as a part of the international comparative assessment study. The allowable maximum reference nil-ductility transition temperatures are determined for various crack sizes.

As one of zero-expansion coefficient materials $Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics was prepared and the thermal shock-resistance was investigated by using DV-X analysis. In this report the mechanism of thermal shock-resistance and low mechanical strength.
Detonation characteristics of acetylene were studied behind reflected shock waves in the temperature range 800-1350 K by monitoring OH emission and pressure profiles. For a comprehensive measurement of ignition delay time, the mixture composition was varied in a wide range of Ar mole % was varied from 0.625 to 2.5 in stoichiometric ratio of C2H2-O2-Ar. A computer simulation study was also performed to elucidate the important elementary steps determining ignition behavior. The 33-reaction mechanism provides a good agreement in delay time between the observed and the calculated ones.

Methylovorus sp. strain SS1 DSM 11726 was found to grow continuously when it was transferred from 30$\^{C}$ to 40$\^{C}$ and 43$\^{C}$. A shift in growth temperature from 30$\^{C}$ to 45$\^{C}$, 47$\^{C}$ and 50$\^{C}$ reduced the viability of the cell population by more than 10$^2$, 10$^3$and 10$\^$5/ folds, respectively, after 1h cultivation. Cells transferred to 47$\^{C}$ and 50$\^{C}$ after preincubation for 15 min at 43$\^{C}$, however, exhibited 10-fold increase in viability. It was found that incubation for 15 min at 40$\^{C}$ of Methylovorus sp. strain SSl grown at 30$\^{C}$ was sufficient to accelerate the synthesis of a specific subset of proteins. The major heat shock proteins had apparent molecular masses of 90, 70, 66, 60, and 58 kDA. The 60 and 58 kDa proteins were found to cross-react with the antiserum raised against GroEL protein. The heat shock response persisted for over 1h. The shock proteins were stable for 90 min in the cell. Exposure of the cells to methanol induced proteins identical to the heat shock proteins. Addition of ethanol induced a unique protein with a molecular mass of about 40 kDa in addition to the heat-induced proteins. The proteins induced in paraquat-treated cells were different from the heat shock proteins, except the 70 and 60 kDa proteins.
For non-linear solution of the Boltzmann equation, the cumulant moment method has been studied. To apply the method to the normal shock wave problem, we restricted ourselves to the monatomic Maxwell molecular gases. The method is based on the iterative approach developed by Maxwell-Ikenberry-Truesdell (MIT). The original MIT approach employs the equilibrium distribution function for the initial values in beginning the iteration. In the present work, we use the Mott-Smith bimodal distribution function to calculate the initial values and follow the MIT iteration procedure. Calculations have been carried out up to the second iteration for the profiles of density, temperature, stress, heat flux, and shock thickness of strong shocks, including the weak shock thickness of Mach range less than 1.4. The first iteration gives a simple analytic expression for the shock profile, and the weak shock thickness limiting law which is in exact accord with the Navier-Stokes theory. The second iteration shows that the calculated strong shock profiles are consistent with the Monte Carlo values quantitatively.
Jet aviation fuel is one of liquid fuel which are used in aircraft engines. Korean domestic jet fuel, called Jet A-1, is tested for measurement of ignition delay time by using a shock tube manufactured recently. The temperature varies from 680 to 1250 K and the pressure and equivalence ratio of Jet A-1/air are fixed 20 atm and 1.0, respectively, for this experiment. The ignition delay time data of Jet A-1 are compared with those of Jet A, which has similar properties to Jet A-1. The behavior of negative-temperature-coefficient (NTC) is observed in the temperature range 750-900 K. In addition, ignition delay time of iso-octane is measured, which is one of the surrogate components for jet aviation fuel. The experimental data are compared and validated with the previous results from the literatures. A surrogate fuel for the present Jet A-1 consists of 45.2% n-dodecane, 32.1% iso-octane, and 22.7% 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. The predicted ignition delay time for the surrogate agrees well with the measured one for Jet A-1.
Experimental study of the deterioration of high-temperature rock subjected to rapid cooling is essential for thermal engineering applications. To evaluate the influence of thermal shock on heated granite with different temperatures, laboratory tests were conducted to record the changes in the physical properties of granite specimens and the dynamic mechanical characteristics of granite after rapid cooling were experimentally investigated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that there are threshold temperatures ($500-600^{\circ}C$) for variations in density, porosity, and P-wave velocity of granite with increasing treatment temperature. The stress-strain curves of $500-1000^{\circ}C$ show the brittle-plastic transition of tested granite specimens. It was also found that in the temperature range of $200-400^{\circ}C$, the through-cracks induced by rapid cooling have a decisive influence on the failure pattern of rock specimens under dynamic load. Moreover, the increase of crack density due to higher treatment temperature will result in the dilution of thermal shock effect for the rocks at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Eventually, a fitting formula was established to relate the dynamic peak strength of pretreated granite to the crack density, which is the exponential function.

Temperature change is one of the major environmental factors to influence human skin. However. the relationship between temperature and melanogenesis has received little attention. In the present study. we investigated the effects of temperature change including heat shock on melanogenesis using a mouse melanocyte cell line, Mel-Ab. Our results demonstrated that cells maintained at 37$^{\circ}C$ showed maximal melanin synthesis. (omitted)
The ignition of methane-oxygen mixtures highly diluted with argon was examined in the temperature range of 1516-1937 K behind a reflected shock wave. The ignition delay times were measured by monitoring pressure profiles and the total emissions at 5.0 cm from the end wall. It was found that the experimental result was correlated by the temperature and the concentrations of the gases. To complement the experiment, computer modeling study of methane oxidation was carried out using a GRI 1.2 mechanism.
