  • The ozone data is one of the important environmental data for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. In this article, the Autoregressive Error (ARE) model have been considered for analyzing the ozone data at the northern part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Uijeongbu monitoring site in Korea. The result showed that both overall and monthly ARE models are suited for describing the ozone concentration. In the ARE model, seven meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the as the explanatory variables for the ozone data set. The seven meteorological variables are daily maximum temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, rainfall, dew point temperature, steam pressure, and amount of cloud. The four air pollution explanatory variables are Sulfur dioxide(SO2), Nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Cobalt(CO), and Promethium 10(PM10). Also, the high level ozone data (over 80ppb) have been analyzed four ARE models, General ARE, HL ARE, PM10 add ARE, Temperature add ARE model. The result shows that the General ARE, HL ARE, and PM10 add ARE models are suited for describing the high level of ozone data.

  • LH has installed sashes to the balcony to save energy and increase residential space. Then, it is very difficult to protect a condensation of vapor on the walls in the winter time, because the space is closed and the wall surface temperature becomes very low in a balcony. We have tried to get the optimal thermal design methods to reduce the condensation on the walls. The one of the chosen method is to make holes on the walls, and then the condensation shall be reduce because the dew point temperature will be lower due to the effect of dehumidify. In this case, it is just necessary to find as like that how many holes should be perforated through the wall, what's their size, and where is their positions. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics was applied to analyze the temperature, the pressure and the velocity distribution for an incompressible flow in the balcony spaces. And field tests were also carried out to get the data to compare to the simulation results. Finally the design criteria of the ventilation holes in the balconies was suggested by analysis of the computer simulation models.

  • Since the surface temperature of the evaporating tube in an ammonia unit cooled is lower than the dew point of atmosphere, the moisture in the atmosphere condenses and the frost grows on the tube. The frost of liquid film decreases the heat transfer rate. The reliable analysis of the heat transfer is required for the prediction of the optimal design of the ammonia unit cooler. For the specific commercial model, the performance was numerical1y estimated for the variation of operating condition and geometric configuration. It is found that there exists an optimum range for the parameters such as mass flow rate of air and refrigerant, humidity, refrigerant quality, fin pitch, the number of step, the number of rows and the pattern of refrigerant path.

  • The International TOVS(TIROS Oprational Vertical Sounders) Process Package(ITPP-VI)is for a global usage, which needs a surface data to generate atmospheric soundings. If the initial input process in the ITPP-VI is not modified, it takes climatic surface data for producing sounding data in general. Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) is trying to improve the quality of TOVS sounding data using real-time synoptic observations and make a use weather prediction and analysis in various ways. Serval cases in this study show that TOVS retrieved meteolorogical parameters such as atmopheric temperature, dew point depression and geopotential heights used by synoptic surface observations can delineate more detailed atmospheric feature rather than those used by climate surface data. In addition, the collocated comparisons of TOVS synoptic retrieved parameters with radiosonde observations are performed statistically. TOVS retrieved fields with the synoptic surface analyzed data show smaller bias reatively than those with the climatic data and also reduced root mean square differences below 700 hPa as expected.

  • Cloud seeding experiment has been proposed as a way to alleviate severe air pollution problem because, if successful, artificially produced precipitation through cloud seeding could scavenge out some portion of air pollutants. As a first step to verify the practicality of such experiment, seedability of the clouds observed in Seoul is assessed by examining statistical characteristics of some relevant meteorological variables. Analyses of 9 years of Korea Meteorological Agency Seoul station data indicate that as PM10 mass concentration increases, cloud amount, liquid water path, and ice water path decrease, but the difference between temperature and dew point temperature tends to increase. Such finding suggests that cloud seeding becomes less feasible as air pollution becomes more severe in the Seoul metropolitan area, at least in a statistical sense. For some individual severe air pollution events, however, seedable clouds may exist and indeed cloud seeding experiments can be successful. Therefore, detailed investigation on cloud seedability for individual severe air pollution events are highly required to make a concrete assessment of cloud seeding as a way to alleviate severe air pollution problem.

