Road traffic noise causes considerable disturbance and annoyance in exposed inhabitants. Particularly, arterial road noise is a significant environmental problem in many urban areas in which higher traffic volume and higher car speed occur. Arterial road noise became the target of this investigation in Seoul, South Korea. Noise levels were measured at four points that were based on distance from roadside at the same measurement site and under the conditions as reported by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in 1999. The average noise levels ($L_{eq,1h}$) of the arterial road was 80.3 dBA at 5 m, 77.4 dBA at 10 m, 73.7 dBA at 20 m, 70.9 dBA at 30 m. A comparison between 1999 and 2008's measurement values has shown that in 2008 noise level is up by about 1.5 dBA, traffic volume has increased by about 15.7%, while car speed has decrease by about 8%. The relationship between 2008' measured values and predicted values using the NIER Equation is low under 10 m from the roadside. The influence range of arterial noise is calculated at 26 m for road noise limits in daytime. In relation to the comparison between traffic volume and noise level, the equivalence in traffic volume (Light car+10xHeavy car) is higher than other variables.

Shell vibrations of the rotary compressor, which account for considerable portion of the noise from compressor, are caused by various sources. Among them is the vibration of the in nor part or cylinder assembly, which undergoes severe compression process and rotational motion. But little researches have been carried out about the behavior and effect of the inner part because of its structural complexity. Furthermore, the shell of the rotary compressor is hermetic type that experimental approach is very difficult. This research studied the structure-born noise of the Rotary compressor using FE an analysis. The comparison between sound pressure spectrum and natural frequencies of the shell vibration implies that shell vibrations contribute significantly to the noise. It is found that inner part vibrations are responsible for those through the FE analysis. Design modification of the inner part, which shifts the target frequencies, reduced overall noise level of the compressor.

This paper describes a procedure to improve road noise using DPDS estimation. We can estimate a body local stiffness at chassis mounting point where the path of road input vibration by DPDS with experiment and FE simulation. DPDS result from FE model has a good correlation with experiment data. FE model DPDS shows weak points among chassis mounting points. Body panel thickness and shape were changed to meet DPDS target. Improved DPDS of critical points makes a road noise level lower.

Among the target identification algorithms presented up to now, the NNR algorithm utilize multifrequency and single observation method. But it is generally known that its implementation is extremely difficult. In this paper a new identification algorithm using the single frequency and cumulative observation method was proposed. The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm with 31 observation and accumulation is more effective and realizable than the NNR with 3 freqnencies when the noise level n is below 0.3.

The purpose of vehicle horn sound is for warning to pedestrians. In the past, the main development factor is to match the regulation level. But nowadays perceived quality is more important than level itself. In this study, we measure variety horn sound and evaluate its signals through the jury evaluation aimed at making horn sound quality index. Each contribution of the noise path for sound quality is identified and the target values and methods for implementing the luxurious horn sound are suggested. Finally, we developed, horn component and improve horn mounting condition for luxurious horn sound.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to validate the performance and diagnostic efficacy of the Korean digits-in-noise (K-DIN) test in comparison to the Korean speech perception-in-noise (K-SPIN) test, which is the representative speech-in-noise test in clinical practice. Subjects and Methods: Twenty-seven subjects (15 normal-hearing and 12 hearing-impaired listeners) participated. The recorded Korean 0-9 digits were used to form quasirandom digit triplets; 50 target digit triplets were presented at the most comfortable level of each subject while presenting speech-shaped background noise at various levels of signal-to-noise ratios (-12.5, -10, -5, or +5 dB). Subjects were then instructed to listen to both target and noise masker unilaterally and bilaterally through a headphone. K-SPIN test was also conducted using the same procedure as the K-DIN. After calculating their percent correct responses, K-DIN and K-SPIN results were compared using a Pearson-correlation test. Results: Results showed a statistically significant correlation between K-DIN and K-SPIN in all hearing conditions (left: r=0.814, p<0.001; right: r=0.788, p<0.001; bilateral: r=0.727, p<0.001). Moreover, the K-DIN test achieved better testing efficacy, shorter average listening time (5 min vs. 30 min), and easier performance of task according to participants' qualitative reports than the K-SPIN test. Conclusions: In this study, the Korean version of digit triplet test was validated in both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners. The findings suggest that the K-DIN test can be used as a simple and time-efficient hearing-in-noise test in audiology clinics in Korea.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is an effective tool for detecting shallow subsurface targets. In many GPR applications, these targets are veiled by the strong waves reflected from the ground surface, so that we need to apply a signal processing technique to separate the target signal from such strong signals. A pulse-compression technique is used in this research to compress the signal width so that it can be separated out from the strong contaminated clutter signals. This work introduces a filter algorithm to carry out pulse compression for GPR data, using a Wiener filtering technique. The filter is applied to synthetic and field GPR data acquired over a buried pipe. The discrimination method uses both the reflected signal from the target and the strong ground surface reflection as a reference signal for pulse compression. For a pulse-compression filter, reference signal selection is an important issue, because as the signal width is compressed the noise level will blow up, especially if the signal-to-noise ratio of the reference signal is low. Analysis of the results obtained from simulated and field GPR data indicates a significant improvement in the GPR image, good discrimination between the target reflection and the ground surface reflection, and better performance with reliable separation between them. However, at the same time the noise level slightly increases in field data, due to the wide bandwidth of the reference signal, which includes the higher-frequency components of noise. Using the ground-surface reflection as a reference signal we found that the pulse width could be compressed and the subsurface target reflection could be enhanced.
In this paper, we present an architecture of the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector called the generalized order statistics (GOS) CFAR detector, which covers various order statistics (OS) and cell-averaging (CA) CFAR detectors as special cases. For the proposed GOS CFAR detector, we obtain unified formulas for the false alarm and detection probabilities. By properly choosing coefficients of the GOS CFAR detector, one can utilize any combination of ordered samples to estimate the background noise level. Thus, if we use a reference window of size N, we can realize $(2^N-1)$ kinds of CFAR processors and obtain their performances from the unified formulas. Some examples are the CA, the OS, the censored mean level, and the trimmed mean CFAR detectors. As an application of the GOS CFAR detector to multiple target detection, we propose an algorithm called the adaptive mean level detector, which censors adaptively the interfering target returns in a reference window.

As semiconductor devices become highly integrated and process difficulty increases, the need for highly sensitive sensors that can detect micro leaks is increasing. However, the noise contained in the CCD sensor itself acts as an obstacle to detecting fine leaks. In this study, integration time was changed for each condition, the sensor was cooled to 0℃, and the dark voltage level was measured to confirm through experiment the characteristics of the temporal noise included in the CCD sensor, a component of OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy). When integration time was reduced from 30msec to 10msec, the dark voltage level decreased by about 20.5 % from an average of 151.5mV to 120.5mV. In the case of cooling device, Peltier elements were selected because of their simple structure and small size. During temperature cooling, the target temperature was controlled to within ±0.5℃ through PID control. When cooled from 20℃ to 0℃ using this cooling device, it was confirmed that the dark voltage level decreased by about 7% from an average of 147.0mV to 137.0mV.
