This study analyzed the processes of lesson plan, implementation, and reflection by a professional learning community with five teachers who were teaching second grade students in the same elementary school. The results of the study showed that the learning community helped the teachers prepare for a lesson effectively, enhance their teaching practices, and reflect on their teaching methods. However, the teachers had difficulties in re-designing and implementing the collaborative lesson plan in their classrooms and had a tendency to talk about their feelings about lessons rather than meaningful comments for subsequent lessons. The successes and difficulties revealed through this study are expected to provide us with directions of learning communities for improving teachers' professional development.
Recent reform movement in mathematics education has focused not only on the curriculum development but also on teachers' learning or professional development. Whereas various theoretical paradigms call for different programs of professional development for teachers, one of the common emphases is on the pedagogical content knowledge [PCK] which encompasses contents and methods to teach. Against this background, this study developed comprehensive instructional materials for the purpose of fostering PCK in mathematics for elementary school teachers with 17 essential learning themes such as fraction, plane geometry, and area. Each loaming theme was first summarized on the basis of literature reviews and surveys in terms of knowledge in mathematics contents, knowledge in teaching methods, and knowledge in students' mathematical understanding and learning. Each theme was then analyzed in detail on how it was represented in the national curriculum and its concomitant textbooks along with workbooks. Finally, this report included a reconstruction of one unit in textbooks per each learning theme, followed by teaching notes and suggestions from classroom implementation. This was intended for teachers to apply what they might loam from this material to their actual mathematics instruction. Given the page limit, this paper dealt only with the learning theme of ratio.
Recently there has been a high request for support for teachers' professional development and quality control to meet the demand of educational policy to introduce teacher evaluation, master teacher status, incentives for teacher competency, etc. It has been suggested that reeducation and support for professional development would be more effective to beginning teachers with a high developmental potential than to experienced teachers with routinized instruction. Since 2005, KICE-TLC has conducted research on the development of teacher supporting programs such as teaching consultation and pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) in school subjects. In line with the current education policy and previous research by KICE, this research has been conducted to meet the need for novice teacher induction by developing consulting program focused on PCK. The goal of this research was to (1) explore the in-depth meaning of PCK in light of teaching consultation, (2) conduct a preliminary study on how to develop teaching consulting programs for secondary beginning teachers, (3) develop teaching consulting programs focused on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and (4) suggest implications for educational policy regarding pre-service and in-service teachers' continuing professional development and support.

Research and national standards, such as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in the United States, promote the development and implementation of K-12 interdisciplinary curricula integrating the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science (STEM+CS). However, little research has explored how teachers provide epistemic support in interdisciplinary contexts or the factors that inform teachers' epistemic support in STEM+CS activities. The goal of this paper is to articulate how interdisciplinary instruction complicates epistemic knowledge and resources needed for teachers' instructional decision-making. Toward these ends, this paper builds upon existing models of teachers' instructional decision-making in individual STEM+CS disciplines to highlight specific challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary approaches on classroom epistemic supports. First, we offer considerations as to how teachers can provide epistemic support for students to engage in disciplinary practices across mathematics, science, engineering, and computer science. We then support these considerations using examples from our studies in elementary classrooms using integrated STEM+CS curriculum materials. We focus on an elementary school context, as elementary teachers necessarily integrate disciplines as part of their teaching practice when enacting NGSS-aligned curricula. Further, we argue that as STEM+CS interdisciplinary curricula in the form of NGSS-aligned, project-based units become more prevalent in elementary settings, careful attention and support needs to be given to help teachers not only engage their students in disciplinary practices across STEM+CS disciplines, but also to understand why and how these disciplinary practices should be used. Implications include recommendations for the design of professional learning experiences and curriculum materials.

The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about area of plane figure and how it was actualized in instruction. As an exploratory, qualitative, and comparative case study, 2 fifth-grade teachers were selected. Semi-structured interviews with the leachers were conducted in order to explore their PCK with regard to the area of plane figure. A total of 14 mathematics instructions were videotaped and transcribed. Teachers' PCK and classroom teaching practices were analyzed in detail into 3 categories: (a) knowledge of mathematics contents, (b) knowledge of students' understanding, and (c) knowledge of instructional methods. As such, this paper provided a detailed description on each teacher's PCK and her teaching practice. The results showed that teachers' PCK had a significant impact on instruction. The teacher who had rich knowledge about the area of plane figure was able to encourage students to understand the concept of area and to or explore the principles behind formula calculating various areas of plane geometry. The results demonstrated the importance of individual components of PCK as well as that of overall level of PCK. Different aspects of teaching practices were observed as to how the teachers had internalized PCK. On the basis of a close relationship between teachers' PCK and their teaching practice, this paper finally raised several implications for teachers' professional development for effective mathematics instruction.
The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' pedagogical content knowledge on probability. Teachers' pedagogical content knowledge on probability was analyzed in detail into 2 categories: (a) subject matter knowledge, (b) knowledge of students' understanding and misunderstanding. The results showed, in terms of the subject matter knowledge, that the teachers have some probability misconception. And, it showed, in the point of the knowledge of students' understanding, they could not explain why students have difficulties to solve some tasks with regard to probability. This study raised several implications for teachers' professional development for effective mathematics instruction.
The aim of this study was to analyze characteristics of teachers' knowledge about reductio ad absurdum. In order to achieve the aim, this study conducted didactical analysis about reductio ad absurdum through examining previous researches and developed a questionnaire with reference to the results of the analysis. The questionnaire was given to 34 high school teachers and qualitative methods were used to analyze the data obtained from the written responses by the participants. This study also elaborated the framework descriptors for interpreting the teachers' responses in the light of the didactical analysis and the data was elucidated in terms of this framework. The specific features of teachers' knowledge about reductio ad absurdum were categorized into five types as a result. This study raised several implications for teachers' professional development for effective mathematics instruction related to reductio ad absurdum.
The purpose of this study is to develop the assessment rubric of mathematical communication ability by each type: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and graphic. This rubric is qualified in the content-validity and reliability by professional educators' evaluation and correlation coefficient. 16 math educators judged that this involves the results of learning mathematical communication, the results of possible instruction, and the content of scoring mathematical communication by teachers. 170 middle school students were tested by the assessment task according to the types of mathematical communication. After two researchers and two teachers scored the tasks, correlation coefficient was calculated between evaluators. The coefficient is evaluated high in that it is more than 0.70.