  • The occurrence of white plume in the cooling tower is phenomenon that the steam in the air through the cooling tower fan is condensed again by the cold ambient air to become saturated moist air. Accordingly, this can cause many problems like spoiling landscape around the cooling tower, odor of ambient air, falling accident by frozenness in the winter, and traffic accident, etc. This study was to install the heat exchanger in the inside of the cooling tower in order to prevent the white plume phenomenon in the cooling tower without affecting the performance of cooling tower. In addition, this study was to discharge the part of cooling water into the atmosphere through the recirculation of heat exchanger after creating dry air by heating the saturated moist air to the dew point temperature. At that time, this study was to conduct the experimental study in order to secure the optimal design data to prevent the white plume in the cooling tower because it checked the dry·moist temperature and relative humidity in the inside·outside of cooling tower on the moist air, and evaluated the performance of the heat exchanger.

  • A simulation program using the mass transfer correlation was constructed to analyze 1-D simplified condensing flow across the tube bank. Higher efficiency was anticipated by reducing the flue gas temperature down below the dew point where the water vapor in the flue gas is condensed at the surface of the heat exchanger; that is, the heat transfer by the latent heat is added to that by the sensible heat. Thus, there can be an optimum operating condition to maximize the heat recovery from the flue gas. The temperature rises of the flue gas and the cooling water between the inlet and the outlet of the tube bank were compared with the experimental data reported previously. The predicted results agree well with the experimental data. Using this simulation program, the parametric studies have been conducted fur various operating conditions, such as the velocities and temperatures of the vapor/gas mixture and the cooling water, the number of the rows, and the conductivity of the wall material.

  • It is known that cold water appears and fog frequently forms in the southwest coastal waters of Korea in summer. The authors investigate the time and place. of cold water existence, and also whether the cold water affects the occurrence of fog formation. As a result, cold water begins to appear around Daeheugsando at the early summer. It gets colder with times and cold water area moves toward southwest of Jindo in mid-summer, then disappears in this area around mid-Oct. Fog mostly forms in April through August and most frequently occurs at Chukdo(Jindo) where sea surface temperature shows lower than that at the adjacent area. Accordingly it is taken that the cold water is considerably contributed to form the dense and frequent fog around Jindo area.

  • A hot-dip simulator was utilized to replicate abnormal coating buildup observed during line stops at galvanize lines, assessing the influence of processing conditions on buildup (up to 14 mm/side). Steel samples from 19 coils (comprising IF, BH, LCAK, HSLA, DP600-DP1180, Si: 0.006 - 0.8 wt%, P: 0.009 - 0.045 wt%) were examined to explore the phenomenon of heavy coating growth. It was discovered that heavy coating buildup (~3 mm/h) and rapid strip dissolution (~0.17 mm/h) in a GA or GI pot can manifest with specific combinations of steel chemistry and processing conditions. The results reveal the formation of a unique coating microstructure, characterized by a blend of bulky Zeta crystals and free Zn pockets/networks due to the "Sandlin" growth mechanism. Key variables contributing to abnormal coating growth include steel Si content, anneal temperature, dew point in heating and soaking furnaces, Zn pot temperature, Zn bath Al%, and cold-rolling reduction%. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco galvanize lines, an automatic online warning system for operators and special scheduling for incoming Si-bearing steels have been implemented, effectively preventing further heavy buildup occurrences.

  • The objective of this study is to the test applicability of SLURP on Soyanggang-dam watershed. The area of this watershed is $2,694km^2$ and mean elevation and slope is 650 m and $23^{\circ}$ respectively. Topographical parameters were derived from DEM using TOPAZ and SLURPAZ. NDVI was calculated from multi-temporal NOAA/AVHRR images. The daily meteorological data and hydrograph during $1999\~2001$ were selected for model calibration and performance tests. Weather elements (dew-point temperature, solar radiation, maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity) were required from the S meteorological stations near the study area. The model parameters of each land cover class were optimized by sensitivity analysis and SCE-UA method. Runoff rate shows $49.33\%\~64.06\%$. Simulated results during 4 years were estimated by Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and WMO volume error. Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency shows $0.61\~0.75$ and WMO volume error shows $6.1\%-18.8\%$.
