  • In this paper, design measure were proposed for the construction of terminal systems for airborne platforms, which are key element in the Joint Tactical Data Link System (JTDLS) complete system. The Korean perfect tactical data link (JTDLS) is a communication system to establish an independent tactical data link network and needs to develop a MIDS-LVT (Link-16) communication terminal for datalink. Once a Ground/Navy JTDLS terminal system is established around airborne platform, it will be possible to break away from reliance on NATO-based tactical data link joint operations and establish independent Korean surveillance reconnaissance real-time data sharing and tactical data link operations concepts. in this paper, the essential development elements of airborne platform mounting and operable JTDLS terminals are presented, and the concept of system design is proposed to embody them. Further, improved system performance was analyzed by applying the concepts of complex relative navigation system and Advanced TDMA protocol for the deployment of airborne tactical datalink networks.

  • The tactical datalink system has been recognized as the key element in Network Centric Warfaret(NCW). The military has been putting great efforts into establishing datalink system using existing tactical radio and UMPC. but the aircraft operational environment and the requirement specification for equipments mounted in the avionics are differentiated with those in other platforms, so special efforts are needed to select suitable UMPC. In this paper, we consider the requirement analysis for UMPC in respect of processor performance, operation system (OS) and NVG compatibility. Additionally we have to make a effort to understand the operational environment of aircraft and examine th standard to select the appropriate UMPC, and then we expect to establish the tactical datalink system successfully.

  • The wireless link of tactical datalink system provides a communication network to share digitalized tactical data in real-time. Also MAC(Multiple Access Control) of this system is subject to TDMA or CSMA according to a operated circumstance of target nodes to exchange the data reliably. In this paper, we verify the operability when we use CSMA scheme based on MIL-STD-188-220 in tactical datalink system which is basically designed with TDMA, and provide a mathematical analysis scheme to verify the operability and performance. Finally, by implementing CSMA scheme to a tactical datalink equipment we obtain practical results which can be compared with theoretical results.

  • In this paper, we propose how to efficiently apply IP and TDL(Tactical Datalink) protocol to the Link-K network for using their applications on the host system. We classify 3 kinds of communication method between IP network and TDL network. We explain the concepts of Like-to-Like communication (Link-K over IP, IP over Link-K) and Any-to-Any communication. We describe the characteristics and the implementation range of tactical datalink processor for each communication method.

  • Korea Department of Defense has been developing Link-K, Korean Joint Tactical Datalink, to support their independent joint operations and trying to enlarge the scope of Link-K tactical message delivery to nodes in IP based tactical networks for sharing situation awareness more broadly. A Link-K tactical message size is too small to fit into an IP packet, inefficiently wasting most of the IP packet space of the low bandwidth IP-based tactical networks. This paper proposes a new Link-K tactical message aggregation and delivery method when tactical messages need to be sent to some nodes located at IP-based tactical networks. With numerical analysis and OPNET simulation studies, we prove the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a method which can prevent data looping in multi tactical data-link operating situation. Because the situation of multi tactical data-link in Korea would be more complex than ever before, data looping is more likely to be happened. To prevent data looping, forwarder has to manage TQ(Track Quality) in forwarded track message by degrading it to enlarge correlation gate. Forwarder also has to discard useless track message which can be determined by minimum TQ value. To decide optimal formula for forwarder to degrade TQ and to determine minimum TQ, a research about track motion, correlation, TQ managing, etc in real system is necessary.

  • LYNX ESM has not only ESM function but Datalink function. The LYNX boarded equipment Interface and Channel coding is needed for LYNX Datalink to support the mother ship with tactical data included threat radar analysis data of LYNX ESM, navigation data, Radar and Sonar of LYNX. The interface of loaded equipments are various protocol like as ARINC419/429, RS232, Synchro, Sync Serial. The Channel coding of Convolution-Scrambler-Interleaver-Bit Stuffing is applied for recovering the transmission data mixed with propagation errors in sea environment.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) operating in the military for various purposes are designed to transmit information collected according to the purpose to GCS(Ground Control System), and to transmit/receive the vehicle's operational control and status information using wireless communication(or datalink). Currently, the military UAV systems in operation in Korea use unique communication methods, protocols, and message structures for each system. In this paper, we analyze the TM/TC data protocol of two types of military UAV systems currently under development and propose a more efficient TM/TC message design scheme in wireless communication(or datalink) environment. And we will discuss issues to be considered for standardization of technology for ensuring interoperability with many UAVs or newly introduced UAV systems.

Currently, the military UAV systems in operation in Korea use unique communication methods, protocols, and message structures for each system. Among these, the Division UAV is designed to transmit fixed size TM/TC data repeatedly and the Corps UAV is designed to transmit aperiodic TM/TC data to the variable length of the message-based. In this paper, we analyze the TM/TC data protocol of existing military UAV systems and present data protocol design method which is considered to be more efficient in wireless communication environment applied to equipment under development. And we will discuss issues to be considered for standardization of technology for ensuring interoperability with many UAVs or newly introduced UAV systems.

  • In modern warfare, the main factor of triumph is superior situation awareness which leads rapid command decision and precisely guided munition, and TDL(Tactical Data Link) is the main communicational enabler. ROK forces currently operate Link-16 with allied forces and are also developing Korean national data link, Link-K which is also planned to be cooperated with Link-16. Assigning participant and track numbers needs agreement between ROK and allied forces, but ROK forces have exclusive authority in assigning numbers in Link-K. This paper proposes the effective method of exchange participant and track numbers between Link-16 and Link-K, and applicability verification in operational test and evaluation will be also presented.
