  • The thermochemical parameters for safe handling, storage, transport, operation and process design of flammable substances are explosive limit, flash point, autoignition temperature, minimum oxygen concentration, heat of combustion etc.. Explosive limit and autoignition temperature are the major physical properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosive limit and autoignition temperature of methane fur LNG process safety were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosive limits of methane recommended 4.8 vol$\%$ and 16 vol$\%$, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of methane with ignition sources recommended $540^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated cruicible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended about $1000^{\circ}C$ in the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of the lower explosive limits for methane are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • We have examined In order to compare each other from explosion and combustion characteristics about the dusts which collects from manufacturing process of wheat flour and cosmetics manufacturing process of functional Keratin removal soap at the small and medium enterprise style. We measured explosive pressure and explosive lower limit which follows in change of concentration change at the time of talc addition uses Hartman dust explosion apparatus, also measured weight loss and endothermic quantity uses DSC and TGA. The explosion test results show that increased explosive lower limit concentration and explosive pressure decreased by the increased ratio of the talc dust. And the DSC results show that heat flux and temperature decreased by the increased ratio of the talc dust. Also increased in raising temperature causes initial smoldering temperature to move towards low temperature section and the endothermic quantity increased on a large scale. Together the TGA results show that weight loss decreased by the increased ratio of the talc dust. From this research we have assured the successive dust explosion mechanism study will play a key role as a significant safety securing guideline against the dust explosion.

  • To investigate the tolerance limit and critical thermal maximum (CTM), behavioral responses of wild goldeye rockfish Sebastes thompsoni according to exposure to high water temperature were observed using a continuous behavior tracking system. As a result, behavioral index (BI) of S. thompsoni in each temperature (20.0, 25.0, and 30.0℃) showed a significant difference (p<0.05) when compared with the value measured in a stable condition of 15.0℃. The activity level of S. thompsoni exposed to 25.0℃ decreased sharply after 20 hours. Their rest time at the bottom of experiment chamber increased, and their normal swimming and metabolic activities were disturbed. In addition, at a high water temperature of 30.0℃, S. thompsoni reached the limit of resistance and showed a sub-lethal reaction of swimming behavior, with energy consumption in the body increased and all test organisms died. In conclusion, the eco-physiological response of S. thompsoni to water temperature varied greatly depending on the fluctuation range of the exposed temperature and the exposure time. In addition, the tolerance limit of S. thompsoni to high water temperature was predicted to be 25.0-30.0℃. The maximum critical thermal that had a great influence on the survival of this species was found to be around 30.0℃.

  • The usage of the correct combustion properties of the treated substance for the safety of the process is critical. For the safe handling of n-nonane being used in various ways in the chemical industry, the flash point and the autoignition temperature(AIT) of n-nonane was experimented. And, the explosion limit of n-nonane was calculated by using the flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of n-nonane by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $31^{\circ}C$ and $34^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-nonane by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $37^{\circ}C$ and $42^{\circ}C$. The AIT of n-nonane by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $210^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit by the measured flash point $31^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 0.87 vol%. And the upper explosion limit by the measured upper flash point $53^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 2.78 vol%. It was possible to predict lower explosion limit by using the experimental flash point or flash point in the literature.

  • Explosion limit and autoignition temperature are the major properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosion limit and autoignition temperature for safe handling of ethylene were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of ethylene recommended 2.6vol% and 36vol%, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of ethylene with ignition sources recommended $420^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated crucible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended about $800^{\circ}C$ in the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of the lower explosion limits for ethylene are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • Sheet metal forming of Mg alloy is usually performed at elevated temperature because of the low formability at room temperature. Therefore, strain rates affected with the forming temperature and speed must be considered as important factor about formability. Effects of process parameters such as various temperatures and forming speeds were investigated in circular cup deep drawing. From the experimental results, it is known that LDR (Limit Drawing Ratio) increase as the strain rate increase. On the contrary, the FLD (Forming Limit Diagram) shows lower value as faster strain rate. Therefore, anisotropy values are investigated according to the temperature and strain rates at each forming temperature. R-values also represent higher value as faster strain rate. It is known that the formability can be different with the deformation mode on warm forming of AZ31 alloy sheet.

  • This paper presents a moment-curvature method that accounts for the strength deterioration of steel at elevated temperature in estimating the response of steel beams exposed to fire. A modification to the EC4 method is proposed for a better estimation of the temperature distribution in the steel beam supporting a concrete slab. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results with established test results and the nonlinear finite element analysis results. The beam failure criterion based on a maximum strain of 0.02 is proposed to assess the limiting temperature as compared to the traditional criteria that rely on deflection limit or deflection rate. Extensive studies carried out on steel beams with various span lengths, load ratios, beam sizes and loading types show that the proposed failure criterion gives consistent results when compared to nonlinear finite element results.

  • This study is to investigate the effects of warm deep drawing with aluminum sheets of A1050-H16 and A5020-H32 for improving deep drawability. Experiments for producing circular cups and square cups were carried out for various working conditions, such as forming temperature and blank shapes. The limit drawing ratio(LDR) of 2.63 in warm deep drawing of circular cups in case of A5020-H32 sheet, whereas LDR of 2.25 in case of A1050-H16, could be obtained and the former was 1.4 times higher than the value at room temperature. The maximum relative drawing depth for square cups of A5020-H32 material was also about 1.92 times deeper than the depth drawn at room temperature. The effects of blank shape and forming temperature on drawability as well as thickness distribution of drawn cups were examined and discussed.

  • The maximum temperature limit at which liquid boils explosively is called the superheat limit of liquids. The superheat limits of hydrocarbon liquids and their mixtures were measured by the droplet explosion technique. Also the fully evaporated droplet at the superheat limit and subsequent bubble evolution from the fully evaporated droplet were visualized. The pressure wave emanating from the evaporating droplet and subsequent bubble evolution process were measured by a piezoelectric transducer.

  • For the safety design and operation of many gas process, it is necessary to know certain explosion limit, flash point, autoignition temperature (AIT) and minimum oxygen concentration of handling substances. Also it is necessary to know explosion limit at high temperature and pressure. In this study for the safe handling of hydrogen, explosion limit and AIT of combustion properties for hydrogen were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of hydrogen recommended 4.0 vol% and 77.0 vol%. Also the AIT of hydrogen with ignition sources recommended $400^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated crucible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended $640^{\circ}C$ at the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature and the pressure dependence of the explosion limits of hydrogen are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.
