  • So many researchers have been interested in key success factors of technological start-ups. However, even previous studies have focussed on key success factors, as their findings have not been consistent. The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of technological start-ups' performance. The first aim of this study is intended to explores impact of entrepreneurs' characteristics, technological capabilities and network on firm performance. The second aim is to examine the causal relationships among latent variables with firm performance and with the use of path analysis. For this study, information has been gathered through surveys from entrepreneurs of 701 Korean technological start-up companies. As for analysis of the data, SPSS 18.0 OK for Windows and AMOS 4.0 were used for testing of hypothesis. Results of the hypothesis testing are summarized as follows: First, it was found that entrepreneurs' characteristics, technological capabilities and network had statistically significant influence on firm performance. Second, entrepreneurs' characteristics had significant influence on technological capabilities and network. Third, network did not have significant influence on technological capabilities. The major contributions of this study are (1) identifying the determinants on firm performance of technology-based start-ups by means of structural equation model, (2) verifying effects on firm performance of technology-based start-ups by the variables.

  • This paper analyses characteristics of the numerical controller industry in market formation and the flow of information between users and producers and the characteristic of knowledge base of the industry and discuses the difficulties derived, from the characteristics, in accumulation of technological capability. In market formation between users and producers, the multi-layered market is not favorable to domestic producers in that lower end market is not large enough to provide cradle market to them which produce inferior quality and lower price than imported products. The credibility of the performance of a product is different to prove until a critical mass of products are sold. Therefore gaining market share is deterred by unproven credibility of the performance of the product. The flow of information between users and producers is limited. The flow of information on users environment through mass market to producers is essential for improving credibility of a product. The nature of knowledge base is tacit and the means of knowledge transmission is limited. Technological licensing and reverse engineering, which have been conventional means of knowledge transmission, are not useful in the numerical controller industry. These characteristics provide conditions of vicious circle in accumulation of technological capability of the numerical controller industry. This paper argues that these characteristics of the industry challenge existing approach to R&D management and framework of science and technology policy.

  • The interactions between methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin (CD) and hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble associative polymers (HASE) were examined by a rheological technique. The effect of "capping" of hydrophobes by methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin on the viscosity and modulus was evaluated. Model HASE polymers with $C_1$to $C_{20}$ alkyl hydrophobic groups ethoxylated with~10 moles of ethylene-oxide (EO 10) and at concentrations up to 3 wt% were examined. With the addition of methylated $\beta$-CD, the steady shear viscosity profiles shift from a Newtonian profile to one that display a shear-thinning characteristic. Significant "capping" of the hydrophobes occurs for HASE polymers with $C_{l2}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{20}$ hydrophobes as reflected by the large reduction in the viscosity. However, the steady shear viscosity remains constant when the concentration of $\beta$-CD exceeds 1 wt%, suggesting that $\beta$-CD is not able to fully encapsulate the hydrophobes of the HASE polymer. The temperature variation plots indicate that the activation energy of the HASE-EO10-$C_{20}$ system and $\beta$-CD is dependent on the magnitude of the applied shear stress. These results further reinforce the hypothesis that $\beta$-CD is not able to completely remove all the hydrophobic associations.phobic associations.

  • Aiming at the high complexity of traditional single-channel demodulation algorithm for PCMA signals, a new demodulation algorithm based on neural network is proposed to reduce the complexity of demodulation in the system of non-cooperative PCMA communication. The demodulation network is trained in this paper, which combines the preprocessing module and decision module. Firstly, the preprocessing module is used to estimate the initial parameters, and the auxiliary signals are obtained by using the information of frequency offset estimation. Then, the time-frequency characteristic data of auxiliary signals are obtained, which is taken as the input data of the neural network to be trained. Finally, the decision module is used to output the demodulated bit sequence. Compared with traditional single-channel demodulation algorithms, the proposed algorithm does not need to go through all the possible values of transmit symbol pairs, which greatly reduces the complexity of demodulation. The simulation results show that the trained neural network can greatly extract the time-frequency characteristics of PCMA signals. The performance of the proposed algorithm is similar to that of PSP algorithm, but the complexity of demodulation can be greatly reduced through the proposed algorithm.

