  • Application of the supercritical condition in reactor core cooling needs to be properly justified based on the extreme level of parameters involved. Therefore, a numerical study is presented to compare the thermalhydraulic performance of supercritical and single-phase natural circulation loops under low-to-intermediate power levels. Carbon dioxide and water are selected as respective working fluids, operating under an identical set of conditions. Accordingly, a three-dimensional computational model was developed, and solved with an appropriate turbulence model and equations of state. Large asymmetry in velocity and temperature profiles was observed in a single cross section due to local buoyancy effect, which is more prominent for supercritical fluids. Mass flow rate in a supercritical loop increases with power until a maximum is reached, which subsequently corresponds to a rapid deterioration in heat transfer coefficient. That can be identified as the limit of operation for such loops to avoid a high temperature, and therefore, the use of a supercritical loop is suggested only until the appearance of such maxima. Flow-induced heat transfer deterioration can be delayed by increasing system pressure or lowering sink temperature. Bulk temperature level throughout the loop with water as working fluid is higher than supercritical carbon dioxide. This is until the heat transfer deterioration, and hence the use of a single-phase loop is prescribed beyond that limit.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on one dimensional excess enthalpy flame formed in a porous block. The investigation is undertaken in order to further the physical understanding of internal heat recirculation from reaction zone to unburned mixture. Two porous blocks are placed at both sides of combustion block to control the temperature distribution in the combustion block by means of radiation heat transfer. Mean temperature measurement reveals the general nature of the reaction zone in the porous material. It is conformed that the temperature of reaction zone exceeds the adiabatic flame temperature and the flame is stabilized at the out range of flammibility limit derived by conventional burner.

  • To improve the injection behavior of brushite cement, dense ${\beta}-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$ (${\beta}-TCP$) granules were added to the starting material. The spherical ${\beta}-TCP$ granules prepared by spray-drying and subsequent sintering at $1000{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ accounted for fractions of from 0.5 to 0.7 of the total ${\beta}-TCP$. The injection behavior was evaluated by measuring the injected mass divided by the loaded mass of paste in the syringe pump. The injected amount was increased with the increase in the fraction and sintering temperature of ${\beta}-TCP$ granules, except at $1200^{\circ}C$. The increase in the fraction of ${\beta}-TCP$ and its sintering temperature resulted in a decrease in the plastic limit, which is the volume of water required to liquefy the compact. The rest water could be utilized in the cement with the reduced plastic limit for improved injectability. The amounts of rest water assigned for powdery phase were estimated, and correlated with the injectability of paste.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of surface hardening treated Aluminum, Titanium alloy laminates, ballistic tests were conducted. In this paper, Anodized Al 5083-H131 alloy laminates and nitrified Ti (Gr.2) alloy laminates were used to achieve higher surface hardness. Surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro victor's hardness tester and thickness of surface hardening treated specimens was measured by video microscope. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_50$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability far complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_50$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_50$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests.

  • The partial substitution of LiTaO3 with Al2O3 caused the variation of dielectric properties and a lower melting temperature yielding an easier growth of single crystal. The lattice constants and Raman band broadening were measured for the LiTaO3 solid solution in which the cations of Li+ and Ta5+ were partially substituted by Al3+ cation. The LiTaO3 type limit phases were obtained. ; Li1.15Al0.45Ta0.7O3 for cationic excess Li1.15Al0.45Ta0.7O3 for stoichiometry Li0.85Al0.05TaO3 for cationic deficit. The second phase was formed beyond the solubility limit. The limit phase (Li0.85Al0.05TaO3) in the region of cationic deficit showed the lowest Cuire temperature of 61$0^{\circ}C$ and melting point of 152$0^{\circ}C$ compared to the solid solutions in other regions (TMp=1$650^{\circ}C$, Tc=69$0^{\circ}C$ for LiTaO3)

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(perforation modes) and resistance to perforation during ballistic impact of aluminum alloy plate, ballistic tests were conducted. Depth of penetration experiments with 5.56mm-diameter ball projectile launched into 25mm-thickness Al 5052-H34 targets were conducted. A powder gun launched the 3.55g projectiles at striking velocities between 0.6 and 1.0 km/s. radiography of the damaged targets showed different penetration modes as striking velocities increased. Resistance to perforation is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability for complete perforation. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by perforation modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete perforation during PTP tests. The effect of various impact velocity are studied with depth of penetration.

  • The flash point, explosion limits, autoignition temperature(AIT) are important combustible properties which need special concern in the chemical safety process that handle hazardous substances. For the evaluation of the flammable properties of n-butylacetate, this study was investigated the explosion limits of n-butylacetate in the reference data. The flash points, fire points and AIT by the ignition delay time of n-butylacetate were experimented. The lower flash points of n-butylacetate by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were $24^{\circ}C$ and $26^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-butylacetate using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $31^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. And the fire points of n-butylacetate by the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were measured $32^{\circ}C$ and $41^{\circ}C$. The AIT of n-butylacetate measured by the ASTM 659E tester was measured as $411^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit of lower flash point $24^{\circ}C$, which was measured by the Setaflash tester, was calculated to be 1.40 vol%. Also, the upper explosion limit of upper flash point $67^{\circ}C$ the Setaflash tester was calculated to be 12.5 vol%.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of Titanium alloy laminates and nitrified Titanium alloy laminates which were treated by PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) method, ballistic tests were conducted. Evaporation, sputtering, and ion plating are three kinds of PVD method. In this research, Ion plating was used to achieve higher surface hardness and surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro vicker's hardness tester. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. • Flame extinction and the chemistry of stoichiometric methane/air mixture were investigated numerically in the PSR(perfectly stirred reactor). For the study, PSR code was modified to be possible to unsteady calculation, and the sinusoidal fluctuation was subjected to the residence time. In the region of residence time far from the extinction limit, combustion mode was strongly dependent on the frequency. The low frequency excitation provided the quasi-steady behavior on the temperature and the concentrations of related species, but small variation of temperature was observed under high frequency. In the region of residence time near the extinction limit, the mixture subjected above 1 KHz was still reacting even though extinction had to be occurred under quasi-steady concept. The attenuation of extinction limit resulted from that chemical time was comparable to the flow time. The mean mole fractions of both NO and CO were almost same regardless of imposed frequency. However, the average mole fraction of $C_2H_2$ was decreased as increasing frequency, which implies that soot yield might be reduced at the higher frequency of flow excitation. The result provides the basic concept for flame stabilization, and it will be used to design a mild combustor.

  • In this article, vapor bubble nucleation in liquid and the evaporation process of a liquid droplet at its superheat limit were discussed from the viewpoint of molecular clustering (molecular cluster model for bubble nucleation). For the vapor bubble formation, the energy barrier against bubble nucleation was estimated by the molecular interaction due to the London dispersion force. Bubble nucleation by quantum tunneling in liquid helium under negative pressure near the absolute zero temperature and bubble nucleation on cavity free micro heaters were also presented as the homogenous nucleation processes.