  • We evaluated the antibiotic susceptibilities, hemolytic activities, and technological properties of 36 Staphylococcus xylosus strains and 49 S. pseudoxylosus strains predominantly isolated from fermented soybean foods from Korea. Most of the strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, lincomycin, oxacillin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim. However, 23 strains exhibited potential phenotypic acquired resistance to erythromycin, lincomycin, and tetracycline. Based on breakpoint values for staphylococci from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, >30% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin and penicillin G, but the population distributions in minimum inhibitory concentration tests were clearly different from those expected for acquired resistance. None of the strains exhibited clear α- or β-hemolytic activity. S. xylosus and S. pseudoxylosus exhibited salt tolerance on agar medium containing 20% and 22% (w/v) NaCl, respectively. S. xylosus and S. pseudoxylosus strains possessed protease and lipase activities, which were affected by the NaCl concentration. Protease activity of S. pseudoxylosus was strain-specific, but lipase activity might be a characteristic of both species. This study confirms the potential of both species for use in high-salt soybean fermentation, but the safety and technological properties of strains must be determined to select suitable starter candidates.

  • Electrospun fibers of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were successfully prepared and applied as drug carriers for transdermal drug delivery system. Sodium Salicylate (SS) was the model drug and it was incorporated in the PVA fibers by adding 20 % of SS in a PVA solution prior to electrospinning. Electrospinning of SS-containing PVA solution resulted in the formation of beaded fibers. In order to control the rate of SS release and decrease water solubility of PVA, the SS-loaded electrospun PVA mat was cross-linked by either glutaraldehyde or glyoxal vapor. The morphology, thermal behavior, swelling behavior, release characteristic, kinetics of drug release and also toxicity of the cross-linked sample were investigated.

  • In this article, we generalize a well-known result of Hebisch and Weinert that states that a finite semidomain is either zerosumfree or a ring. Specifically, we show that the class of commutative semirings S such that S has nonzero characteristic and every zero-divisor of S is nilpotent can be partitioned into zerosumfree semirings and rings. In addition, we demonstrate that if S is a finite commutative semiring such that the set of zero-divisors of S forms a subtractive ideal of S, then either every zero-sum of S is nilpotent or S must be a ring. An example is given to establish the existence of semirings in this latter category with both nontrivial zero-sums and zero-divisors that are not nilpotent.

  • Recently, knowledge management(KM) has attracted increasing attention from academicians and practitioners alike. Amongst others, technological knowledge(TK) is considered principal asset of KM and R,&D organization of private firms selves as primary actor of KM. It is also noted that the notion of sectoral pattern of innovation highlights idiosyncratic differences across industrial sectors in terms of TK management. That is, knowledge contents, knowledge generation and How pattern are considerably different among industries. This paper first analyzes the correlation between structural of R&D organization and industrial(sectoral) type to identify the dominant structure of R&D organization for each industry. Second, sector-specific architectures of TK management system are proposed. According to structural characteristic of R&D-organization type, test-practice forms of TK management system are suggested in terms of such factors as knowledge contents(technology information), knowledge generation activities, and knowledge storage/retrieval modes.

  • Science & Technology(S&T) is the most important thing to attain competitiveness in the 21st century, Our traditional S&T policies have been focused on hardware infra structure. we should consider software of S&T to enhance effectiveness. S&T should be had a correct understanding method of the creation for S&T culture. It implies that S&T policy in the 21st century should consider nonmaterial factors which include social, human, environmental and culture. Under this background, The purpose of this paper is to seek new S&T policy in the 21st century. Therefor this paper deals with how we can prepare for the future S&T policy and classify the change of S&T policy of Korea and analyze the characteristic of each phase. This paper argues that all actors (for example, S&T personnel, corporate using S&T, general public) should participate in the process of S&T innovation since the 21st century is the generation of the general public S&T. Also this paper presented the expanded S&T policy Right S&T policy could leads to diffuse right S&T culture. Diffusing S&T culture could accomplish expanded S&T policy which was considered phases of culture and welfare.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics and change factors of technological cooperation networks in the automotive industry. Using Social Network Analysis (SNA) of 112,009 autonomous driving-related patents filed from 2000 to 2017 by major automotive firms in the world, we investigate the structure of the technological cooperation network. Network characteristics such as density are analyzed through structural characteristic analysis among the network analysis indicators. The structural characteristics of the technology cooperation network are confirmed through analysis of status characteristic indicators, such as the degree of centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality. Results show that car makers such as Toyota and Hyundai Motors, as well as parts suppliers such as Bosch and Continental, have high-performance technology developments related to autonomous driving. The structural characteristics of the network show that companies participating in cooperative networks for autonomous driving technology development have increased in number and are diversified, and all of the status characteristics indicators have decreased. This can be interpreted as an increasing number of horizontal and complementary forms of technological cooperation between firms. In addition, it was confirmed that the number of participants in the field of autonomous driving technology has increased, and the networks have become more complex.
